 Gary Brightwell, Arizona, Player News

  01/30/21 - RB Gary BrightwellSr/2021, Arizona, 5-11, 218 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Running back Gary Brightwell is the second Arizona Wildcats draft prospect to receive an invitation to the NFL scouting combine. Although the combine will not be conducted in a traditional manner this year - all testing will be done at campus pro days as opposed to a single gathering in Indianapolis because of the coronavirus pandemic - it's a positive development for Brightwell's draft prospects. The NFL typically invites about 330 players to the combine. Receiving an invite doesn't guarantee a player will be drafted, but it's an indication that the league sees the player as draftable. Former UA cornerback Lorenzo Burns also has received a combine invite. - Arizona Star News

Arizona Wildcats running back Gary Brightwell posted a message on social media Sunday morning and shared his plans to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. He rushed for a team-high 390 yards and a touchdown in five games and also posted two 100-yard performances. During his four years as a Wildcat, Brightwell had 1,305 career rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and averaged 5.3 yards per carry. - Arizona Star News

Arizona's deepest position? Perhaps - even after the departure of multiyear starter J.J. Taylor. The favorite to start was and is senior Gary Brightwell, who has shown flashes of greatness while sharing time with Taylor and others. Brightwell rushed for 915 yards and eight touchdowns with a 5.8-yards-per-carry average in 2018 and '19. As for winter/spring participation, Brightwell falls into a category of players who'd have a difficult decision to make. Brightwell has NFL measurables. He also never has been a full-time starter. Still, would it be worth it for him to play in early 2021 with the draft coming soon after? - Arizona Star News

Gary Brightwell ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on five carries, Khalil Tate accounted for three scores and Arizona bounced back from a disappointing opening loss by routing Northern Arizona 65-41 on Saturday night. Arizona (1-1) had an extra week off to think about its opening loss to Hawaii. The Wildcats took it out on the FCS Lumberjacks (1-1), scoring on their seven drives and racking up 517 yards while setting a school record for points in a half for a 51-13 halftime lead.

Arizona had 720 yards of total offense, 431 rushing. Brightwell scored on a 94-yard run, Darrius Smith scored twice, and J.J. Taylor ran for 102 yards and a touchdown. Tate hit 14 of 17 passes for 138 yards and threw two touchdowns to Tayvian Cunningham before being replaced by Grant Gunnell with 7:56 left in the second quarter. Tate played two series in the third quarter before sitting for good. Coming off an opening win against Missouri State, Northern Arizona had a few good offensive moments against Arizona, but dug too a deep of an early hole to ever have much of a chance. Case Cookus threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for the Lumberjacks. - AP College Football
