  07/22/22 - Jermaine BurtonSr/2024, Alabama, 6-0, 196 (DS#20 WR) + More +

The Crimson Tide last year, after all, welcomed a rival in Henry To'o To'o, previously of Tennessee, and Jameson Williams, fresh off a meeting playing for Ohio State in a national title game loss to Alabama. But the two-part Alabama-Georgia postseason series from last season was especially emotional and Burton made the move so soon after the 33-18 Bulldog win. Did anyone in the Crimson Tide locker room look at Burton sideways upon arrival? "We didn't have much reaction," Alabama safety Jordan Battle said Tuesday at SEC media days. "I mean, I'm pretty sure Georgia fans, Georgia people and the media out there have a reaction, but we welcomed him with open arms. He's doing great right now and I think he's going to be a big factor on the field. He's allowing us to compete in 7-on-7 every day. As a DB in the secondary, we love that addition."

And what about that Georgia national title ring? Has it been spotted in the Alabama complex? "I don't think so and probably think he never will around Alabama, of course," Battle said. "But I love Jermaine, of course. He's a great guy. I think he's a great addition to the team. Very explosive down the field. And I love competing against him in practice as well." Burton had two catches for 28 yards against Alabama in the national championship game after having a three-catch, 36-yard night in the SEC title game loss to the Tide. - Birmingham News

  07/22/22 - *Jahmyr GibbsJr/2023, Alabama, 5-09, 199 (DS#2 RB) + More +

Perhaps it's the Jameson Williams effect or maybe Jahmyr Gibbs is just that explosive. But the preseason chatter surrounding this transfer from Georgia Tech would indicate Alabama is expecting a breakout season from the speedy running back. And the Williams comparisons could extend to the big-play capability Gibbs brings not just to the running game but the passing game as well. Gibbs caught 60 passes in his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets that netted 773 yards with five touchdowns. Crimson Tide linebacker Will Anderson flashed a smile when asked about Gibbs on Tuesday. "He's like a little wide receiver sometimes," Anderson said. "When we have to take the wheel routes with him, you really have to get on your horse because he has wheels and he can run. He's dangerous out of the backfield but I love it. It's fun to watch."

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior from Dalton, Georgia averaged 5.2 yards a carry playing for a Georgia Tech program that went 6-16 in his two seasons there. Stepping into a primary role this spring, Gibbs was the A-Day MVP thanks mostly to a 75-yard touchdown run. Alabama safety Jordan Battle wasn't on the field for that sample of Gibbs' open-field speed. The secondary veteran, however, is well-acquainted with Gibbs as locker mates who recently traveled together. Their on-field meetings will benefit both down the line. But who wins more? "I think it's 50/50," Battle said. "I stood him up a couple of times. He got me a couple of times but that's the thing about Alabama. You're going to compete every day. You're going to be that competitor every day. You're going to make a play. You're going to miss a play. That's how you learn how to not miss that play in the game." - Birmingham News

  07/20/22 - *Eli RicksJr/2023, Alabama, 6-2, 190 (DS#23 CB) + More +

In breaking down his team Tuesday at SEC media days in Atlanta, Nick Saban isolated cornerback as a particular area of potential concern on the defense. "Defensively I think we've got seven starters back," Saban said of a group that returned several players, including safety Jordan Battle and linebacker Henry To'o To'o, for their senior seasons. "Again, the biggest challenge is how do we replace the corners that we lost, because corner is probably the one position that puts the greatest restriction on what you can do on defense. That's going to be a significant challenge for us, as well." Expectations might be highest for Ricks, who was a third-team Associated Press All-America pick as a freshman at LSU in 2020 before a shoulder injury prematurely ended his 2021 season. Saban noted at the beginning of Alabama spring practice how the shoulder injury affected Ricks' physical development and how he needed to gain back weight.

But by the spring game in mid-April, Ricks was part of the second team behind McKinstry and Jackson, who started the game with the first-team defense. Saban said after the game that Ricks was part of a three-way competition for a starting job but he needed to continue to learn the system, something Battle acknowledged Tuesday at media days. "He's fits in very well. Week in, week out, we can tell -- I mean, when he first got there, he had a problem with comfortability because the defense and the playbook but since he's been going up and seeing Coach T-Rob [Travaris Robinson], he's acclimated very quickly," Battle said. Saban's lone comments about Ricks at Tuesday's session were more pointed. "Eli Ricks is a guy that has started in this league," Saban said. "He has to, sort of, prove that he has a good understanding of what we want him to do, how we want him to do it and why it's important that way." - Birmingham News

The monumental shift that name, image and likeness laws brought to college athletics often came with more questions than answers. How does it really work? And how much money is circulating above the table with athletes now able to legally profit from their status? Nick Saban put a number to it at SEC media days Tuesday in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide football coach said Alabama players brought in $3 million in NIL money in the first year after the laws and rules changed. "I'm all for the players being able to do as well as they can and use name, image and likeness to be able to create value for themselves," Saban said. "We have a great brand at Alabama so their value is going to be enhanced because of the value our brand helped them create."

Saban previously said that number was made by 25 of the Alabama football players. And before the 2021 SEC media days, Saban told a group of high school football coaches in Texas that quarterback Bryce Young was already approaching the $1 million mark in NIL money before starting a game with the Tide. The money Alabama players made last year came before the state repealed its NIL law that prohibited the collectives that have become such a part of this shifting landscape. - Birmingham News

Alabama added four players on offense from the transfer portal, and Bryce Young is developing chemistry with the fresh faces. New transfers include offensive lineman Tyler Steen, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receivers Tyler Harrell and Jermaine Burton. Young said he is particularly excited about the addition of Gibbs, who earned three spots on the 2021 All-ACC team with Georgia Tech, to the running back mix. "(Gibbs) is super explosive, super dynamic, and he's really smart," Young said. "He understands the offense really well, even in the short time that he's been here." Young is also working with Burton, who caught 26 catches for 497 yards and five touchdowns for Georgia last season. "It's been a lot of timing that we developed," Young said. "A lot of chemistry (and) work that's going on, (and) it's only going to improve, so I'm really excited." - Montgomery Advertiser
