  Pro Football Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed won't be the next football coach at Bethune-Cookman. The Ed Reed Foundation announced on social media Saturday that the university declined to ratify Reed's contract and "won't make good on the agreement we had in principle, which had provisions and resources best needed to support the student athletes." The decision comes less than a week after Reed ripped the school in a profanity-laced social media post that went viral. He accused Bethune-Cookman of having a dirty campus and failing to clean his office before he arrived. He threatened to leave then, saying he was having to "clear out trash" while not even being under contract.

Reed apologized the following day for "my lack of professionalism." "My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach and leader," he wrote in a social media post. "My passion for our culture, betterment and bringing our foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well." Now, Reed and the Wildcats are parting ways before they really even got started. "I was committed to coaching and cultivating a relationships with the University, Players, Community and the Fans," the statement said Saturday. "It's extremely disappointing this won't be happening." Reed's foundation affirmed its commitment to helping kids and "changing lives for the better, as we've done for 20 years." Reed played at Miami and spent the past three years in an administrative role with the Hurricanes, first as chief of staff under former coach Manny Diaz for two years and this past year as a senior advisor under coach Mario Cristobal.   A University of Miami legend is leaving the U as its "Chief of Staff" to join Bethune-Cookman as its new football coach. "Bethune-Cookman University has entered an agreement in principle with Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed to be its 16th head football coach," Bethune-Cookman Athletics posted on Twitter Tuesday night. "We are excited to hear that Ed Reed has been named the head football coach at Bethune-Cookman," UM athletic director Dan Radakovich told the Miami Herald in a text message.

"Ed is one of the best to ever wear a Miami Hurricanes uniform and he has served as a great mentor to our student-athletes the past three years. "He will do a tremendous job leading the Wildcats program and the entire Miami family wishes him all the best." Reed replaces former Bethune-Cookman coach Terry Sims, who was fired in November. Bethune-Cookman, 2-9 in 2022, plays in the Southwest Athletic Conference of the FCS, the same conference as Jackson State, where Deion Sanders just resigned to take the head job at Colorado. So another, ah, prime example of a HOF player entering college coaching at an HBCU team. Do we see a trend here?   Darnell Deas returned a second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and QueShaun Byrd added a 26-yard touchdown run in the final minute as Bethune-Cookman held off winless Mississippi Valley State, 45-35 in a Southwestern Conference East Division game on Saturday night. The Delta Devils scored on their first offensive play, but Omari Hill-Robinson scored on a 97-yard pick-six and the Wildcats took the lead for good when Terry Lindsey capped an 87-yard drive with a nine-yard run. Byrd had 116 yards on 17 carries and Jalon Jones had 127 on 15 carries to lead Bethune-Cookman (2-5, 2-2). Jones also had 274 yards on 18-for-30 passing. Jamari Jones led Mississippi Valley State (0-5, 0-8), throwing for 218 yard yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions and running for 129 yards on 16 carries. - Bethune-Cookman/AP College Football

  SEPT 26 SWAC FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bethune-Cookman's Darnell Deas made an impact during Bethune-Cookman's 36-19 win over Grambling State finding the end zone twice during the contest. He scored midway through the first quarter on an explosive 97-yard kick return to put the Wildcats up 14-7. Deas capped off the B-CU victory with an interception return for a score with under a minute to play in the contest. He totaled 127 return yards during the game. - SWAC Football

  Cornerback Darnell Deas scored two touchdowns, Que'shaun Byrd had 162 yards rushing, and Bethune-Cookman defeated Grambling 36-19 in SWAC opener on Saturday. After Grambling tied the score at 7 in the first quarter, Bethune-Cookman's Jimmie Robinson fielded the kickoff inside the 5-yard line and pitched to Deas who took it up the sideline for a 97-yard score. Deas' 37-yard interception return capped the scoring in the final minute. The Wildcats (1-2) won despite managing only 14 first downs and being outgained 441-336. They were 1-for-10 on third down. Still, Jalon Jones was 13-of-18 passing for 137 yards with two touchdowns and the Wildcats had 199 yards rushing. Grambling (1-3) led 19-17 at halftime but was shut out in the second half.   Shannon Patrick threw for a pair of touchdowns and Bethune-Cookman rallied in the second half to beat Alcorn State 35-31 on Saturday for its first win of the season. The Wildcats (1-8, 1-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hadn't recorded a win since Nov. 23, 2019 when they beat Florida A&M 31-27 at home. Down 17-7 at halftime, Bethune-Cookman took the lead for good when LaDerrien Wilson crashed in from the 3-yard line for a 35-31 advantage early in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats looked to add to the lead but Que'shaun Byrd was stripped of the ball deep in Alcorn State territory and the Braves recovered. Bethune-Cookman's defense stiffened and held Alcorn State (5-4, 4-2) to 12 yards in seven plays and forced a punt with 5:17 left. The Wildcats nursed the clock to end it.
