He's always had to turn others' views of him into reality. Coach Brian Smith knew that Darius Rush was a standout athlete, even if Rush didn't really know all of the plays he was supposed to run, which is why Rush started on the C.E. Murray varsity as a freshman. Rush was put in at quarterback on the 1-yard line and told to run an option play, with the best choice to tuck the ball and try to bull forward for a few yards. He sprinted 99 yards for a touchdown. Chad Wilkes knew he didn't inherit a great team at Murray when he took over for Smith, but he also knew he had Rush, a dynamic receiver. A first view of Rush made Wilkes think, "Man, I really think he could be a great, great corner!" Rush dabbled at corner. C.E. Murray reached the Lower State championship game.

Rush came to South Carolina as an athlete/receiver, but wasn't getting on the field. He was asked if he wanted to switch to defensive back. Swallowing the hurt of knowing that if he said no, he was still never going to play receiver, Rush said sure. He started 21 of his 43 career games, was an inspiring sight last season as he filled in for an injury-riddled secondary, and intercepted two of his nine broken-up passes. Going to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., he was one of dozens of players trying to get one last shot at impressing an NFL scout. Rush was named his team's Cornerback Practice Player of the Week, which is voted on by the team's receivers. - The Post and Courier
