The NFL Scouting Combine was about the last thing the league did in 2020 that wasn't affected by the coronavirus pandemic. But almost a year later, the NFL has decided the 2021 version of the event will be drastically changed because of the COVID-19 crisis. The top prospects for the NFL Draft won't gather in Indianapolis next month, as they have annually since 1987. But the league doesn't consider the combine canceled. Instead, a memo sent from the league office to the NFL's 32 teams on Monday said, "The 2021 combine will be conducted in a different format. There will be no in-person workouts at the combine. Instead, any workouts will take place on the individual pro days on college campuses." To keep each team from having to send personnel to every college pro day, the NFL said it would "ensure that all clubs have access to video from those workouts." - Birmingham News

Tennessee has fired football coach Jeremy Pruitt, two assistants and seven members of the Volunteers' recruiting and support staff for cause after an internal investigation found what the university chancellor called "serious violations of NCAA rules." Chancellor Donde Plowman said Pruitt was responsible for overseeing the program. Tennessee has been conducting an internal investigation since at least the middle of November into allegations of recruiting violations. Also fired Monday were assistant football coaches Brian Niedermeyer and Shelton Felton, four members of the on-campus football recruiting staff, the director and assistant director of football player personnel and a football analyst/quality control coach. The chancellor said the potential NCAA issues involved Level I and II violations with a number of people and incidents. NCAA investigators became more actively involved within the past 10 days. - AP College Football

Alabama football offensive lineman Chris Owens is taking advantage of the NCAA's COVID-19 eligibility waiver, returning for a second senior season in 2021. Owens was UA's most valuable backup on the offensive line in 2020, filling in for Evan Neal at right tackle against Arkansas and for both College Football Playoff games at center. Owens also started five games at center in 2019 before an injury forced him out of the lineup, never to return as the starting center. He finished that season playing some as a tight end in specialty packages. - Montgomery Advertiser

  01/15/21 - *Dylan MosesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 225 (DS#7 ILB) + More +

Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses confirmed Thursday that he is entering the 2021 NFL draft. Moses, who returned in 2020 for his senior season, turned down a chance to play an additional college season in 2021 that would have been made possible by the NCAA's blanket eligibility waiver. Moses made the announcement in an Instagram post. Moses is projected as a mid-round pick in April's draft. He joins four underclassmen who declared for the draft Thursday afternoon: quarterback Mac Jones, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, cornerback Patrick Surtain and defensive tackle Christian Barmore. Defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis announced Thursday he is staying in school. - Birmingham News

The Reese's Senior Bowl has added a big in-state name to the roster for 2021. Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl, which takes place Jan. 30 at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. Game officials made the announcement via Twitter on Thursday: The 6-foot-6, 312-pound Leatherwood, a Pensacola native, was a first-team All-American and won the Outland Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the country in 2020. A starter at left tackle in 2019 and 2020 after starting at right guard in 2018, he is projected as a likely first-round pick in April's NFL draft. - Birmingham News

Four stars from Alabama's national championship team, including Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Mac Jones, are leaving early to enter the NFL draft. Jones, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, cornerback Patrick Surtain II and defensive lineman Christian Barmore announced their intentions to leave on Thursday - all are considered potential first-round picks. Jones arrived as a skinny recruit along with much more heralded prospect Tua Tagovailoa, a No. 5 overall pick by the Miami Dolphins last season. Both played behind young quarterback Jalen Hurts, now with the Philadelphia Eagles. There also are several Alabama seniors considered first-round picks, including Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith, All-America tailback Najee Harris and Outland Trophy winner left tackle Alex Leatherwood. - AP College Football

Najee Harris scored three touchdowns in the Crimson Tide's 52-24 national championship game win Monday night over Ohio State, becoming the SEC's single-season record holder in total rushing and receiving touchdowns. With two rushing scores and one receiving, Harris totaled 30 for the season, passing Derrick Henry's 28 touchdowns in 2015 as the best mark in conference and school history. The running back finishes his four seasons with 57 total touchdowns - 46 rushing and 11 receiving - tying Tim Tebow's 57 as the most in a career by any SEC player in history. - Birmingham News

  01/13/21 - Landon DickersonrSr/2021, Alabama, 6-6, 333 (DS#2 C) + More +

When all eyes in Hard Rock Stadium were trained pregame Monday night on Jaylen Waddle's right ankle, out of the tunnel trotted a No. 69 in a crimson uniform. About an hour before kickoff of the national championship game, Landon Dickerson was not only wearing his game jersey, but was fully dressed and ready to play with all his usual athletic tape and braces. The only problem: Dickerson was only about three weeks removed from season-ending knee surgery.

The center had no chance of playing against Ohio State - or in any competitive football game for several months - but wanted to close his college career as more than a spectator. Dickerson had been carted off the field of the SEC championship game Dec. 19, marking the fourth time his five-year college career has been cut short by an injury. After three seasons at Florida State and two at Alabama, Monday night was his first opportunity to play in a championship game - and he was not going to miss it. - Birmingham News

  01/13/21 - *Jaylen WaddleJr/2021, Alabama, 5-10, 180 (DS#3 WR) + More +

Jaylen Waddle's labored trot on and off the field was obvious to everyone in Hard Rock Stadium on Monday night. Also evident was the junior wide receiver's desire to play in a national championship game less than three months after fracturing his ankle. Waddle caught three passes for 34 yards in Alabama's 52-24 win over Ohio State, playing a limited role for an offense that did not need its most explosive playmaker but welcomed his presence on the biggest stage of the season. "I have a lot of respect for Jaylen Waddle, his mental toughness and his ability to be able to come back," coach Nick Saban said Tuesday.

Waddle had not played since Oct. 24 but returned to practice last week. He went through about a 25-minute pregame warmup before giving coaches the go-ahead that he would play. That put into motion a plan that saw Waddle not start the game but enter late on the first drive of the game. On his first play, Waddle caught a pass over the middle from quarterback Mac Jones and turned downfield for a 15-yard gain. "We just had a limited plan for him," Saban said. "We really had, like, plays that he could run where he could run in a straight line and didn't have to do a lot of cutting, didn't have to do a lot of route running and changing direction, doing some of the things he's so good at, which is going in motion, running bubbles, orbits, all that kind of stuff. - Birmingham News

  01/13/21 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

It was almost the perfect ending for DeVonta Smith but a finger injury ended his final Alabama game early. The Heisman Trophy winner left with a dislocated finger on the second snap of the second half of Alabama's 52-24 win over Ohio State in the national championship game. "It was dislocated and they couldn't get it back in," Nick Saban said in the aftermath. "If they'd have got it back in, he would have been fine. He actually wanted to play, we just didn't allow him to." Smith was in the sideline injury tent for an extended period before walking back to the locker room.

ESPN cameras caught Smith under the stadium, walking between the locker room and other medical rooms after going down early in the second half. He later emerged on the sideline but no longer in uniform. Saban smiled when talking about the situation in the postgame. "I told Smitty after the game, I said, You're the only player that I know that missed a whole half because of your finger," Saban said - Birmingham News

Alabama finished the season No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the 12th time, extending its record by completing the program’s first perfect season since 2009. The Crimson Tide were a unanimous No. 1 in the final poll, getting 61 first-place votes, after beating Ohio State 52-24 in the College Football Playoff championship game Monday night. Alabama was the preseason No. 3, but when it started playing this strange season amid a pandemic in late September it moved up to No. 2. The Tide jumped to No. 1 in early November and finished as major college football's only undefeated team. - AP College Football

DeVonta Smith was uncoverable, Najee Harris unstoppable and Mac Jones impeccable. With a performance that was both surgical and explosive, No. 1 Alabama won the College Football Playoff national championship game 52-24 against No. 3 Ohio State on Monday night. The final game of a college football season in a pandemic, a season that was uncertain to be played in the summer and filled with disruptions in the fall, ended in the most predictable fashion: Alabama (13-0) as national champion for the sixth time in the last 12 years under coach Nick Saban.

For Saban, it was career title No. 7 overall, breaking a tie with Alabama great Paul "Bear" Bryant for the most by a major college coach. Ohio State (7-1) just couldn't keep up. Justin Fields, playing what might be his last game before heading to the NFL, passed for 194 yards and a touchdown. Whether Fields was 100% after taking a brutal hit to the side during his brilliant semifinal performance against Clemson was hard to know for sure. - Alabama/AP College Football

DeVonta Smith did not catch a single pass after halftime. He didn't have to, either. He'd done plenty. The Heisman Trophy-winning receiver from Alabama put his stamp all over the College Football Playoff championship game in the first two quarters, and the Crimson Tide are national champions once again. Smith had 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns - all those scores coming in the second quarter - to lead the Tide past Ohio State 52-24 on Monday night. He won everything there was to win this season: the national title, the Heisman, and became the first FBS player since Michael Crabtree in 2007 to lead the nation in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Next stop, the NFL. - AP College Football

Alabama's Heisman Trophy-winning receiver DeVonta Smith injured his right hand Monday night in the College Football Playoff national championship game. Smith went to the medical tent early in the third quarter after a huge first half against Ohio State. He was later taken to the locker room. Smith was hit trying to bring in a pass and appeared to jam his hand against a defender. ESPN reported his return was questionable. Smith made 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. He passed Vanderbilt's Jordan Matthews to become the Southeastern Conference's career leader in receiving yards. - AP College Football
