  08/19/22 - Tate JohnsonrSr/2026, Auburn, 6-3, 271 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Auburn's offensive line got a boost of stability in the offseason with the return of center Nick Brahms for a sixth season, but with the fifth-year starter coming off an offseason knee procedure, the Tigers have had two additional players receive first-team reps at center this preseason. Brandon Council - a seventh-year player - and junior Tate Johnson have rotated in at center along with Brahms during the first week-plus of practices, providing Auburn with additional depth at center should Brahms be slowed by his surgically repaired knee. Johnson received some first-team work at center during Saturday's scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with head coach Bryan Harsin noting Johnson's improved understanding of Auburn's offensive concepts. Johnson was also with the starting offensive line at center during the media viewing period of Tuesday afternoon's practice.

Johnson has come on strong this offseason and "has done a really nice job," according to offensive line coach Will Friend, after appearing in just one game as a reserve in his first two seasons. "Man, it's night and day," Council said. "I remember when we got here in 2020, you'd think Tate was a guy, 'Man, is he going to play here?' But, oh my God, the progression's been unreal for this kid. He's stepped up when we needed him the most…. We're proud of him as a unit. He's just added another tool to the box." Council has prior experience at center from his time at Akron, where he spent his first four college seasons. Council started 24 consecutive games in which he as healthy at Akron, including two at center during the 2019 season. His versatility has been a plus since he arrived at Auburn, though most of his work with the Tigers has been at guard, and he has also repped at both guard spots this preseason. It's Johnson, though, who could emerge as Auburn's best bet at center in the event Brahms is limited, especially since Jailil Irvin - the backup at center the last two seasons, and who started the Birmingham Bowl in place of Brahms -- has been seen working at guard this fall. - Birmingham News

  08/16/22 - Derick HallSr/2023, Auburn, 6-3, 254 (DS#5 OLB) + More +

There was one position that didn't get to fully showcase its ability during Auburn's first fall scrimmage - and no, we're not talking about the quarterbacks, who sported orange non-contact jerseys Saturday evening in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Because the Tigers' quarterbacks didn't go live in the team's first preseason scrimmage, Auburn's edge defenders didn't get to go full bore. Derick Hall and Eku Leota were relegated to a game of tag when it came to pass-rushing opportunities Saturday evening, but the duo-coming off a highly productive 2021 campaign-still came through with some pressure in the backfield. Leota was credited with one sack during the scrimmage, while Hall could have finished with a couple of his own, coach Bryan Harsin said afterward. Neither one got to actually hit the quarterbacks, but that didn't stop them from flaunting after forcing the offense into some potentially negative plays. "Our edges can bend the corner," Harsin said. "Here's the one thing - our guys know. They know, they kind of run by and razz each other a little bit."

Hall and Leota hope they can maintain that kind of production once the games actually count and once they can really let loose on opposing quarterbacks. The two proved to be a dynamic duo off the edge last season, their first playing together after Leota transferred from Northwestern, as they combined for 16 sacks, 22.5 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles. Hall led Auburn with nine sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss last season while picking up second-team All-SEC honors. He hopes to break the program's single-season sack record - Nick Fairley's 11.5 during the 2010 national championship campaign - this fall. "That's the goal," Hall said. "Last year was a really good year. I went back and watched some film and could've definitely had that opportunity last year, and I definitely should've had that opportunity last year, so I'm just trying to make that step and turn pressures and missed sacks into sacks and help this team get better. So, that's the goal." - Birmingham News

  08/16/22 - *Tank BigsbyJr/2023, Auburn, 6-0, 215 (DS#8 RB) + More +

Auburn will start Year 2 of the Bryan Harsin era unranked in both major polls. A week after failing to crack the top-25 of the coaches poll, Auburn also found itself on the outside looking in of the preseason AP poll released Monday. Six SEC teams were ranked in the preseason AP poll, led by Alabama at No. 1 and defending national champion Georgia at No. 3. Texas A&M (No. 6), Arkansas (No. 19), Kentucky (No. 20) and Ole Miss (No. 21) were also ranked. Auburn was 11th among "other receiving votes," ostensibly placing the Tigers at No. 36 in the country entering the season. In all, nine SEC teams received more votes than Auburn, with Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi State ahead of Auburn among those outside the top-25. It's the second straight year that Auburn, which is coming of a 6-7 campaign in Harsin's debut season, has been unranked in the preseason AP poll. It's the first time since the 2001-02 seasons that the Tigers have been unranked in consecutive preseason polls. - Birmingham News

  08/12/22 - Anders CarlsonrSr/2023, Auburn, 6-5, 219 (DS#7 K) + More +

Anders Carlson walked to the 35-yard line of Auburn's practice field, a heavy brace still covering his left knee, and unloaded on a ball teed up for kickoff. The sixth-year Auburn kicker bombed the kickoff into the end zone for a touchback Tuesday morning during the team's fourth practice of fall camp. If not for that brace on his surgically repaired left knee - his non-kicking leg - it would be difficult to tell Carlson is coming off a major injury and extended recovery this offseason. "Yeah, he looks like it," Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said when asked if Carlson will be prepared for the season opener Sept. 3 against Mercer. "…I still think he hadn't completely just put everything into his swing, but he put it in the end zone. That's the thing; he's got the leg. So, he's an elite talent that way." Carlson may not be quite back to his peak form just yet, but he's tracking toward being back to his old ways when the season gets underway in less than four weeks.

That's good news for the Tigers, considering Carlson has handled place-kicking duties for each of the last four seasons and ranks third on Auburn's career scoring list (352 points) and second in program history in career field goals made (67). He'll have a chance to build on those numbers - and close the gap between himself and his older brother, Daniel Carlson, who holds the school record in both categories (480 points and 92 field goals made) - this season after returning from the ACL injury that cost him the final three games of last season. - Birmingham News

  08/10/22 - Owen PappoeSr/2023, Auburn, 6-0, 225 (DS#5 ILB) + More +

The first question of the day for Owen Pappoe couldn't have been simpler, but it put an ear-to-ear grin on the fourth-year linebacker's face. "How are you feeling?" Understandably, Pappoe was good. Fresh out of the helmet for the first time in a long time, it had been months since he was on a football field and helming Auburn's defense. Last year, Pappoe suffered a leg injury that took him off the field on multiple occasions, keeping him out of eight of Auburn's 13 games, including its final four. After logging 142 tackles and not missing a game in his first two seasons, Pappoe totaled just 23 stops in five contests in 2021.

The linebacker missed all of spring practice recovering, and Friday marked the first time he was a full go for an Auburn practice since the middle of last season. He made it evident he wasn't taking it for granted. "I'm actually glad it happened in a way," Pappoe said of his injury. "You hear all the time, when you have former players come to speak and they kind of tell you the game could be taken away from you at any minute. Hearing it, it's like, 'OK, let me go hard because there's people who have been there that wish they could do it again.' But actually going through it, bro, it's a whole other feeling. "It's given me a whole new appreciation for the game, and it makes me want to go even harder than I ever have before." In the second half of Auburn's 28-20 loss at Penn State, Pappoe left with a leg injury and was out for the next four games, returning for the Tigers' games against Ole Miss and Texas A&M before being sidelined for the remainder of the season. - Opelika-Auburn News

  08/10/22 - Kam StuttsrSr/2024, Auburn, 6-5, 319 (DS#55 OG) + More +

Kam Stutts has bided his time in Auburn's offensive line room for three seasons. Now, the redshirt senior is trying to make sure his time has come. A career reserve, Stutts has seen his stock rise since the spring and appears to be making a push for the starting job at left guard in fall camp. "He's stepped up big time," left tackle Kilian Zierer said. "…He's finally getting playing time, getting out there. I think he's done really well so far." Stutts, a former three-star prospect out of Killen, has appeared in 25 games over the last three seasons but his role was that of a depth piece and special teams contributor.

His trajectory began to change in the spring, however, when he took advantage of first-team reps at left guard while returning starter Brandon Council was sidelined following an offseason procedure. The 6-foot-5, 339-pounder made the most of those 15 practices with the first-team offensive line, with offensive line coach Will Friend lauding Stutts' growth at the position, particularly from a consistency and preparation standpoint. Stutts, according to Friend, took his preparation seriously throughout the spring and carried everything - from fundamentals and schematics of the offense - through from meetings to walkthroughs, individual work, team drills and into scrimmages. - Birmingham News

  08/10/22 - Jahquez RobinsonrSr/2026, Auburn, 6-2, 201 (DS#52 FS) + More +

Early August can be a hunt for names. Everyone knows about the established Alabama stars like Bryce Young, Will Anderson or Jordan Battle. Everyone with a casual viewing experience knows what to expect from guys like that. But what about the unproven guys -- the ones you might not see coming? Anderson, for example, had his freshman breakout season after preseason murmurs hinted at the potential before the 2020 season. Well, Nick Saban and his two coordinators mentioned a few names Sunday that might be worth watching -- not with Anderson-level expectations -- but as possible contributors this fall. It began when Saban threw out a name from off the radar when discussing the healthy competition at cornerback.

Third-year player Jahquez Robinson, who appeared in one game on special teams in two seasons, has shown considerable improvement, Saban said unprompted. His was the first of a few notable names dropped by Crimson Tide coaches -- the most of whom were discussed on the defensive side of the ball. Coordinator Pete Golding added Terrion Arnold to the cornerback discussion outside of the main three of Kool-Aid McKinstry, Khyree Jackson and Eli Ricks. The redshirt freshman from Tallahassee didn't see any action a year ago. At middle linebacker, Henry To'o To'o has among the safest starting jobs but there's competition to play the other inside position. Fifth-year senior Jaylen Moody exited a brief stay in the transfer portal and is the leading candidate for the Will linebacker spot. - Birmingham News

  08/10/22 - Jayson JonesrSr/2025, Auburn, 6-6, 325 (DS#59 DT) + More +

Jayson Jones is a mountain of a man. At 6-foot-6 and 328 pounds, the Oregon transfer is the largest player along Auburn's defensive line this season, and the Tigers are hoping he can help plug a hole in the middle of that line this fall. While Jones, who arrived in the spring, has already shown off one important trait that has one of his veteran teammates reminding him of Derrick Brown, the former Auburn standout who earned unanimous All-America honors in 2019. "When Derrick was here, he would gobble up two or three people (in the trenches), and Jayson has that ability to do that," senior edge defender Derick Hall said. "… To be able to have that, it helps everyone as a whole." Jones acclimated himself to Auburn's defense in the spring and quickly worked his way up the depth chart. He has been working with the first-team defensive line early in fall camp, alongside returning starters Colby Wooden and Marcus Harris, and he's expected to head into Week 1 as the Tigers' starting nose tackle, filling the vacancy left by the graduation of former UAB transfer Tony Fair after last season. - Birmingham News

  08/10/22 - Owen PappoeSr/2023, Auburn, 6-0, 225 (DS#5 ILB) + More +

Colby Wooden never experienced a losing season in his life, at least not until last fall. Auburn's 6-7 campaign, which saw the team lose five straight games to end the season, marked the program's first losing record since 2012. It was a difficult season for Wooden and many of his teammates to endure. "That was a tough pill to swallow," Wooden said. In the wake of that season, Bryan Harsin's first as head coach of the Tigers, Auburn saw considerable turnover both on its roster and its coaching staff. Nineteen players transferred out of the program after the season, and the staff was overhauled, all part of a tumultuous offseason that cast uncertainty over the direction of the program.

Wooden was one of a trio of Auburn defenders who considered leaving, not through the transfer portal, but to declare early for the NFL Draft. Wooden, edge defender Derick Hall and linebacker Owen Pappoe all weighed their options but ultimately chose to return for another season on the Plains-a chance to improve their stock individually, as well as an opportunity at redemption for the program. "It's just unfinished business, man," Pappoe said. "We didn't want to go out like that, for real, bro. Me, personally, I'm tired of losing, and that's the message we've all been preaching to the team. We want to come out and make a difference this year, so we're going into this season with a chip on our shoulder." For Pappoe, the decision was a simpler one. He has been a starter at linebacker since the first game of his freshman season, and he entered last year as a potential early-round NFL Draft pick. Those hopes were dashed, though, as he dealt with an injury that sidelined him for all but five games and required postseason surgery to correct. - Birmingham News

  08/09/22 - Joko WillisrJr/2025, Auburn, 6-2, 212 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Joko Willis was sandwiched between Derick Hall and edge coach Roc Bellantoni, an arm draped over each one's shoulder and a sly grin on his face. It was early June during a position group dinner at Bellantoni's house, and Willis' presence drew some attention. No, the former junior college linebacker wasn't crashing the party; he was merely bonding with some of his new position mates. After spending his first season at linebacker for Auburn last fall, Willis is shifting into a different role as the Tigers open fall practices Friday. He'll now be working with Auburn's edge defenders in what defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding described as a "hybrid" role within the Tigers' defense.

Schmedding confirmed Willis' new role Thursday on the eve of fall camp in a move that should help alleviate concerns about depth at the edge position this season. The Tigers entered spring with just three scholarship players at edge-seniors Derick Hall and Eku Leota, and redshirt freshman Dylan Brooks, a former four-star prospect who did not see the field last season. Now Auburn enters fall practices with five men in the room, with Willis as well as Western Kentucky transfer Marcus Bragg, who joined the program this summer. "That's one of the top priorities for us, is building dependable depth," Schmedding said. "We talk about not just being on the field but being dependable. That's the consistency that goes along with that communication, doing your job, those type of things. We talk about the time to build trust isn't third-and-1 in the Iron Bowl. That's got to be built from January all the way through." - Birmingham News

  08/09/22 - Jeremiah WrightrSr/2026, Auburn, 6-5, 331 (DS#15 OG) + More +

Jeremiah Wright is on the move once again as Auburn begins fall practices. The 6-foot-5, 335-pounder has switched from offensive line back to defensive line ahead of the team's first practice Friday, head coach Bryan Harsin confirmed. Wright, a junior, signed with Auburn as an offensive tackle in 2020 and has switched sides of the ball multiple times already during his career. "He and I had a conversation about that," Harsin said Thursday. "It's where he wanted to be, and I think that's important, too. I think a guy who wants to play a certain position as well, and he's a smart guy. He's thought about it. This is not just an impulse thing. He's thought about it, what he wants to do."

A former three-star prospect out of Selma, Wright began his career as an offensive line prospect for Auburn. He made the move to defensive tackle ahead of the team's season opener two years ago and appeared in six games as a reserve during his freshman season. He finished the year with four tackles, including one for a loss, with three of those stops coming in Auburn's Citrus Bowl loss to Northwestern. Wright made an early push up Auburn's depth chart at defensive tackle last spring before sustaining a torn ACL that cost him the entire 2021 season. He then began working back at offensive line during bowl practices and continued to rep on that side of the ball throughout the spring, working at left guard with the second-team offense. - Birmingham News

  08/04/22 - Owen PappoeSr/2023, Auburn, 6-0, 225 (DS#5 ILB) + More +

Linebacker is a premium position for new defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding. The linebacker room will look different with the departures of McClain and Wooten. Owen Pappoe returning was impactful for head coach Bryan Harsin. Auburn wants to win games with a sound defense that stops the run. They'll need the linebacker unit to succeed if it wants to improve on last season's record. Another losing streak can't happen if Harsin intends to stay at Auburn, and the LB room will be pivotal to his outcomes. Auburn lost two stars players when McClain and Wooten left the Plains. Pappoe is an elite player when healthy. New linebackers coach Christian Robinson will be counting on solid contributions from Pappoe this season. If younger players can elevate, then it'll be good for Auburn. If Tisdol or Willis struggle to find footing, it'll be rough on a defense that counts heavily on its linebackers. Steiner is another player who could be essential. - Birmingham News
