Firefighter Joe Echema, a star running back at Cal who played briefly for the Raiders, is suing the Redwood City Fire Department, alleging racial discrimination. Echema, who is of Nigerian descent and played under the name of Adimchinobe Echemandu as senior in 2003 and for three NFL teams including the Raiders through 2007, said in a news release issued from his lawyer: "Redwood City has a responsibility to promote an equal and inclusive fire service. Bias is something we all have and all experience. However, Redwood City and Redwood City Fire Department cannot continue to ignore bias and discriminatory treatment of personnel or the community we serve." Specifically, Echema told KPIX (Channel 5) he has faced harassment, including being sent sexually explicit pictures. "I was harassed continuously because of ethnic background as an African American immigrant," Echema said. - Daily Californian

  04/28/20 - Brian HightowerrSr/2024, California, 6-2, 205 (DS#116 WR) + More +

Brian Hightower saw limited action in his first two football seasons at Miami. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver was behind the likes of K.J. Osborn and Jeff Thomas - among several others - on the Hurricanes' depth chart the past two seasons, creating few opportunities on the field. Hightower could see those opportunities blossom at Illinois. The Leimert Park, Calif., native committed to the Illini on Tuesday afternoon, announcing his decision via his Twitter account.

"I've been in the dark but I promise you'll see a brighter me," Hightower wrote above a photo of him in an Illinois uniform, along with the word committed in the background. After sitting out the 2020 season save for a possible change to NCAA transfer rules, Hightower will be in place for the 2021 season that will see Illinois lose Josh Imatorbhebhe, Ricky Smalling and Trevon Sidney from its wide receiver corps. Hightower is the third transfer to join the Illini this offseason after New Mexico State receiver Desmond "Drew" Dan Jr. announced he was transferring on April 9 and Wofford offensive lineman Blake Jerestay announced he was doing the same on April 11. - News Gazette Tribune

  04/25/20 - Ashtyn DavisrSr/2020, California, 6-1, 202 (DS#3 FS) + More +

The next chapter of Ashtyn Davis' comeback story is about to be written. The former Cal football safety became the first Cal football player to be selected in the 2020 NFL draft, as the New York Jets drafted the former walk-on with the No. 68 overall pick in the third round. "I was just excited, obviously," Davis said in a conference call. "I don't know how to describe it other than that - my hands were shaking. I didn't expect myself to really get too nervous, but I did, and it was awesome seeing my parents' reaction and everybody's reaction and how excited they got."

According to Davis, numerous teams, including the Jets, had contacted him throughout the predraft process. His selection near the beginning of the third round by New York, however, occurred with other teams showing more interest. "It was a little bit of a surprise," Davis said of the selection. "A lot of teams reached out to me, so the Jets had reached out to me before. There were a couple of teams that were showing particular interest, but the Jets weren't necessarily one of them." A former collegiate hurdler for the Cal track team, Davis walked onto the football team in 2015 and was a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the nation's best walk-on, in 2019. - Daily Californian

  04/22/20 - Traveon BeckSr/2020, California, 5-09, 163 (DS#149 CB) + More +

The top cornerback prospects in the NFL draft this season share a common trait - size. Big, quick and athletic defenders, professional defensive backs tend to have specific physical traits. Former Cal cornerback Traveon Beck does not share these traits. At 5'9" and 165 lbs., the Bears' standout is considered by many scouts to be undersized. But what Beck lacks in size is made up in his coverage and tackling ability, as well as his specialty covering the slot. Beck is a force to be reckoned with in open space. His ability to stay low and wide makes it difficult for receivers to get around him, as Beck has shown a knack for bringing down runners in one-on-one situations to force short gains or losses. Where most players would easily get beaten, Beck is able to use his low center of gravity and wrap up players regardless of the difference in size. Beck's coverage in the slot is also highly touted - he is considered one of the best nickelbacks in the country. While his small stature can make it difficult to get off blocks, his quickness can also allow him to get around them. Should he make an NFL roster, he'll likely have to gain muscle mass in order to compete with large, athletic professional receivers. - Daily Californian

  04/05/20 - Collin MoorerSr/2022, California, 6-4, 245 (DS#999 TE) + More +

The soon-to-be Cal graduate is departing after his most successful season to date. Moore started all 13 games in 2019, a marked increase in playing time after only making an appearance in one game of the Bears' 2018 campaign. The 6'4? tight end had just two receptions for 11 yards last season, but one of those receptions was for a touchdown in the Bears' 35-20 Redbox Bowl win over Illinois. Moore is the latest tight end to depart from Cal after McCallan Castles transferred during the 2019 regular season. New offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave will work with a position group led by redshirt juniors Jake Tonges, who recorded 13 receptions for 262 yards in 2019 and Gavin Reinwald, who finished last season with 14 receptions for 146 yards. Cal will also welcome a pair of four-star tight end recruits, with D.J. Rogers joining the team's 2020 class and Jermaine Terry coming to Berkeley in 2021.

  01/03/20 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Longtime NFL assistant Bill Musgrave was hired Friday to become the new offensive coordinator at California. Coach Justin Wilcox announced Musgrave will replace Beau Baldwin next season for the Golden Bears. Baldwin left to become head coach at Cal Poly. "Bill Musgrave has a brilliant offensive mind and is one of the top teachers of offensive football and quarterbacks," Wilcox said. “Bill has incredible football knowledge and has been extremely versatile in the offensive systems he has run throughout his career, which is important. He also has a strong desire to coach again at the collegiate level, where he can help develop young football players at a formative stage of their careers.”

Musgrave has more than two decades of coaching experience in college and the pros and has spent 13 seasons as an offensive coordinator. His only college coaching job came in 2001-02 when he was offensive coordinator at Virginia. He has ties to the Bay Area having played as a backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers from 1991-94 and serving as offensive coordinator for the Raiders in 2015-16 when he helped them earn their only playoff berth in the past 17 seasons. - AP College Football

  12/30/19 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Chase Garbers threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading California to a 35-20 win over Illinois on Monday in the Redbox Bowl. Christopher Brown Jr. ran for 120 yards on 20 carries, and Makai Polk caught five passes for a season-high 105 yards as Cal (8-5) won its first bowl game since 2015. Brandon Peters passed for 273 yards and one touchdown for Illinois (6-7) in his return after sitting out the regular-season finale with a concussion. Peters, who was shaken up again after diving out of bounds following a scramble late in the fourth quarter, completed 22 of 37 passes and added a team-high 68 rushing yards.

Garbers, who had been in and out of the lineup all season because of a shoulder injury, got going after being sacked on the first play from scrimmage and throwing an incomplete pass on the second. The offensive MVP of the game, Garbers completed 22 of 31 passes for 272 yards with TD passes of 4, 3, 2 and 6 yards. He also scored on quarterback sneak from the 1 early in the second quarter while helping the Bears set a season-high for scoring. The strong showing by Garbers offset an uneven day by California’s defense. - AP College Football
