  12/05/20 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Chase Garbers threw for a touchdown and ran for a short score, Muelu Iosefa had a late fumble recovery, and California earned its first victory of the season by beating No. 21 Oregon 21-17 on Saturday night. Oregon (3-2) got the ball back with 2:01 left and Tyler Shough marched the Ducks down the field, but his team gave the ball away once again in what has become a problematic pattern for the Ducks this season. Garbers outshined young Oregon star Shough, who threw for 231 yards in his fifth time with 200-plus yards passing in as many career starts.

Shough's 67-yard completion to Travis Dye in the final minute of the second quarter set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Cyrus Habibi-Likio that lifted the Ducks to a 17-14 halftime lead. They didn't score again. Garbers completed 10 of his first 13 passes and wound up 20 of 32 for 183 yards for the Golden Bears (1-3), who had an extra-point attempt blocked in the waning moments of a 24-23 loss to rival Stanford in the Big Game last Friday on their home field. - California/AP College Football

  11/27/20 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Stanford linebacker Gabe Reid said of Garbers: "He's a dangerous weapon. We saw that last year in the Big Game. He kind of gashed us, so we're definitely emphasizing doing your assignment. It's not about trying to do too much, but working together to try to bring him down. It's about getting everybody to the ball." Fans often define Cal quarterbacks by how they perform in games against Stanford. Just ask Kevin Brown, Steve Levy and Dave Penhall, who have all combined to pay for zero meals in Berkeley since improbable Big Game wins. But Garbers is different. He was good before his career-defining victory and has shown signs of being great since. Cal is 13-7 when Garbers starts and 13-4 when he plays more than a half. He's the Pac-12's active leader in wins (13) and has a Redbox Bow Offensive MVP on his mantel after a five-touchdown onslaught against Illinois last year.

After impossible circumstances in the season opener, which called for Cal to prep for UCLA without defensive linemen and travel to Pasadena - all in about a 40-hour timespan - Garbers went 18-of-33 for 122 yards and an interception. He bounced back last week at Oregon State with a 28-of-42, 315-yard, three-touchdown performance that graded out at 92% on offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave's scale. "Confidence comes from one source and one source only, and that's demonstrated performance," Musgrave said. "Chase played here as a young player and got some good experience and took some lumps, like we all do when we start out playing. I think he's learning as he goes along. "He's climbing, he's learning, and he's gaining from every single rep that he gets." - San Francisco Chronicle

  10/09/20 - Camryn BynumrSr/2021, California, 6-0, 196 (DS#27 CB) + More +

Cal football is back, and so is one of the Bears' defensive set pieces - after declaring for the NFL draft just shy of a month ago, star Bears cornerback Camryn Bynum announced his intent to participate in the shortened season with his team on Instagram on Monday afternoon. Bynum's initial decision to forgo his final season with Cal was a hand forced by the pandemic and the Pac-12's mid-August decision to cancel all sports until 2021. The accomplished defensive back elected to focus on training for the NFL draft once there was no longer any promise of fall football.

Just weeks ago, however, leaders in the Pac-12 organization unanimously decided to reverse their earlier settlement and proceed with a shortened seven-game season this fall rather than a potentially fuller season in the spring. Bynum's return to Cal football is one that few expected and one that few could be upset about. The team captain led the squad both in the locker room and on the gridiron, amassing a team high of nine pass breakups in the 2019 season and totaling 32 while lacing it up for the blue and gold. The 200-pound corner recorded a career-high 12 tackles to help Cal earn its phenomenal and historic win over Stanford last November. - Daily Californian

  09/16/20 - Luc BequetterSr/2022, California, 6-2, 281 (DS#66 DT) + More +

While college football toiled this summer over the question of whether the sport would be safe enough to play amid the COVID-19 pandemic, defensive lineman Luc Bequette found himself stuck in limbo. When rumblings started to surface that the Pac-12 might be among the conferences unwilling to play this fall, Bequette had to consider whether he wanted to stay at Cal and risk missing an entire season or if he wanted to explore other options. "You're hearing all these things that the Pac-12?s going to cancel the season, but then you're still kind of holding out hope and the coaches are also trying to hold out hope," Bequette said.

Bequette had started 38 straight games over the past three seasons. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility after losing all but four games of his redshirt freshman season because of an ACL injury. He never imagined the possibility of not being able to play it out. "For me, personally, I was going to play this season no matter what - if it was in the Pac-12 or any other conferences playing," he said. His father was the one who initially urged him to start considering options. "He was telling me I needed to start transferring immediately before I got all the information," he said. "I am a pretty loyal guy, so I was going to wait until I got the official notice that the season was canceled before I was going to look anywhere else." - Boston Globe

  09/09/20 - Luc BequetterSr/2022, California, 6-2, 281 (DS#66 DT) + More +

A double major at Cal (legal studies and American studies), he was granted a sixth year of eligibility after playing only four games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 because of a lower-body injury. Last fall, in recording a career-high 52 tackles, four tackles for loss, and three sacks, Bequette was the recipient of the Brick Muller Award as Cal's Most Valuable Lineman. Bequette has a strong family lineage to Arkansas football and athletics. His father (Chris), grandfather (George), uncle (Jay), and cousin (Jake) all suited up for the Razorbacks, with the latter carving out a four-year playing career (2012-15) on the defensive line for the Patriots. But arguably the best athlete in the family is Bequette's mother, Debi Thomas, a bronze medalist in figure skating for the United States at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and the 1986 world champion. Another fun fact: As a 12-year-old, Bequette won the C-U Little League Home Run Derby in Champaign, Ill., before the family moved to Arkansas. He is one of five transfers to join BC since coach Jeff Hafley was hired in December. - Boston Globe

  09/08/20 - Luc BequetterSr/2022, California, 6-2, 281 (DS#66 DT) + More +

Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley announced the addition of former Cal defensive lineman Luc Bequette (pronounced luke beck-IT) to the 2020 roster. Bequette, a graduate transfer, will be eligible to play for the Eagles in 2020. Bequette is one of five transfers to join BC since Hafley was hired in December. The Arkansas native was granted a sixth-year of eligibility for the 2020 campaign following the 2019 season, getting a year of eligibility back for a 2016 redshirt freshman season in which he played in only four games before being injured.

Bequette played in 42 games over the last four campaigns after redshirting as a true freshman in 2015 and started all 38 contests over the past three seasons. His Cal totals included 130 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss (-57 yards), 10.0 sacks (-53 yards), three pass breakups, three passes defended, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, four quarterback hurries and one blocked kick. - Boston College Football

  09/07/20 - Camryn BynumrSr/2021, California, 6-0, 196 (DS#27 CB) + More +

Cornerback Camryn Bynum announced Sunday that he intends to forego his fifth-year redshirt senior season at Cal and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. The 22-year-old is on track to graduate from Cal in December of 2020 with a bachelor's degree in American studies. He is the first Cal player to declare for the NFL Draft with collegiate eligibility remaining since Chad Hansen in 2017.
