ESPN named Alabama football quarterback Bryce Young as a nominee for the best college athlete in men's sports for the 2022 ESPYS. Young won the 2021 Heisman Trophy, AP College Football Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award after throwing for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He helped the Crimson Tide win the SEC championship and make it to the College Football Playoff championship game. Young is one of four finalists. If there's any sign of Alabama's football talent level abating, it doesn't show in the 76th annual AL.com/Birmingham News SEC post-spring football report. The Crimson Tide placed 11 players on the preseason All-SEC teams, in voting by the league's 14 football information directors. Alabama put six players on the first team, with five on the second team. Leading the way is reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, who easily outdistanced the competition at quarterback. Guard Emil Ekiyor also landed on the first-team offense. Young, a junior from Pasadena, Calif., set Alabama program records for passing yards (4,872) and touchdown passes (47) in becoming the Crimson Tide's second straight Heisman winner (and first at quarterback). Even Georgia winning the national championship last season didn't keep Alabama from its seemingly annual perch atop the AL.com Preseason SEC football poll. The Crimson Tide was the pick by 11 of the SEC's 14 football information directors to win the league championship in 2022, in voting compiled by AL.com/The Birmingham News for the 76th straight year. Alabama - which, we must remember, beat Georgia for the SEC title last year before falling to the Bulldogs in the national championship game - is the preseason favorite in this poll for the 10th consecutive year.

Saban's Alabama machine is predicted to continue its historic championship run, getting named first on 11 ballots and second on the other two. That gives the Crimson Tide 167 points, ahead of Georgia's 158 (three first-place votes, nine seconds and one third). Points were awarded in reverse order of voting (13 for first, 12 for second, 11 for third...on down to one point for a 13th-place vote). Again, because voters were instructed to ignore their own teams, there were only 13 votes per ballot. Alabama returns the Heisman Trophy winner this year in quarterback Bryce Young, and arguably the country's most-dominant player in outside linebacker Will Anderson. As usual, the Crimson Tide's roster is populated with all-star candidates, from Young and guard Emil Ekiyor on the offensive side of the ball to Anderson, fellow linebacker Henry To'oTo'o and safety Jordan Battle on defense. - Birmingham News

A court in Mississippi has dismissed a marijuana charge against Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks. Ricks, a junior who transferred from LSU, was arrested May 1 by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and charged with possession of marijuana, not having insurance and speeding. A hearing in his case was scheduled for Thursday morning in Jones County Justice Court. A clerk for the court said Thursday afternoon that Ricks' possession of marijuana charge was dismissed and, through his attorney, Ricks pled guilty to the speeding ticket and received a fine.

A police report obtained by AL.com after Ricks' arrest showed he was stopped at 4:20 p.m. CT while traveling southbound on Interstate 59 near Laurel. Police noted Ricks was traveling 91 m.p.h. and was in possession of one gram of marijuana. Ricks was a five-star recruit from California in 2020 who was a third-team Associated Press All-America selection as a freshman. He underwent shoulder surgery midway through his sophomore season at LSU and announced in December he would transfer to Alabama. - Birmingham News

Bryce Young has had the look. His dad, Craig Young, knows it well. He's witnessed it before. Several times, in fact, throughout the Alabama football quarterback's life. And it's back this offseason. "I can see that look in his eyes where he's been so motivated," Craig said. It appeared whenever Young spent the duration of an offseason day throwing, working out and lifting. Not traveling or taking a bunch of time off. Just working. "I've seen that in him before," Craig said. "And I know what that means." Craig saw that in 2016, when his son aimed to beat out the incumbent upperclassman starter even though Young would be only a high school freshman.

The two quarterbacks ended up splitting time that year. Then there was 2019. After he threw 39 touchdowns as a junior en route to all-state recognition, Young pushed to get even better. He ended up throwing 58 touchdowns and rushing for 10 his senior year. The look appeared again in 2021 when Young strived to take advantage of the open Alabama quarterback spot. The Manning Passing Academy is set for this week, and the country's elite college quarterbacks will be attending, including Alabama's Bryce Young. The annual camp, which takes place at Nicholls State University, marks its 26th year will be conducted over a four-day span starting Thursday. A record 45 quarterbacks have been invited, including the Crimson Tide's Heisman Trophy winner. "It's a really good group," Archie Manning told NOLA.com. "I usually cut it off at 40 counselors, but we had so many guys that wanted to come this year that I couldn't say no. I'm getting to be a softie." Young leads a lengthy list of quarterback from the SEC. In fact, 12 quarterbacks from the league have been invited. - Birmingham News

Despite his consistent high level of production, questions have persisted about Alabama linebacker Henry To'o To'o's relative athleticism as an inside linebacker. While he brings to mind the hard-nosed tacklers of yore, To'o To'o has yet to consistently flash the coverage ability that modern football dictates from its linebackers. He took a step in the right direction with Alabama last season, though, and could easily continue to build on that. Alabama football edge defender Will Anderson Jr. enters the 2022 season coming off a sophomore year in which he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation's top defender. His focus is improving ahead of his junior season when he had 34.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks, both the most in the nation. Anderson has been working with new outside linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler, who spent 2021 as special teams coordinator at Ole Miss. Hutzler is also Alabama's special teams coordinator. "It's been good, he's full of energy," Anderson told the Tuscaloosa News at the Nike Football Skills Camp at Hillcrest High School. "He pumps the room up. He brings that younger feeling to the room a little bit more. He's like a fireball. He has so much energy, but it's been great.

"He knows a lot, but he's young. He's been doing a good job connecting with us, getting to know us, so it's been fun. I can't wait for the season to start." Alabama's defense returns nine starters from the College Football Playoff championship game. The Crimson Tide could have a top pass rusher at edge with Dallas Turner, who had 8.5 sacks in 2021, opposite of Anderson. After spring practice, Anderson trained more with his Alabama coaches instead of a pass rush specialist. "I've just been working on myself with my coaches, coach Holtzer and Sal Sunseri," Anderson said. The latest round of NCAA academic data shows Alabama athletes outperformed national benchmarks. The Monday release of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) revealed that 15 of the 19 Crimson Tide teams bettered the national average in their respective sports. Seven Alabama teams scored a perfect 1,000 in the multi-year APR rates ending with the 2020-21 season. And among football programs, the Crimson Tide had the third-highest score among FBS schools. Its 997 ranked behind only Clemson and Ole Miss, both of whom scored 999. That score will earn Nick Saban a $100,000 bonus since Alabama's score ranks in the top four among SEC football programs, according to his contract last updated in the summer of 2021. The 997 is the highest score for an Alabama football team since the APR was introduced in the 2004-05 academic year. - Birmingham News

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was named Tuesday as the state's amateur athlete of the year by the membership of the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Young edged Auburn gymnast Suni Lee for the award in voting that was described as "extremely close" by ASWA president Christopher Walsh. The other nominees for the award were Alabama softball pitcher Montana Fouts, Mississippi State outfielder Tanner Allen and Virginia swimmer Paige Madden. Allen, from Theodore, was SEC baseball player of the year in 2021 and helped lead MSU to a national title. Madden, another graduate of UMS-Wright Prep in Mobile, was MVP of the NCAA swimming championships. Voting for the annual award closed May 9. Young is the second consecutive winner from the University of Alabama, following DeVonta Smith last year. Both also won the Heisman Trophy, with Young last December becoming the Tide's first-ever quarterback winner. - Birmingham News

The ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2023 will be revealed at 10 a.m. CDT Monday, the National Football Foundation announced on Wednesday. The NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision portion of the 2023 ballot includes 80 players. Will any from Alabama be on it? There are plenty of choices to join the 21 former Crimson Tide stars already in the College Football Hall of Fame. Thirty-seven Alabama players are eligible for the ballot for the Class of 2023. That doesn't include 60 Crimson Tide alumni who meet the first standard for consideration for the College Football Hall of Fame but aren't in the current eligibility window. That's 97 players from Alabama with the possibility of becoming Hall of Famers.

To be considered for the College Football Hall of Fame today, a player must have been a first-team All-American selection by one of the organizations that the NCAA uses to compile its annual consensus All-American team. Currently, those organizations are the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of American, Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation. Alabama has 13 players who were unanimous All-Americans eligible for the 2023 ballot, including four who are eligible for inclusion for the first time this year - Mark Barron, Dee Milliner, Barrett Jones and Chance Warmack. - Birmingham News

The SEC is considering a change to its transfer rules this week at its annual spring meetings in Destin, Florida that would allow players greater freedom to move to another school within the conference. The change, which was proposed by the University of Alabama, would push the SEC's intra-conference transfer deadline for fall sports athletes back from February 1 to May 1. That would align it with the NCAA's deadline to enter the transfer portal and still maintain eligibility to play the upcoming season.

However, there might not be enough support for the proposal to be adopted. "I would guess that's going to stay where it is. I think you open up a long time that your players can go," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday. "Someone kind of joked, they're not going to put their spring game on TV, because you're saying, "Hey, here's our best players. Come get them." I think that is probably something that will stay, in my opinion. Doesn't mean that was everyone's opinion. But that's really difficult." South Carolina coach Shane Beamer thought the transfer rule worked out well last year but was willing to listen to both sides of the argument, including the belief that SEC players should be kept within the conference as much as possible. Alabama coach Nick Saban tried to put an end to his feud with Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher on Tuesday as Southeastern Conference leaders gathered for spring meetings at a resort on the Florida Gulf Coast. "I didn't really say that anybody did anything wrong," Saban said when asked if he had evidence that Texas A&M has been buying players with name, image and likeness compensation deals. "OK, and I've said everything I'm going to say about this. I should have never mentioned any individual institutions as I've said that before." Saban added: "I have no problem with Jimbo. I have no problem with Jimbo at all." Saban set off Fisher two weeks ago when he called out Texas A&M and other schools while talking about the need for NIL regulation in college sports.

Fisher responded angrily, saying Saban's comments were despicable and calling his former boss at LSU a "narcissist" while denying any wrongdoing with his program that landed the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for 2022. The SEC spring meetings - taking place in person for the first time since 2019 because of the pandemic -- were the first opportunity for the two superstar coaches to meet face-to-face since the dustup. Fisher was not scheduled to meet with reporters Tuesday. Georgia coach Kirby Smart downplayed the back and forth between Fisher and Saban. Smart worked under Saban for years, including a season at LSU when Fisher was Saban's offensive coordinator. Alabama, led by star quarterback Bryce Young, will visit Texas on Sept. 10 for the schools' first meeting since the 2009 BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl. The game, which will be televised by Fox, is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told Longhorns fans in Houston that he didn't care what time kickoff was going to be against Alabama. You can officially plan your first three Saturdays of the 2022 Alabama football season. The TV designations and kickoff times were announced for the Crimson Tide's first three games of the season, as well as the kickoff time for Austin Peay on Nov. 19. Alabama will begin the season facing Utah State at home, the first home opener for Nick Saban's squad since the 2011 season. The Crimson Tide will face the Aggies at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network. Then in the second week, Alabama will travel to Austin, Texas, to face former offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns. The game will be broadcast at 11 a.m. on Sept. 10 on Fox. The Crimson Tide will then return home for its final game before SEC play begins.
