The Arizona Wildcats have had four players selected in the NFL draft in in past five years. Just four. No Wildcats were picked in the 2020 NFL draft. In 2019, defensive tackle P.J. Johnson was Arizona's lone pick. Johnson went to the Lions in the seventh round. In 2018, defensive back Dane Cruikshank went to the Tennessee Titans in the fifth round. No Wildcats were selected in the 2017 NFL draft. Khalil Tate was once considered a top prospect for the NFL. He didn't get picked in the 2020 NFl draft. Tate has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent, as a wide receiver. Taylor has agreed to a deal with the New England Patriots. Whittaker has agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Since 2010, Arizona has produced 15 picks in the NFL, the second-worst mark in the conference (Washington State has 12 during that time). - Arizona Republic

Last August, before his roller coaster ride of a senior season began, Khalil Tate revealed that he had a Fathead of Donovan McNabb when he was younger. The former NFL quarterback caught wind of the Arizona QB's wall art via Twitter. McNabb responded in kind: "Appreciate you, young fella. Keep grinding." So began a relationship that, in McNabb's words, "came full circle" several months later. Tate's agent, Zeke Sandhu, reached out to McNabb, who resides in the Phoenix area. Sandhu asked McNabb if he could work with Tate as he prepared for the Wildcats' pro day and the 2020 NFL draft. McNabb gladly accepted the assignment. The six-time Pro Bowl selection believes in giving back. He also believes Tate - one of the most prolific yet polarizing players in UA football history - has untapped talent.

"Sometimes all you need is an extra push," McNabb said this week. "Some guidance to get you over the hump." Tate faces significant hurdles to prove he's more like the player who set multiple records as a sophomore than the one who lost his full-time job as a senior. The postponement of pro day, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, won't help. It would have given Tate a chance to show scouts what he's been working on with McNabb, on and off the field. Instead, because of the coronavirus pandemic, Tate and countless others must wait for another opportunity that might never come. "It's unfortunate what happened," McNabb said, "because he was ready. And he's gonna continue to be ready when the time comes." - Arizona Star News

Arizona's pro day, scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed because of ongoing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. The UA football program on Thursday indefinitely suspended all team activities, including spring practices. Practice was to have resumed Tuesday evening, following a week off for spring break, with pro day taking place in the morning. On Friday, the NFL sent a memo to its teams prohibiting "all in-person pre-draft visits involving draft-eligible players effective at the end of the business day, until further notice. Only one Arizona player, tailback J.J. Taylor, participated in the combine this year. Other players who conceivably could be drafted include quarterback Khalil Tate and cornerback Jace Whittaker. The latter participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl in January. - Arizona Star News

Arizona football coach Kevin Sumlin is returning for a third season in the desert. Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke made the announcement after the Wildcats' 24-14 loss to rival Arizona State on Saturday night. Arizona failed to finish with a winning record or become bowl eligible in both of Sumlin's first two seasons, going a combined 9-15. The Wildcats opened this season 4-1, but closed with six straight losses, most in lopsided fashion. Arizona failed to live up to offensive expectations after the fast start and finished among the worst in the FBS in total defense, scoring defense and passing defense. - AP College Football

Khalil Tate threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns in his return from a leg injury and Arizona used stops at the goal line and midfield on Colorado's final two drives to wrap up its 35-30 win on Saturday. Tate completed 31 of 41 passes and only ran four times, including a 7-yard scamper on third-and-6 from midfield in the closing minutes that allowed Arizona (4-1, 2-0) to run out the clock and leave Folsom Field as the Pac-12 South's last unbeaten team. The Buffaloes (3-2, 1-1) sorely missed star receiver Laviska Shenault (core muscle injury), who sat out, as well as safety Mikial Onu, who had a first-half interception but left on the first defensive series of the second half with a torso injury.

Without him, the Buffs surrendered three second-half touchdowns after taking a 20-14 halftime lead. The Wildcats weren't whistled for a penalty until the final play of the third quarter - offside - during the Buffalos' longest drive of the day, a 14-play marathon that stalled with Colorado failing to score on three plays from inside the Arizona 5. They settled for James Stefanou's 20-yard field goal and a 30-28 lead. That stall proved costly when the Wildcats responded with Nathan Tilford's 5-yard TD run that put Arizona on top 35-30 with 6:51 left. - Arizona/AP College Football

Arizona scored one touchdown on a bursting run, hit some chunk plays in the passing game. When it mattered most, the Wildcats played the power game - and Texas Tech was helpless to stop them. Arizona ran the ball 13 straight times during a 99-yard drive in the fourth quarter and Gary Brightwell capped it with his second touchdown, lifting the Wildcats to a 28-14 win over Texas Tech Saturday night. "They imposed their will on us," Red Raiders coach Matt Wells said. "That's tough to take." Khalil Tate accounted for 314 yards and two touchdowns, including an 84-yard run, and Arizona (2-1) racked up 499 total yards in what was expected to be an offensive showcase in the desert. The deciding drive was power-driven.

Backed up to their 1-yard line in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats ran the ball right down the Red Raiders' throat, 13 times in all until Brightwell scored on a 1-yard run with four minutes left. "To go 99 yards to win the game, that is a step that should give us confidence heading into conference play," Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin said. The Wildcats also bounced back from shaky defensive performances their first two games, keeping Texas Tech's vaunted passing game under control most of the night. Alan Bowman threw for 311 yards and hit McLane Mannix on an 8-yard touchdown to put the Red Raiders (2-1) up 14-13 in the third quarter. - AP College Football

How often will Khalil Tate run in 2019? And how effective and explosive will he be when he does? Arizona has conducted most of its 11-on-11 work behind closed doors. But in the glimpses that have been open to media observation, Tate has looked fast and spry - more like the 2017 version of the dual-threat quarterback who rushed for 1,411 yards than the '18 version who was nicked up and managed only 224. Practice observers have noted the same.

"It's night and day," UA coach Kevin Sumlin said Saturday when asked about Tate's mobility and escapability. "He looks comfortable. He looks healthy." The Wildcats had just completed their final scrimmage of training camp, going 100 plays, including special teams. Sumlin said Tate "took off a couple times … and made some first downs" - a revelation that Arizona fans should find encouraging entering the 2019 season. "I'm healthy," Tate said. "When I'm healthy, I can do a lot...as you guys have seen in the past." - Arizona Republic

A year ago, no player in the country got more preseason love than Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate. Coming off a sophomore season in which he rushed for 1,411 yards (9.2 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns while also throwing for 1,591 yards and 14 touchdowns, Tate was a chic Heisman Trophy pick - even though he was switching from Rich Rodriguez's read-option-heavy offense to Kevin Sumlin's version of the spread. After all, Sumlin had coached Johnny Manziel to the Heisman in 2012, and the assumption was that Sumlin would tailor his pass-happy scheme to the special skill set of Tate.

Tate may want to show NFL scouts that he can play quarterback at the next level, but the only way he's ever going to have that shot is by proving he's an efficient dual-threat guy. His passing did improve as the year went on, as he threw for 2,530 yards and 26 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. The experience he gained in 2018 could help him reach his full potential in 2019, if Sumlin is willing to let him do what he does best and keep defenses on their heels. - LA Times
