  08/19/22 - OG Tate JohnsonrSr/2025, Auburn

Auburn's offensive line got a boost of stability in the offseason with the return of center Nick Brahms for a sixth season, but with the fifth-year starter coming off an offseason knee procedure, the Tigers have had two additional players receive first-team reps at center this preseason. Brandon Council - a seventh-year player - and junior Tate Johnson have rotated in at center along with Brahms during the first week-plus of practices, providing Auburn with additional depth at center should Brahms be slowed by his surgically repaired knee. Johnson received some first-team work at center during Saturday's scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with head coach Bryan Harsin noting Johnson's improved understanding of Auburn's offensive concepts. Johnson was also with the starting offensive line at center during the media viewing period of Tuesday afternoon's practice.

Johnson has come on strong this offseason and "has done a really nice job," according to offensive line coach Will Friend, after appearing in just one game as a reserve in his first two seasons. "Man, it's night and day," Council said. "I remember when we got here in 2020, you'd think Tate was a guy, 'Man, is he going to play here?' But, oh my God, the progression's been unreal for this kid. He's stepped up when we needed him the most…. We're proud of him as a unit. He's just added another tool to the box." Council has prior experience at center from his time at Akron, where he spent his first four college seasons. Council started 24 consecutive games in which he as healthy at Akron, including two at center during the 2019 season. His versatility has been a plus since he arrived at Auburn, though most of his work with the Tigers has been at guard, and he has also repped at both guard spots this preseason. It's Johnson, though, who could emerge as Auburn's best bet at center in the event Brahms is limited, especially since Jailil Irvin - the backup at center the last two seasons, and who started the Birmingham Bowl in place of Brahms -- has been seen working at guard this fall. - Birmingham News
