2022 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: DB - Patrick McMorris, Sr., San Diego State,...McMorris landed on his second straight all-conference team, becoming just the second SDSU safety to make two all-MW first teams, joining Will Demps from 2000-01. The preseason MW Co-Defensive Player of the Year and member of both the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists, McMorris has 59 tackles (28 solo) in 11 starts on the season (missed Toledo game), including 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, five pass breakups, a 30-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown and a quarterback hurry. According to Pro Football Focus, when targeted this season, quarterbacks are 9-for-15 for 72 yards and one interception vs. McMorris, posting an 87.0 defensive pass efficiency rating, which ranks fourth in the league (min. 300 pass opportunities).   Patrick McMorris returned a fumble for a touchdown in the game's opening minute, Jalen Mayden passed for 156 yards and added a 32-yard rushing touchdown and San Diego State beat Nevada 23-7 Saturday night. On the second play from scrimmage, Nevada's Cross Patton fumbled and McMorris scooped and scored to give the Aztecs the lead for good at 7-0 with 14:16 left in the first quarter. Jack Browning kicked a 30-yard field goal about 5 minutes later and made a 27-yarder midway through the second quarter that gave San Diego State (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West) a 13-0 lead. Shane Illingsworth threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Curtis to get Nevada (2-5, 0-3) on the board with 48 seconds left in the first half. Browning added a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and Mayden's TD scramble capped the scoring with 5:29 to play.   Apparently, those who follow Mountain West football are not expecting San Diego State's sum to equal its parts. How else to explain the Aztecs with a conference-high eight selections on the preseason all-Mountain West team a day after SDSU was picked to finish second in the conference's West Division? In a vote of Mountain West media members, the 27-man team included SDSU wide receiver Jesse Matthews and center Alama Uluave were named on the offense. Linemen Keshawn Banks and Jonah Tavai, linebacker Caden McDonald and safety Patrick McMorris were picked on the defense. Jordan Byrd was named among the specialists as both a punt and kick returner. All seven players are seniors.

McMorris shared preseason Defensive Player of the Year with San Jose State defensive lineman Cade Hall. Byrd was picked as preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. McMorris, a first-team all-MW selection last season after leading the Aztecs with 90 tackles and four interceptions, is the first SDSU player so distinguished in the preseason since cornerback Damontae Kazee in 2016. - San Diego Union Tribune

2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB - Patrick McMorris, Jr., San Diego State,...McMorris is also on the MW first team in his first year as the starting 'Aztec' in SDSU's vaunted 3-3-5 defense. McMorris has a team-high 79 tackles (48 solo), including 2.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions for 36 yards, eight pass breakups and a 15-yard fumble recovery. Since the start of the 3-3-5 defense at San Diego State in 2009, only Nat Berhe (2013) and McMorris (2021) have earned first-team all-MW accolades as an 'Aztec', while Berhe (2012) is the only other 'Aztec' to even make a second team over that span. - San Diego State Football

San Diego State was so deep and experienced in the secondary last season that younger players like safety Patrick McMorris didn't get many chances to show what they could do in a game. When a midseason opportunity presented itself, however, McMorris made the most of it. When senior Dwayne Johnson Jr. missed the team's game at Nevada because of a death in the family, McMorris stepped in at the important Aztec position. That's the 3-3-5 defense's center fielder, who could act as a safety, cornerback or linebacker on a given play.

McMorris was among SDSU's leaders against Nevada, getting seven of the 10 total tackles that he had on the season. SDSU head coach Brady Hoke said, "Pat really did some good things in that football game where, as a coach, you're looking and going, 'This guy is going to be pretty good for us.' "He's continued to do that...Within the defense itself he has some big shoes to fill. But he has really done a nice job." McMorris' name has popped up throughout the spring, and he kept popping up all over the field during Friday's scrimmage. - San Diego Union Tribune
