Following a breakout season in 2019, Alex Fontenot was looking forward last fall to picking up where he left off. Instead, a hip injury kept Fontenot on the sidelines last season, but the Colorado junior is back this spring and ready to compete. "To me, it felt good," he said after going through CU's first practice of spring on Monday. "Obviously, a little rusty, but that's nothing that practice can't fix for me." Fontenot, listed at 6-feet, 205 pounds, had not practiced since injuring his hip in Octobe r, early in CU's COVID-19 delayed preseason camp, and he hasn't played a game since Nov. 30, 2019, at Utah, but was ready to roll on Monday. "He's back and it's good to see him at practice," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. "He feels good. He doesn't loo k like he's favoring anything. He's making good cuts; he's vertically getting push up the field; he's running strong through the line of scrimmage from what I saw today, so I think he's over the hump. It's good to have him back." Fontenot, who led the Bu ffs with 874 rushing yards in 2019, said he's felt 100 percent healthy for months. As spring practice at the University of Utah hits the midway point this week, the running back room finds itself in a similar position compared to a year ago at this time. Last spring, the room was crowded, with Devin Brumfield, Jordan Wilmore, TJ Green and Micah Bernard all vying for carries, and that was before intriguing three-star recruit Ty Jordan was due to arrive on campus last summer. Most of those names have changed, but the situation within the position group has not. Bernard is now joined by two Power Five transfers in Oklahoma's T.J. Pledger and LSU's Chris Curry this spring, while four-star recruit Ricky Parks is due on campus this summer."As of now, a very similar situation as last year going into fall camp, with the three guys tha t we've got at the top of the chart now, then adding Ricky Parks, but that could change," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "We've still got nine practices left this spring. As it sits right now, I think that's the best bet, that it will be a four-guy co mpetition." When Power Five-level transfers show up at a new home, they are understandably going to get a lot of attention. Curry, a redshirt sophomore, was on LSU's vaunted 2019 national championship-winning team, which featured Heisman Trophy-winning q uarterback Joe Burrow. The path to this spring couldn't have been less predictable for Avery Davis. When he signed with Notre Dame as a quarterback out of Cedar Hill (Texas) High in 2017, he didn't imagine he would be the most experienced wide receiver on the Irish roster head ing into the 2021 season. "I never would have predicted that, especially coming in 2017," Davis said. "If someone would have told me that, I would have told them they were foolish." Not only has Davis played in more games (31) than any other skill player on the Irish offense, he has more career receptions (38) than the next two wide receivers behind him: seniors-to-be Braden Lenzy (18) and Lawrence Keys III (17). But a former three-star quarterback switching positions isn't unheard of in college footbal l. Redshirt freshman Graham Mertz struggled to find consistent rhythm after a record-setting performance in his starting debut. Mertz completed just under 57% of his passes, threw four touchdowns and five interceptions the rest of the season after completin g 20 of 21 passes against Illinois, tying a program record with five touchdowns. Cutting down on turnovers - Mertz also lost two fumbles last season - is the first step, but doing so will be the result of establishing better timing in the pocket. A major ity of Mertz's interceptions last seasons were due to holding the ball too long or trying to throw a pass too late and the window of opportunity closing. Coach Paul Chryst's track record of coaching quarterbacks at UW includes the heights of Russell Wils on's stellar season in 2011 and a through line of consistent, smart play. Spring practices are the time to meld that coaching with Mertz's talent so the quarterback can take a big step forward this fall. - Wisconsin State Journal

Dylan Moses' return from a major knee injury in 2019 apparently involved another one in 2020. Speaking to reporters Monday as part of Alabama's second NFL pro day, Moses said he had surgery Feb. 9 to repair a torn meniscus. "It happened, I believe, in th e third game of the season," Moses said, which would have been the high-scoring game at Ole Miss. "That's when I really started feeling it. It was said it was a bone bruise but it kept bothering me throughout the year and I just never really spoke up abo ut it. I'm the type of person that, if I'm in pain or something, I never want to leave the field so I just didn't say anything about it."Moses started all 13 games of his senior season and led the team in tackles with 80. Nick Saban spoke later Mo nday and referred any questions about Moses' knee to team doctor Lyle Cain. "I don't know if he had a torn meniscus," Saban said. "You can talk to the doctor about that. I know he had issues with his knee. We drained his knee a few times. Dr. Cain made a ll the decisions about how we should manage him through the season. Dylan was very aware of it and I do think it affected his performance a little bit." - Birmingham News

There have been some awkward moments at the NFL Draft when players invited to the event had extended stays in the green room waiting for their name to be called. Former Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley is confident he won't join that list. Farley ac cepted an invite to this year's draft earlier in the week within days of having back surgery. The defender's latest injury setback prevented him from working out in front of scouts in Blacksburg at Tech's pro day. It was supposed to be a big moment for F arley since he opted out last fall. He anticipated wowing scouts with his testing numbers (particularly in the 40-yard dash) and lessening doubts about his football readiness in the position drills. He was a spectator on Friday instead, but that didn't i mpact the cornerback's confidence. "If a team wants the best corner in the draft they will come and find me," Farley said. - Roanoke Times

Illinois running back Mike Epstein currently isn't on the University of Illinois campus, Illini coach Bret Bielema said Wednesday afternoon, and the senior's future with the Illini presently is unclear. Bielema also added linebacker Jake Hansen and offen sive lineman Alex Palczewski aren't going through spring ball. Hansen, a second-team All-Big Ten linebacker last season, announced earlier this month he would return to Illinois for a sixth season instead of pursuing the NFL draft. Palczewski is recoveri ng after offseason knee surgery to repair a torn ACL.But unlike Hansen or Palczewski Epstein isn't in Illinois at the moment. "I've had several conversations with Mike. Mike's back in Florida taking classes," Bielema said of the Fort Lauderdale, F la., native. "Just trying to steer him as best as possible. Whether or not he returns in the fall is strictly in his hands. I've invited him back and told him we'd love to have him be a part of the team. "It's just not my position to comment on it at all , so (I) put it in his hands on what he wants to do." Nobody on the UCF roster is more excited to be back on the football field this spring than Kalia Davis. The redshirt junior defensive tackle is back with the Knights after opting out of last season with concerns about the coronavirus pandemic and its eff ect on the football season. He was one of 10 players on the team who chose to opt out and put their football careers on hold. "Around the time I decided to opt out, there was a lot of stuff up in the air - the Big Ten canceling the season and the season was up in the air," said Davis, who appeared in 21 games in two seasons. "I took a few days to talk with my family, and talking with my mom, she helped me make a decision that was best for me. "At the end of the day, I'm happy to be back and ready to wor k." Not being around his teammates was difficult for Davis, who followed UCF's exploits navigating a difficult 6-4 campaign. "I watched every game. I couldn't miss a game. If I was out doing something, I made sure I had a subscription to whatever TV chan nel the game was on," Davis said. "It sucked just watching the games on Saturday, I should have been out there with them." - Orlando Sentinel

Honas' return to use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA puts him in a unique position. He's a junior college player who now will log four seasons at a Division I college, too. Honas has steadily grown into a regular for the Huskers. He suf fered a knee injury in 2018, played better late in the season in 2019 as he got back to fully healthy and then took another step forward in 2020. He's the bridge to a wave of young players, and he'll be looked to as the leader in Ruud's group this fall. Honas' return helped fortify what could end up being a deep group for the Huskers. Reimer burst onto the scene in 2020 and Ruud said the Lincoln North Star graduate's challenge is to be one of the best in the Big Ten. Henrich has moved between inside and outside, but settled in and played the best of his young career late in the season inside. Then there's Kolarevic, a graduate transfer from Northern Iowa who has two years of eligibility remaining and arrived on campus in January. - Lincoln Journal Star

Boise State will be without one of its top cornerbacks this spring as the Broncos search for replacements for starters Jalen Walker and Avery Williams. Junior Markel Reed said Friday that he will miss the spring after having surgery in January to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, but he expects to be healthy in time for fall camp. "I'm watching the guys compete every single day," Reed told reporters on Friday. "They have their heads on right, they're grinding it out and it's a different vibe around here right now." Reed said he injured his shoulder during his freshman season in 2019 but played through it that year - appearing in 11 games - and again last season when he appeared in all seven games and finished with a career-high 16 tackles. The timi ng of the injury isn't ideal for the Broncos, who are lacking in experienced cornerbacks. It's been a little more than two months since Alabama's last football game and a few injuries remain unhealed. Opening spring practice Friday, Nick Saban rattled off a list of players who were hurt and would likely miss the 15 practices of March and Apri l. He also had an update on running back Trey Sanders who's battling back from injuries suffered in a November car wreck. The injured list included starters like defensive back Malachi Moore, receiver John Metchie, defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis, gua rd Emil Ekiyor and second-year offensive lineman Pierce Quick will be out, Saban said. Former Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts decided at the end of his fourth year of starting in Statesboro that it was time for change. Werts knew that if he was to have a better chance at a job in the NFL, he needed to switch positions. The Louisvil le Cardinals sat at the ready to pluck him from the transfer portal, led by wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer, who had been waiting to coach Werts since 2016, when Brewer was in the same position at North Carolina. "I had the pleasure of recruiting him at North Carolina, along with a lot of other Power Five and ACC schools that wanted him to play receiver at that time," Brewer said. "He wanted to live the dream playing quarterback, and I don't blame him, went to a place that really fit him well." Brewer was full of praise for Werts' work ethic and knowledge of the game, saying he was a great fit for the Cardinals. Werts made good as a quarterback at GS, guiding the Eagles to three bowl games and earning MVP awards in the 2018 Camellia Bowl vict ory against Eastern Michigan and in the 2020 New Orleans Bowl win over Louisiana Tech. Werts finished his GS career with 3,777 yards passing, 3,083 rushing and 68 total touchdowns in the Eagles' run-first option offense. - Savannah Morning News

The University of Utah quarterbacks room is undergoing a radical shift with Power Five transfers Charlie Brewer and Ja'Quinden Jackson entering the fray, but Cameron Rising is the incumbent.The redshirt sophomore won the starting job last season, out-due ling Jake Bentley late in fall camp to get the nod in the Nov. 21 season-opener vs. USC. Rising lasted all of 14 offensive snaps, though, suffering a season-ending shoulder injury while trying to recover his own fumble. Rising underwent surgery to repair the shoulder injury and continues to go through rehabilitation as spring practice begins to unfold without him. Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham has ruled Rising out for the spring, so he has no choice but to continue rehab, not to mention wait for his turn to come back around. - Salt Lake Tribune
