Arizona Wildcats freshmen cornerbacks Edric Whitley and Khary Crump Jr. have stepped away from the UA after just two games into the 2020 season. Whitley announced on Twitter that he will to enter the transfer portal, while Crump is no longer with the program for unspecified reasons. The 5-foot-11-inch, 144-pound Whitley, a Pflugerville, Texas native, was rated by national recruiting websites as a three-star recruit, and was a member of Arizona's '20 recruiting class. Whitley committed to the UA over UNLV, Miami, Ole Miss, Sam Houston State and Texas Southern. - Arizona Star News

Oregon Ducks freshman linebacker Justin Flowe has a torn meniscus and will miss the rest of the 2020 season, a source confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive on Tuesday afternoon. The top-ranked linebacker and one of the top recruits in the country in the 2020 class, Flowe did not play in Oregon's win at Washington State and was not seen on the sideline, though Ducks coach Mario Cristobal said he traveled but was unavailable. Prior to the game, Flowe posted to Instagram that he would not be playing due to an injury but would "be back real soon ready and hungry." Tuesday morning, a member of Flowe's high school coaching staff tweeted that the former 5-star prospect tore his meniscus and would have surgery on Wednesday, which Flowe reposted to Instagram. Flowe, Oregon's backup weak-side linebacker, had one tackle in the season opener against Stanford. - Oregonian

The Honolulu native became the first true freshman to start for Washington State in a season opener and didn't stop there. De Laura's college debut went better than scripted, as the Hawaiian signal-caller accounted for three touchdowns in Washington State's 38-28 win over Oregon State. With his ability to scramble, de Laura added an element to WSU's offense the Cougars haven't seen in years, and perhaps not since another Saint Louis High graduate, Jason Gesser, played in Pullman. De Laura ran for one touchdown and finished with eight carries for 43 yards. He completed 18-of-33 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns through the air. - Spokesman-Review

Jayden de Laura passed for two touchdowns and ran for a score in his college debut, leading Washington State to a 38-28 victory Saturday night over Oregon State in the Pac-12 opener for both schools. De Laura, a 6-foot, 195-pound freshman from Honolulu, completed 18 of 33 passes for 227 yards and also rushed for 43 yards. Deon McIntosh had 147 yards rushing and a touchdown as the Cougars amassed 456 total yards. Nick Rolovich got a win in his first game as coach at Washington State, which was without running back Max Borghi. The junior has 28 career touchdowns, including 16 last season.

The Beavers rallied late behind quarterback Tristan Gebbia and cut the lead to 31-28 with 2:39 remaining on Jermar Jefferson's 15-yard run, and Gebbia's 2-point conversion pass to Trevon Bradford. But Washington State recovered the on-side kick and scored on the next play - a 44-yard touchdown run by Travell Harris. Gebbia passed for 329 yards and a touchdown, and Jefferson ran for 120 yards and three scores, but it wasn't enough for the Beavers, who haven't had a winning season since 2013. Washington State extended its lead to 28-7 on de Laura's 28-yard touchdown pass to Harris midway through the third quarter. - AP College Football

Another sequence of bad luck for Jaden Mitchell. During his weekly press conference leading up to the Arizona Wildcats' season opener at Utah, UA head coach Kevin Sumlin said the redshirt freshman wide receiver will miss the year with a knee injury. Sumlin also added freshman running back Frank Brown will miss 2-3 weeks with an MCL injury. Both Mitchell and Brown posted photos on Instagram of them wearing crutches and knee braces over the weekend. "So many emotions and not a lot of words," Mitchell posted. "Just know this is gonna be a hell of a story." Mitchell's latest setback is on his right knee; He suffered a left-knee injury in his senior year at Las Vegas' Desert Pines High School in 2017, which delayed his start at the UA until Sumlin's first season in 2018. The 5-foot-9-inch, 175-pound Mitchell also tested positive for COVID-19 during the summer and said he lost 14 pounds during his four-week quarantine. - Arizona Star News

While freshman running back Tank Bigsby has dazzled with two 100-yard games in a row, sophomore D.J. Williams has quietly been adding another element to the running game. In Auburn's loss to South Carolina, Williams had 17 rushing yards on four carries while also adding 26 receiving yards on two catches. It's the third game Williams has helped in both the receiving and the ground game, and he's done it while injured. Coming into the season, Williams was the second-most experienced running back on the Auburn depth chart, and he was second, behind Shaun Shivers, to hit the field in the season opener against Kentucky. However, both Williams and Shivers were injured before the Georgia game. While Shivers sat out, Williams still hit the field, but on a limited basis. Meanwhile, Bigsby had to take over the No. 1 running back's responsibilities, a role he stepped into smoothly. But even with the injuries, Williams has been able to help the team.

In his first game he played while injured, Williams wasn't able to do much. He made one catch for a loss of four yards. But after just a week to recover, Williams burst back onto the scene. Against Arkansas, Williams picked up 71 yards on eight carries, averaging 8.9 yards per carry, and made one catch for a gain of one yard. Williams took one of his carries for 41 yards, helping set up an Auburn field goal. Although Williams' production dropped against South Carolina, his runs showed off his ability to break tackles and forge through traffic. It was a positive sign that he's getting back to full strength. - Birmingham News

Junior offensive lineman Donovan Laie has changed his mind and will play for Arizona in 2020. One day after announcing his intent to transfer, the Wildcats' best blocker did a 180. "After much prayer with my family and talks about my future, I have decided that I will be taking my name out of the transfer portal and resuming my career at the University of Arizona," Laie tweeted Wednesday afternoon. The development is a significant one for Arizona, which needs its offense to perform at a high level to offset a depleted defense. Laie (6-5, 325) likely will play left guard this year after playing both tackle spots in his first two seasons. He played there briefly late last season when the coaching staff gave then-freshman Jordan Morgan a look at left tackle. Laie's father died last year, and family considerations have weighed heavily on the native of Oceanside, California. - Arizona Star News

Another veteran starter has elected to transfer out of the Arizona football program. Junior offensive lineman Donovan Laie, who has started 24 straight games for the Wildcats, announced Tuesday that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal. Laie (6-5, 325) has played left tackle, right tackle and left guard and is considered a possible NFL prospect. He is the fifth projected starter to leave the UA program this offseason, joining safety Scottie Young Jr., linebackers Tony Fields II and Colin Schooler, and receiver Brenden Schooler. When asked Friday about the players who have transferred, UA coach Kevin Sumlin said that "every situation is different." Laie hadn't informed the program he was entering the portal at that time. It's unclear why Laie decided to leave, but the recent death of his father could be a factor. Laie's father, Chris, died last November. Laie is one of seven siblings. The family lives in Oceanside, California. - Arizona Star News

Another key New Mexico State defender has entered the transfer portal. Aggies senior linebacker Rashie Hodge announced via Twitter that he has entered the transfer portal. "I have decided to enter the Transfer Portal, this is the best decision for me moving forward as a student athlete," Hodge said in his Twitter post. Hodge is the second projected starter in the front seven to enter the transfer portal after standout defensive lineman Roy Lopez left the program in July and quickly committed to Arizona.

Hodge, like Lopez, is an Arizona native who played junior college football at Glendale Community College. He was second on the team last season with 90 tackles and led the team with 10 tackles for loss with one interception, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in his first year at strong side linebacker for the Aggies last season. Hodge, along with defensive lineman Myles Vigne, had originally opted out of the 2020 season, according to head coach Doug Martin. The Aggies will likely look to redshirt sophomore Taylor Milton, redshirt freshman Ja'Marvin Hartfield to replace Hodge at strong side linebacker. - Las Cruces Sun News

Arizona's deepest position? Perhaps - even after the departure of multiyear starter J.J. Taylor. The favorite to start was and is senior Gary Brightwell, who has shown flashes of greatness while sharing time with Taylor and others. Brightwell rushed for 915 yards and eight touchdowns with a 5.8-yards-per-carry average in 2018 and '19. As for winter/spring participation, Brightwell falls into a category of players who'd have a difficult decision to make. Brightwell has NFL measurables. He also never has been a full-time starter. Still, would it be worth it for him to play in early 2021 with the draft coming soon after? - Arizona Star News

There are still far more questions than answers regarding the college football season, but as of now, teams around the nation are proceeding as they normally would. New Mexico State opened up fall camp on Friday night in Las Cruces, despite pleas from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham not to play, and with three of the games on its 2020 schedule already canceled. The vast majority of the Aggies' roster was on the practice field for NMSU; however, three players have opted out of the season due to the pandemic. Head coach Doug Martin announced that star linebacker Rashie Hodge and defensive lineman Myles Vigne will sit out the season, joining defensive lineman Jomaious williams, who opted out last week. - KTSM 9 News

UA coach Kevin Sumlin: 'If you're not gonna adhere to the protocol, then we can't have you here': Burrola, 21, implied in tweets that his scholarship had been reduced because he voiced concerns about his safety. The Pac-12 said earlier this month that it will honor scholarships of "student-athletes who choose not to participate in intercollegiate athletics during the coming academic year because of safety concerns about COVID-19," adding that they would also remain in good standing with their teams. However, Burrola also posted to Instagram Stories what appears to be a snippet of a text-message conversation in which he wrote that he was suspended "for violating COVID protocols." Burrola on Tuesday put that message on the background of his Twitter bio.

Burrola has also expressed skepticism about the severity of the coronavirus pandemic on his social media, tweeting on May 30 that "COVID-19 is fake." He appears to have deleted that tweet this week. On July 19, in response to a story about protests in Huntington Beach, California, over Gov. Gavin Newsom's shutdown order, Burrola tweeted: "Open up the country!" Sumlin said Tuesday that it's "fine to have that stance" about the virus. "But if that's what you believe, and you're not gonna adhere to the protocol, I am ultimately responsible for a lot of other people based on that," he said. A Star reporter contacted Burrola on Monday, but he declined to comment. - Arizona Star News

Arizona Wildcats offensive lineman Edgar Burrola has been suspended from the team for violating the athletic department's COVID-19 protocols. Burrola, a redshirt junior from Las Vegas who started six games at right tackle last season, remained on the roster with a reduced scholarship as of Tuesday afternoon. Burrola's resistance to following safety protocols, which include face coverings and physical distancing during on-campus workouts, led to concern within the program that Arizona could become another Michigan State or Rutgers — schools that shut down workouts because of coronavirus outbreaks. - AZ Central
