South Carolina Football   He's always had to turn others' views of him into reality. Coach Brian Smith knew that Darius Rush was a standout athlete, even if Rush didn't really know all of the plays he was supposed to run, which is why Rush started on the C.E. Murray varsity as a freshman. Rush was put in at quarterback on the 1-yard line and told to run an option play, with the best choice to tuck the ball and try to bull forward for a few yards. He sprinted 99 yards for a touchdown. Chad Wilkes knew he didn't inherit a great team at Murray when he took over for Smith, but he also knew he had Rush, a dynamic receiver. A first view of Rush made Wilkes think, "Man, I really think he could be a great, great corner!" Rush dabbled at corner. C.E. Murray reached the Lower State championship game.

Rush came to South Carolina as an athlete/receiver, but wasn't getting on the field. He was asked if he wanted to switch to defensive back. Swallowing the hurt of knowing that if he said no, he was still never going to play receiver, Rush said sure. He started 21 of his 43 career games, was an inspiring sight last season as he filled in for an injury-riddled secondary, and intercepted two of his nine broken-up passes. Going to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., he was one of dozens of players trying to get one last shot at impressing an NFL scout. Rush was named his team's Cornerback Practice Player of the Week, which is voted on by the team's receivers. - The Post and Courier

Michigan Football   Michigan has won back-to-back Joe Moore Awards given to the nation's top offensive line and got a huge boost last season from the transfer portal when Olu Oluwatimi arrived from Virginia and went on to win the Rimington Award as the nation's top center and the Outland as the top interior lineman. The line helped Michigan's run game rank No. 5 nationally in rushing last season averaging 238.9 yards a game, and several starters from that line return - guards Trevor Keegan and Zak Zinter, who both strongly considered leaving for the NFL, and right tackles Karsen Barnhart and Trente Jones, who both made starts.

Michigan went to the portal again and added experience in LaDarius Henderson (Arizona State), who likely will replace Ryan Hayes at left tackle; Drake Nugent (Stanford), who is penciled in at center; and Myles Hinton, also from Stanford. They will get significant work in the spring as they adjust to the offense and expect the backups to also get plenty of reps, while Keegan, Zinter, Barnhart and Jones use the time to hone their skills. This will be the first spring that offensive line coach Sherrone Moore will be the offensive coordinator after spend the last two seasons as co-coordinator. - Detroit News

Oregon Football   The Lane County District Attorney's office will not be filing charges against former Oregon Ducks receiver Traeshon Holden, according to his attorney. Holden was dismissed from the UO football team following his Wednesday morning arrest by Eugene police on accusations of felony unlawful use of a weapon and coercion and misdemeanor menacing.

The Lane County District Attorney's office told KEZI it reviewed body camera footage and video surveillance and interviewed an additional witness and will not be filing charges against Holden. "Traeshon Holden did nothing wrong," Jacob Houze, his attorney, said in a statement. "The Lane County District Attorney's thorough review of the evidence has confirmed that. Now that he has been exonerated, he deserves to have his good name back." The Lane County District Attorney's office could not be reached Friday night and district attorney Patricia Perlow did not immediately respond to an email from The Oregonian/OregonLive. - The Oregonian

Rutgers Football   As a former four-star recruit and transfer from Texas A&M, Jahzion Harris arrived at Rutgers with plenty of potential. Due to an undisclosed medical condition, that potential will go unseen. Harris, a defensive lineman from Erasmus Hall High School and native of Staten Island, will retire from football but remain a student at Rutgers, a team official said Friday. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound edge rusher had four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting his freshman season in College Station and transferring to Rutgers without ever playing a snap for the Scarlet Knights. Harris originally signed with Texas A&M from a final five that included Rutgers, Michigan, LSU and Ohio State. - Star Ledger

North Texas Football   UNT returns several defensive linemen who contributed in 2022 and could take another step forward next season. Vailea posted 44 tackles last season, when Brown added 40 tackles and 4.0 sacks. Johnson finished with 3.5 sacks. Each of those players should benefit from an additional year in UNT's strength and conditioning program. UNT needs those players to make a significant jump as it prepares to move from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. The challenge for most programs that move to a higher-level league is competing in the trenches. - Denton Record

Michigan Football   The defense lost edge-rush production with the departure of Mike Morris, the Big Ten's Defensive Lineman of the Year last season, who had 7.5 sacks and is preparing for the NFL Draft. Also gone are Taylor Upshaw and Eyabi Okie, but the Wolverines have returning talent at that spot as well as the addition of Coastal Carolina transfer Josaiah Stewart, who had 79 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, 16 sacks and four forced fumbles during his career there. Spring will offer plenty of opportunity for returning edge rushers Jaylen Harrell, Braiden McGregor and Derrick Moore. Harrell had 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, McGregor had five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks and Moore had two sacks. - Detroit News

Texas Christian Football   TCU's offensive line was a main component in the Horned Frogs championship run in 2023. The unit stayed healthy and produced consistent results, allowing head coach Sonny Dykes and Co. to succeed through the air and on the ground. The Frogs' top two offensive lineman, however, are heading to the NFL draft: Alan Ali and Steve Avila. Both were named First Team All-Big 12 members for their efforts protecting quarterback Max Duggan and paving the way for running back Kendre Miller.

With offensive lineman Brandon Coleman, Garrett Hayes and Andrew Coker returning, the Frogs have solid depth. What they don't have, however, is a top talent similar to Avila or Ali. Can Alabama transfer Tommy Brockermeyer be dominant for the Frogs out of the gates? Brockermeyer, a 247Sports five star recruit out of All Saints Episcopal High School, didn't receive consistent opportunity at Alabama, playing two games in 2022 as a backup after redshirting in 2021. Brockermeyer was the Dallas Morning News' No. 1 recruit in the Dallas area in 2021. Now that Brockermeyer is back in his home state of Texas, he may have an opportunity to showcase his skills and gain collegiate experience. - Dallas Morning News

Auburn Football   Auburn's success in the tight end room during the 2023 season will depend upon how the group under new position coach Ben Aigamaua can replace John Samuel Shenker. The former team captain graduated with 718 yards, 68 catches, and one touchdown over three seasons for the Tigers. Shenker was a trusted security blanket as the program transitioned from Bo Nix at quarterback to T.J. Finley and Robby Ashford. With the quarterback position still in flux, it'd help immensely if the Tigers have a sound tight end that can catch passes and provide blocking.

The Tigers may have the answer with former Florida International University tight end Rivaldo Fairweather joining the squad. Fairweather had 54 receptions for 838 yards and five touchdowns in three seasons. He caught 28 passes for 426 yards and three touchdowns last season. Fairweather is a talented athlete at 6?5 and 245 pounds. He's speedy enough to beat linebackers and safeties while being difficult for smaller corners to tackle. He brings an added dimension of running routes at any distance. Fairweather living up to expectations will be crucial for the Tigers to succeed under new head coach Hugh Freeze and offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Aigamaua told reporters earlier in February that Fairweather is an example of the tight end he wants at Auburn. - Birmingham News

Missouri State Football   Drew Shelton was asked last week if there's a defensive lineman on Penn State's roster - someone from his 2022 recruiting class or maybe a year or two older - that has impressed him since the summer. The offensive tackle didn't hesitate. "Obviously you guys know about Dani," Shelton said of Dani Dennis-Sutton, the five-star edge rusher who played in all 13 games, logged three sacks and was named an ESPN true freshman All-American. "We battle every day. It's always a fight." Then, Shelton paused briefly before offering another, more surprising name. "I also have to say Davon Townley," Shelton said. Ears perked up around Shelton's roundtable during last week's media availability with the 2022 first-year players. That's because Townley almost left Penn State.

Townley entered the transfer portal in early December. After two seasons with the Nittany Lions - redshirting in 2021 and making three tackles in seven games in 2022 - the former four-star defensive end decided to seek out a new opportunity. Over the next few weeks, Townley was a free agent. Within a couple days of entering the portal, he fielded offers from South Florida, Houston and Colorado. They saw what Penn State, Kentucky, Oregon and a host of Power Five programs saw in the 2021 recruiting cycle: a raw but rangy 6-foot-6 pass rusher with potential. But Townley wasn't lured to Boulder by Deion Sanders. He wasn't wooed by Houston or South Florida. On Jan. 13, a few days before the portal closed to new FBS entrants, Townley confirmed to 247 Sports that he was returning to Penn State. - Tribune Review

Louisville Football   Hurricanes running back Don Chaney Jr. was involved in a serious car crash near the University of Miami campus on Thursday night, according to multiple reports. Another driver made a left turn in front of Chaney's car, and they collided, according to a report by Andy Slater. A Hurricanes spokesperson has not responded to requests for comment or confirmation. A University of Miami Police Department spokesperson referred the Sun Sentinel to the Coral Gables Police Department, which has not responded to a request for information. Chaney, who has played three seasons with Miami, was reportedly not severely hurt in the crash. Two women were struck by one of the cars, according to a report by the Miami Hurricane, the UM student newspaper. - Sun Sentinel

Alabama Football   Two more of Alabama's seniors from its 2022 roster will return for another season in 2023. Offensive lineman Darrian Dalcourt and defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe were both listed Tuesday on the school's updated roster for the spring. Dalcourt is listed as a graduate student because he never redshirted and is using the NCAA's COVID-19 waiver for the 2020 season to retain eligibility for 2023.

Eboigbe is listed as a redshirt senior. After playing extensively over his first three seasons, Eboigbe's 2022 season was cut short after four games because of a neck injury, allowing him to redshirt. The return of both players had been expected after neither announced plans to enter the NFL draft. Dalcourt was honored on senior day in November but Eboigbe, also a senior last season, was not part of the ceremony. - Birmingham News

Auburn Football   Replacing star runningback Tank Bigsby is a complex ask for offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Bigbsy had 973 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, leaving the Plains for the 2023 National Football League Draft seventh on the Tigers' rushing yard list with 2,903 yards. Bigsby was a reliable three-year starter and leading rusher. Jarquez Hunter returns to Auburn after posting seven touchdowns and 673 yards last season. Hunter finished the season going over 100 yards in each of Auburn's final three games. He ran for 134 yards in the Iron Bowl loss against Alabama.

Hunter ran for 109 yards on 13 carries in the win against Western Kentucky. He also ran for 114 yards in the emotional win for the Tigers in Carnell Williams' first victory as interim head coach at Jordan-Hare. If Hunter is ready to elevate into a starring role, it will bode well for the Auburn offense seeking to bounce back from a losing season. Hunter has the tools to be the next elite back in the Tigers' esteemed history of running backs. Auburn will count on him to show it each week in the SEC. - Birmingham News

Michigan State Football   Receiver Alante Brown and offensive lineman Hunter Anthony are not listed on the team's online roster after both saw steady roles in 2022. Brown collected the third most catches (16) among NU wideouts last season while piling up 191 receiving yards across 12 games. Anthony, who transferred from Oklahoma State a year ago, appeared in 11 contests along the O-line and special teams while starting at right tackle against Purdue.

Anthony has played five college seasons and earned his degree last year. Brown - a former quarterback from Chicago who went to prep school for a fall at St. Thomas More in Connecticut - joined the Huskers in the 2020 class and served as a return man for kickoffs while growing into a larger role on offense. He made 22 career receptions for 262 yards in 30 games (11 starts). Brown's departure leaves senior Marcus Washington (31 catches for 471 yards) as the only receiver on the roster who had a feature role at Nebraska last year. - Lincoln Journal Star

Navy Football   Vincent Terrell Jr., who started nine of 12 games in 2022, is currently not listed on the Navy football roster. Scott Strasemeier, senior associate athletic director for sports information, said the junior from Hawaii has been suspended indefinitely. Terrell was suspended from the football team by newly hired coach Brian Newberry for "failure to meet his responsibilities as a Midshipman," Strasemeier said. He provided no further details and said Terrell remains at the Naval Academy.

Terrell's suspension comes on the heels of Maquel Haywood, Navy's other starting slotback, entering the transfer portal. Haywood, who enjoyed a spectacular sophomore season, signed with Appalachian State. Terrell ranked sixth on the squad with 238 rushing yards and third with 221 receiving yards. He scored four total touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) and was third on the team with 533 all-purpose yards. - Capital Times
