The reigning Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year returns to Western Michigan this season, and if the college football analysts are correct, Treshaun Hayward's senior campaign should be another special one. Phil Steele selected the 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker as a Fourth Team All-American heading into 2020, marking Hayward's third preseason accolade, after the Ypsilanti native and Ann Arbor Skyline graduate earned first team honors on all-conferences lists from Steele and Athlon Sports. Hayward wrapped up his junior campaign ranked third nationally with 142 tackles, to go along with 10.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He joins Washington State's Jahad Woods as college football's only returning players to tally more than 130 tackles and 10 stops for loss. - Kalamazoo Gazette

  07/13/20 - Roy LopezrSr/2021, Arizona + More +

The New Mexico State defense lost its most experienced defensive player and one of the best players on the roster, to the transfer portal. Aggies senior defensive lineman Roy Lopez announced on Monday that he plans to enter the transfer portal. Lopez was a four-year starter for the Aggies on the defensive line. He was limited to eight games last season after suffering a leg injury in Week 1 at Washington State. The Phoenix native announced his intention to transfer in the days following the Pac-12's announcement last week that the league plans to play a conference-only schedule, eliminating the Aggies Aug. 29 season opener at UCLA. - Las Cruces Sun News

  04/28/20 - Khalil TateSr/2020, Arizona + More +

The Arizona Wildcats have had four players selected in the NFL draft in in past five years. Just four. No Wildcats were picked in the 2020 NFL draft. In 2019, defensive tackle P.J. Johnson was Arizona's lone pick. Johnson went to the Lions in the seventh round. In 2018, defensive back Dane Cruikshank went to the Tennessee Titans in the fifth round. No Wildcats were selected in the 2017 NFL draft. Khalil Tate was once considered a top prospect for the NFL. He didn't get picked in the 2020 NFl draft. Tate has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent, as a wide receiver. Taylor has agreed to a deal with the New England Patriots. Whittaker has agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Since 2010, Arizona has produced 15 picks in the NFL, the second-worst mark in the conference (Washington State has 12 during that time). - Arizona Republic

  03/21/20 - Khalil TateSr/2020, Arizona + More +

Last August, before his roller coaster ride of a senior season began, Khalil Tate revealed that he had a Fathead of Donovan McNabb when he was younger. The former NFL quarterback caught wind of the Arizona QB's wall art via Twitter. McNabb responded in kind: "Appreciate you, young fella. Keep grinding." So began a relationship that, in McNabb's words, "came full circle" several months later. Tate's agent, Zeke Sandhu, reached out to McNabb, who resides in the Phoenix area. Sandhu asked McNabb if he could work with Tate as he prepared for the Wildcats' pro day and the 2020 NFL draft. McNabb gladly accepted the assignment. The six-time Pro Bowl selection believes in giving back. He also believes Tate - one of the most prolific yet polarizing players in UA football history - has untapped talent.

"Sometimes all you need is an extra push," McNabb said this week. "Some guidance to get you over the hump." Tate faces significant hurdles to prove he's more like the player who set multiple records as a sophomore than the one who lost his full-time job as a senior. The postponement of pro day, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, won't help. It would have given Tate a chance to show scouts what he's been working on with McNabb, on and off the field. Instead, because of the coronavirus pandemic, Tate and countless others must wait for another opportunity that might never come. "It's unfortunate what happened," McNabb said, "because he was ready. And he's gonna continue to be ready when the time comes." - Arizona Star News

Tristan Cooper was among the UA football players hoping to catch scouts' eyes at the university's now-canceled pro day. More than a half dozen Arizona football players were supposed to work out for NFL scouts at the UA campus Tuesday. For most of those Wildcats, it was their one and only chance to showcase their skills in front of the NFL community at large. It was the most important job interview of their lives. Instead, that opportunity has been put on indefinite hold. It might not ever happen. Long shots might never get a shot. The coronavirus pandemic has shut down the world of sports - including pro days for NFL hopefuls. Late last week, the league prohibited all in-person contact between draft-eligible players and club personnel. The decision, made in the interest of curtailing the spread of the virus, could be especially damaging for players on the margins who haven't had previous opportunities to get in front of pro scouts.

"I'm sure there's going to be a lot of players this year that are going to fall between the cracks," said Corey Williams, the agent for UA safety Tristan Cooper. For players such as receiver Cedric Peterson, defensive tackle Finton Connolly and Cooper, pro day was their chance to get noticed, make an impression or change a perception scouts might have had about them. "I'm lost right now," Cooper said from his hometown of El Paso. "I'm not going to lie - I've battled with some demons. It was already a stressful journey going through these couple months of working out, and to be hit by this? I don't even know how to describe it. "Doubt kicks in. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. I'm trying to stay positive and keep going, and whatever happens, happens." - Arizona Star

Arizona's pro day, scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed because of ongoing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. The UA football program on Thursday indefinitely suspended all team activities, including spring practices. Practice was to have resumed Tuesday evening, following a week off for spring break, with pro day taking place in the morning. On Friday, the NFL sent a memo to its teams prohibiting "all in-person pre-draft visits involving draft-eligible players effective at the end of the business day, until further notice. Only one Arizona player, tailback J.J. Taylor, participated in the combine this year. Other players who conceivably could be drafted include quarterback Khalil Tate and cornerback Jace Whittaker. The latter participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl in January. - Arizona Star News
