  10/31/21 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

After three straight Pac-12 losses to open the season, California is starting to find its stride. Chase Garbers threw one of his three TD passes one play after a partially blocked punt and the Golden Bears beat Oregon State 39-25 Saturday. "We're certainly improving," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said. "There are guys who are developing and making some big plays in the game who are coming into their own a little bit. We are improving but the margins are so thin at this level of football and in our conference that there are going to be a handful of critical plays in the game that you have to find a way to make and I thought there were some big ones today." The biggest plays came in the closing seconds of the third quarter with Cal (3-5, 2-3 Pac-12) leading by seven points.

Chance Nolan couldn't connect with Trevon Bradford on a third-down pass and sent out Luke Loecher to punt. Nick Alftin got a piece of the kick and it went out of bounds 1 yard past the line of scrimmage. Garbers then went deep and connected on a 38-yard TD pass to Trevon Clark to make it 31-17 on the final play of the third quarter. The Beavers (5-3, 3-2) lost for the second time in three games and fell a game behind rival Oregon in the Pac-12 North. "There's nobody feeling sorry for themselves, because we put ourselves in this position," defensive back Jaydon Grant said. "We're the ones who came out and didn't execute. We're the ones who came out and got out-physicaled from top to bottom. We're the ones who are accountable for losing this game - not the coaches, not the game plan. It's us. It's not being able to execute for four quarters throughout the duration of the game. It's don't feel sorry for yourself and back to work tomorrow." Oregon State tried to mount a comeback, cutting it to 31-25 on a 46-yard TD pass from Chance Nolan to Trevon Bradford followed by a 2-point conversion. - California/AP College Football

  10/24/21 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Chase Garbers passed for two touchdowns and broke the school record for career rushing yards by a quarterback, leading California past Colorado, 26-3, on Saturday. The Golden Bears (2-5, 1-3 Pac-12) made several big plays offensively to go with a solid afternoon from their defense and special teams while snapping a three-game losing streak. Garbers completed 22 of 29 passes for 225 yards but did his most damage on the ground, rushing for 96 yards on 10 carries. That also moved Garbers past Joe Kapp as Cal's all-time leader for quarterbacks with 1,025 yards. Kapp ran for 931 from 1956-58. Dario Longhetto made a career-best four field goals, including a 50-yarder as time expired in the first half. The Bears defense added six sacks and held the Buffaloes to 104 yards of offense.

Colorado (2-5, 1-3) failed to get into the end zone and was limited to a 33-yard field goal by Cole Becker. The Bears, off to their worst start since coach Justin Wilcox took over in 2017, scored on their first five possessions and led 23-3 at halftime. Garbers had a pair of touchdown throws in the first half, including a perfectly thrown 24-yard lob to freshman tight end Keleki Latu over tight coverage by Colorado linebacker Quinn Perry. Cal pushed its lead to 17 when Garbers ran a play-fake and connected with wide open Gavin Reinwald for a 31-yard score. Colorado never got anything going. Buffaloes quarterback Brendon Lewis was held to 69 yards passing while the running game managed only 35 yards. - California/AP College Football

  10/23/21 - Isaiah IfanserSr/2024, California, 5-08, 205 (DS#47 RB) + More +

Isaiah Ifanse scored the go-ahead touchdown, Matthew McKay threw a pair of fourth-quarter TD passes and Montana State allowed just three field goals, defeating Idaho State 27-9 on Saturday. The win pushes Montana State, ranked eighth in the FCS coaches poll, to 7-1 and 5-0 in the Big Sky Conference with a bye week coming up before traveling to face No. 2-ranked Eastern Washington on Nov. 6. Ifanse broke a 3-3 tie with a 10-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. McKay broke the game open with two big touchdown plays in the fourth quarter - a 27-yard TD pass to Lance McCutcheon and a 65-yarder to Willie Patterson, who caught it in stride for the score. McKay was 10-of-21 passing for 136 yards. Ifanse gained 165 yards on 17 carries. Tyevin Ford rushed 26 times for 115 yards for Idaho State (1-6, 1-4), Hunter Hayes threw for 111 yards and David Allish scored all the Bengals points with field goals of 47, 24 and 39 yards. - AP College Football

  09/19/21 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

After opening the season with a couple of tight losses, California coach Justin Wilcox will take any sort of win - even if it was closer than he wanted against a lower-level team. Chase Garbers threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns, Nikko Remigio returned the second-half kickoff for a score and Cal beat Sacramento State 42-30 Saturday for its first win of the season. "You never minimize a win," Wilcox said. "It's hard winning in college football, regardless of who you're playing...It's good to get a win. But we all know that we need to be much, much better." The Golden Bears (1-2) had lost their first two games of the season to Nevada and TCU in tight contests but handled the FCS-level Hornets (1-2) to avoid their first 0-3 start in a full season since 2001. Cal also lost its first three games in last year's pandemic-abbreviated four-game slate.

Garbers led the Bears to TD drives on their first two possessions of the game on drives capped by 4-yard TD runs from Damien Moore. Garbers got into the act himself when he connected on a 45-yard TD pass to Jeremiah Hunter late in the first half and a 12-yard touchdown to Trevon Clark in the third. He also ran for a 16-yard score in the fourth. "Each and every week we have gotten better," Garbers said about Cal's offense. "We have taken steps forward. As the season goes on and weeks go on, we'll keep taking that next step." - California/AP College Football

  08/26/21 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

After a pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the California Golden Bears are excited to show off what they hope will be a much more dynamic offense with respected longtime NFL coordinator Bill Musgrave and veteran quarterback Chase Garbers. Coach Justin Wilcox brought on Musgrave last season to build on a strong finish to 2019 only to have spring practice cut short after only a few sessions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then after an abbreviated offseason, the Bears managed to play only four games last season, with one canceled as they arrived at the stadium and another scheduled on short notice.

The results predictably weren't very good as Cal won just one game and scored 20.3 points per game. That should change this season after a full spring practice and offseason. "We've had a lot more time to communicate, meet, spend on football," Wilcox said. "Any time you get that, you're getting better and better every day. If you talk to Chase, he'd tell you the same thing. The comfort level has significantly improved." Garbers has fared well in his career when healthy. He has thrown for 4,049 yards in 24 career games with 34 TDs and 16 interceptions. Cal won all seven games in 2019 when Garbers was healthy but lost twice when he left early with injuries and went 1-3 when he didn't play. "I think Chase is primed for a great season. I really do," Wilcox said. "He's played a ton of football. Got a lot of different experiences. His comfort level in practice, his comfort level within the schemes, just operating. He's confident. I think that just comes with age and time. Doesn't always happen overnight. He's had some really good moments. He's learned a lot along the way." - Oakland Tribune

  08/24/21 - Luc BequetterSr/2022, California, 6-2, 281 (DS#66 DT) + More +

The Bears' preseason has been graced with some good news: The NCAA granted defensive lineman Luc Bequette the ability to play a seventh year. Bequette will return from a brief stint at Boston College to the place where he started his college career - Berkeley, California. Bequette played in 11 total games for the Eagles last season but got his start at Cal in 2015 before transferring in fall 2020. During Bequette's most recent season with the blue and gold, he was part of a defense that was ranked fifth in the nation by Bleacher Report, and he earned 52 tackles. The skilled lineman will return to Cal at the age of 24. With his age comes experience, and it's expected that he'll bring this and more to the Bears' defensive line. - Daily Californian

  08/23/21 - Landon MorrisrSr/2026, California, 6-5, 230 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Syracuse freshman Landon Morris has entered the NCAA's transfer portal, he announced Monday morning on Twitter. Morris, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound tight end, didn't specify why he opted to seek a transfer from Syracuse, but he thanked the university, his coaches and teammates for supporting him. "It was an honor spending everyday here in 'Cuse with y'all, thank you for showing love and bringing me in as family from day one," Morris wrote. "I couldn't thank Syracuse University enough for helping me on the road to becoming the best version of myself everyday!" Morris' decision comes two weeks into the Orange's preseason training camp. Just a few minutes after his announcement, Morris posted a highlight video of himself performing one-on-one drills against Syracuse defensive backs. - The Post-Standard

  07/30/21 - Luc BequetterSr/2022, California, 6-2, 281 (DS#66 DT) + More +

The Cal defensive line could get a boost with the return of Luc Bequette who played at Boston College last season after five years at Cal. Bequette, now 24, saw action in 42 games at Cal, starting 38 of those from 2016 through 2019 after redshirting as a freshman in 2015. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility for the 2020 season after playing just four games in 2016 before being injured. When the conference suspended the season in August, Bequette opted to go to Boston College so he could get in a full 11-game season. Bequette started all 11 games at defensive tackle for the Eagles, totaling 18 tackles, with three tackles for loss, two forced and one recovery. He decided to take advantage of the NCAA allotting players and extra year so he'll be a seventh year college football player being showcased on a team known for its defense. - Arizona Republic

  07/26/21 - Michael SaffellrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 290 (DS#999 C) + More +

Michael Saffell announced Friday that he has medically retired from football due to injury via a letter and video addressed to the Cal football family. "Being a football student-athlete at Cal has been more than I could have dreamed of," Saffell said. "I've had so many opportunities to excel on the field, as well as in the classroom and the community. There are many people to thank including my Cal football teammates, coaches and staff, as well as the University's professors, our fans and so many more. This was a difficult decision but the right one for me. Although I will miss competing and the camaraderie with my teammates, I will always be a part of the Cal family and knowing that helps ease the disappointment that my football playing career has come to an end. I'm excited for my next challenge." - Cal Football

  04/28/21 - Patrick McMorrisrSr/2024, California, 6-0, 207 (DS#14 SS) + More +

San Diego State was so deep and experienced in the secondary last season that younger players like safety Patrick McMorris didn't get many chances to show what they could do in a game. When a midseason opportunity presented itself, however, McMorris made the most of it. When senior Dwayne Johnson Jr. missed the team's game at Nevada because of a death in the family, McMorris stepped in at the important Aztec position. That's the 3-3-5 defense's center fielder, who could act as a safety, cornerback or linebacker on a given play.

McMorris was among SDSU's leaders against Nevada, getting seven of the 10 total tackles that he had on the season. SDSU head coach Brady Hoke said, "Pat really did some good things in that football game where, as a coach, you're looking and going, 'This guy is going to be pretty good for us.' "He's continued to do that...Within the defense itself he has some big shoes to fill. But he has really done a nice job." McMorris' name has popped up throughout the spring, and he kept popping up all over the field during Friday's scrimmage. - San Diego Union Tribune

  04/15/21 - Brett JohnsonrSr/2024, California, 6-4, 295 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Brett Johnson, who started all four games on the defensive line for Cal in 2020, was ruled out for next season by head coach Justin Wilcox on Wednesday. Johnson underwent a successful surgery to repair a broken hip suffered in an automobile accident this spring. "The most important thing right now is that he focus on his overall health and well-being," Wilcox said. Since arriving at Cal as a true freshman in 2019, Johnson has racked up 46 tackles and three sacks over 13 starts. Last season, Johnson embraced his role as a veteran presence on the defensive line and enjoyed arguably his best year at the collegiate level, tying for third place on the team in total tackles. Against Stanford in the 2020 Big Game, the junior recorded a career-high 10 tackles. Johnson is expected to make a full recovery for the 2022 season and will retain three years of collegiate eligibility from 2022 onward. - Daily Californian

  03/06/21 - Marqez BimagerSr/2022, California, 6-1, 249 (DS#54 OLB) + More +

Texas Longhorns defensive end Marqez Bimage entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, according to reports. With the loss of Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai to the 2021 NFL Draft as an early entrant and Bimage's entrance into the transfer portal, Texas is thin at the pass-rusher position, although new head coach Steve Sarkisian has officially added LSU graduate transfer Ray Thornton there and holds a commitment from Notre Dame grad transfer Ovie Oghoufo. Bimage opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and was initially expected to return to the team. - Burnt Orange Nation

  02/03/21 - Michael SaffellrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 290 (DS#999 C) + More +

Cal senior center Michael Saffell was named the 2020 Pac-12 Football Scholar Athlete of the Year the conference announced Tuesday. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their respective sports disciplines. Saffell becomes the fourth Cal player to win the award since its inception in 2007 and the second in the last four seasons following placekicker Matt Anderson in 2017. Cal's other winners were Alex Mack (2008) and Mike Mohamed (2010). Saffell earned his bachelor's degree from the Cal's Haas School of Business in three-and-a-half years in December of 2020 and had a 3.62 undergraduate grade point average. He was accepted into the university's Master of Information and Data Science program, which he began in January of 2021. - Bear Insider

Inside linebacker Kuony Deng, safety Elijah Hicks, outside linebacker Cameron Goode and cornerback Josh Drayden will all stay in the blue and gold. The group accounted for 92 tackles and directly contributed to four of Cal's five turnovers in 2020. Their announcement came with a claim: They have yet to finish their business. This sentiment is likely shared by running back Marcel Dancy and center Michael Saffell, two key seniors for the Cal offense who will also return in 2021. - Daily Californian

  01/06/21 - Zeandae JohnsonrSr/2021, California, 6-3, 270 (DS#41 DE) + More +

It turns out that a seventh year in college is not the charm - at least not for defensive lineman Zeandae Johnson. Johnson, despite having eligibility for a mind-boggling seventh year with the Bears, will forego that opportunity in favor of the 2021 NFL draft after doing plenty in Berkeley. The redshirt senior played in 41 games for the Bears and was granted a rare sixth year of eligibility this season due to past injuries. It is eligibility that Johnson could have used next season, but after registering 59 tackles and 5.5 sacks over his career in blue and gold, the 6'4", 290-pound defensive end will try his trade in the NFL. - Daily Californian
