Lopez played one season at the University of Arizona as a graduate transfer and recorded 18 tackles with four for losses in five games with the Wildcats last season at defensive tackle. He was up for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Lopez, 6-foot-2, 318 pounds, had 137 tackles, 20 for losses, during his New Mexico State football career. He made the transition from offense to defense in college. Lopez played football for his father Roy Jr., in high school. "What Roy brings to the table for an NFL team is that he's hungry," the elder Lopez said. "He's been coached by some of the best coaches in the state. He truly flourished when I let him go with train with others." - Arizona Republic

The New Mexico State defense lost its most experienced defensive player and one of the best players on the roster, to the transfer portal. Aggies senior defensive lineman Roy Lopez announced on Monday that he plans to enter the transfer portal. Lopez was a four-year starter for the Aggies on the defensive line. He was limited to eight games last season after suffering a leg injury in Week 1 at Washington State. The Phoenix native announced his intention to transfer in the days following the Pac-12's announcement last week that the league plans to play a conference-only schedule, eliminating the Aggies Aug. 29 season opener at UCLA. - Las Cruces Sun News
