  12/01/19 - Khalil TateSr/2020, Arizona + More +

Arizona football coach Kevin Sumlin is returning for a third season in the desert. Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke made the announcement after the Wildcats' 24-14 loss to rival Arizona State on Saturday night. Arizona failed to finish with a winning record or become bowl eligible in both of Sumlin's first two seasons, going a combined 9-15. The Wildcats opened this season 4-1, but closed with six straight losses, most in lopsided fashion. Arizona failed to live up to offensive expectations after the fast start and finished among the worst in the FBS in total defense, scoring defense and passing defense. - AP College Football

Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin has fired defensive coordinator Marcel Yates and linebackers coach John Rushing. Sumlin promoted defensive analyst and former NFL assistant Chuck Cecil to interim defensive coordinator. He also promoted Hank Hobson from analyst to an on-field coaching role. Yates remained on Arizona's staff after Sumlin was hired to replace Rich Rodriguez, who was fired in 2018. Arizona has struggled defensively this season, ranking 119th in the FBS in total defense, allowing 469.9 yards per game, and 118th in scoring defense, giving up 35 points per game. The Wildcats have allowed 132 points the past three games, all losses. Cecil spent 15 seasons as an NFL assistant before being hired as an analyst by Rodriguez in 2017. - AP College Football

  10/06/19 - Khalil TateSr/2020, Arizona + More +

Khalil Tate threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns in his return from a leg injury and Arizona used stops at the goal line and midfield on Colorado's final two drives to wrap up its 35-30 win on Saturday. Tate completed 31 of 41 passes and only ran four times, including a 7-yard scamper on third-and-6 from midfield in the closing minutes that allowed Arizona (4-1, 2-0) to run out the clock and leave Folsom Field as the Pac-12 South's last unbeaten team. The Buffaloes (3-2, 1-1) sorely missed star receiver Laviska Shenault (core muscle injury), who sat out, as well as safety Mikial Onu, who had a first-half interception but left on the first defensive series of the second half with a torso injury.

Without him, the Buffs surrendered three second-half touchdowns after taking a 20-14 halftime lead. The Wildcats weren't whistled for a penalty until the final play of the third quarter - offside - during the Buffalos' longest drive of the day, a 14-play marathon that stalled with Colorado failing to score on three plays from inside the Arizona 5. They settled for James Stefanou's 20-yard field goal and a 30-28 lead. That stall proved costly when the Wildcats responded with Nathan Tilford's 5-yard TD run that put Arizona on top 35-30 with 6:51 left. - Arizona/AP College Football

  09/15/19 - Khalil TateSr/2020, Arizona + More +

Arizona scored one touchdown on a bursting run, hit some chunk plays in the passing game. When it mattered most, the Wildcats played the power game - and Texas Tech was helpless to stop them. Arizona ran the ball 13 straight times during a 99-yard drive in the fourth quarter and Gary Brightwell capped it with his second touchdown, lifting the Wildcats to a 28-14 win over Texas Tech Saturday night. "They imposed their will on us," Red Raiders coach Matt Wells said. "That's tough to take." Khalil Tate accounted for 314 yards and two touchdowns, including an 84-yard run, and Arizona (2-1) racked up 499 total yards in what was expected to be an offensive showcase in the desert. The deciding drive was power-driven.

Backed up to their 1-yard line in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats ran the ball right down the Red Raiders' throat, 13 times in all until Brightwell scored on a 1-yard run with four minutes left. "To go 99 yards to win the game, that is a step that should give us confidence heading into conference play," Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin said. The Wildcats also bounced back from shaky defensive performances their first two games, keeping Texas Tech's vaunted passing game under control most of the night. Alan Bowman threw for 311 yards and hit McLane Mannix on an 8-yard touchdown to put the Red Raiders (2-1) up 14-13 in the third quarter. - AP College Football

Gary Brightwell ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on five carries, Khalil Tate accounted for three scores and Arizona bounced back from a disappointing opening loss by routing Northern Arizona 65-41 on Saturday night. Arizona (1-1) had an extra week off to think about its opening loss to Hawaii. The Wildcats took it out on the FCS Lumberjacks (1-1), scoring on their seven drives and racking up 517 yards while setting a school record for points in a half for a 51-13 halftime lead.

Arizona had 720 yards of total offense, 431 rushing. Brightwell scored on a 94-yard run, Darrius Smith scored twice, and J.J. Taylor ran for 102 yards and a touchdown. Tate hit 14 of 17 passes for 138 yards and threw two touchdowns to Tayvian Cunningham before being replaced by Grant Gunnell with 7:56 left in the second quarter. Tate played two series in the third quarter before sitting for good. Coming off an opening win against Missouri State, Northern Arizona had a few good offensive moments against Arizona, but dug too a deep of an early hole to ever have much of a chance. Case Cookus threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for the Lumberjacks. - AP College Football
