  04/15/21 - Brett JohnsonrSr/2024, California, 6-4, 295 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Brett Johnson, who started all four games on the defensive line for Cal in 2020, was ruled out for next season by head coach Justin Wilcox on Wednesday. Johnson underwent a successful surgery to repair a broken hip suffered in an automobile accident this spring. "The most important thing right now is that he focus on his overall health and well-being," Wilcox said. Since arriving at Cal as a true freshman in 2019, Johnson has racked up 46 tackles and three sacks over 13 starts. Last season, Johnson embraced his role as a veteran presence on the defensive line and enjoyed arguably his best year at the collegiate level, tying for third place on the team in total tackles. Against Stanford in the 2020 Big Game, the junior recorded a career-high 10 tackles. Johnson is expected to make a full recovery for the 2022 season and will retain three years of collegiate eligibility from 2022 onward. - Daily Californian

  03/06/21 - Marqez BimagerSr/2022, California, 6-1, 249 (DS#54 OLB) + More +

Texas Longhorns defensive end Marqez Bimage entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, according to reports. With the loss of Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai to the 2021 NFL Draft as an early entrant and Bimage's entrance into the transfer portal, Texas is thin at the pass-rusher position, although new head coach Steve Sarkisian has officially added LSU graduate transfer Ray Thornton there and holds a commitment from Notre Dame grad transfer Ovie Oghoufo. Bimage opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and was initially expected to return to the team. - Burnt Orange Nation

  02/03/21 - Michael SaffellrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 290 (DS#999 C) + More +

Cal senior center Michael Saffell was named the 2020 Pac-12 Football Scholar Athlete of the Year the conference announced Tuesday. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their respective sports disciplines. Saffell becomes the fourth Cal player to win the award since its inception in 2007 and the second in the last four seasons following placekicker Matt Anderson in 2017. Cal's other winners were Alex Mack (2008) and Mike Mohamed (2010). Saffell earned his bachelor's degree from the Cal's Haas School of Business in three-and-a-half years in December of 2020 and had a 3.62 undergraduate grade point average. He was accepted into the university's Master of Information and Data Science program, which he began in January of 2021. - Bear Insider

  01/15/21 - Cameron GooderSr/2022, California, 6-3, 232 (DS#29 OLB) + More +

Inside linebacker Kuony Deng, safety Elijah Hicks, outside linebacker Cameron Goode and cornerback Josh Drayden will all stay in the blue and gold. The group accounted for 92 tackles and directly contributed to four of Cal's five turnovers in 2020. Their announcement came with a claim: They have yet to finish their business. This sentiment is likely shared by running back Marcel Dancy and center Michael Saffell, two key seniors for the Cal offense who will also return in 2021. - Daily Californian

  01/06/21 - Zeandae JohnsonrSr/2021, California, 6-3, 270 (DS#41 DE) + More +

It turns out that a seventh year in college is not the charm - at least not for defensive lineman Zeandae Johnson. Johnson, despite having eligibility for a mind-boggling seventh year with the Bears, will forego that opportunity in favor of the 2021 NFL draft after doing plenty in Berkeley. The redshirt senior played in 41 games for the Bears and was granted a rare sixth year of eligibility this season due to past injuries. It is eligibility that Johnson could have used next season, but after registering 59 tackles and 5.5 sacks over his career in blue and gold, the 6'4", 290-pound defensive end will try his trade in the NFL. - Daily Californian
