When Florida State coach Mike Norvell began retooling the Seminoles' roster over the past few seasons, he was looking to add necessary experience and leadership to an otherwise young and raw group of players. Norvell achieved that by adding more than two dozen players through the transfer market. Their presence gave the team a lift, specifically through the performances of players such as Jermaine Johnson II, Keir Thomas, Jashaun Corbin and Devontay Love-Taylor. As the play improved, so did the team's c onfidence - a noticeable improvement coming out of FSU's spring camp last month."You saw confidence because guys understood the expectation," said Norvell. "We were able to push harder, and it wasn't all new for them." The quarterback group showed the most significant growth, with redshirt junior Jordan Travis returning as FSU's starter. After on-again, off-again seasons, Travis also assumes a more prominent leadership role for the Seminoles. "It's probably one of the biggest differences within o ur program," said Norvell. "Jordan is an incredible young man, but we had yet to see that confidence because there had not been that consistency of him being the guy, being able to go out there and consistently showcase what he could do. We got a glimpse of that last year and you watch how he responded in challenging situations." - Orlando Sentinel

Tech got an early start to life without James Mitchell after he went down with a season-ending injury in Week 2. Gallo and DeIuliis handled an expanded role well, with Gallo getting most of the opportunities in the passing game that went to Mitchell. Thi s year will probably go the same way. Tech's new staff really likes what Gallo brings to the table and he took home the offense's most improved player award for the spring. He had 14 catches for 130 yards last year - it was his second straight season wit h double-digit receptions - and fans should expect to see those numbers go up this fall. DeIuliis coming back for a sixth season gives the Hokies time to develop a tight end room that now features three true freshmen. - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has high hopes for wide receiver Justyn Ross after the former Tiger was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. "I mean, he might be the greatest free agent ever if he stays healthy," Swinney said Wedn esday of Ross. The caveat of health is what caused Ross to go from a potential first- or second-round pick to not hearing his name called at all during the 2022 NFL Draft. That's not supposed to happen after the ad Swinney said only four teams medically cleared Ross, one of which was the Chiefs. That created an even smaller pool from which to get drafted but provided the Alabama native a better understanding of how his path to the NFL would have to be carved. In addition to the congenital fusion i n his spine, the wideout missed the last three games of his final season at Clemson with a foot injury. Ross reportedly chose the Chiefs because of coach Andy Reid and getting to play with a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes. It also doesn't hurt that a f ormer Tiger in Sammy Watkins played in Reid's system in 2018-20. - The State

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Tyree Wilson started all 13 games at defensive end last season, and led the team with seven sacks and 13 1/2 tackles for loss. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Wilson will now get a standing start as an outside linebacker. New c oach Joey McGuire said Wilson will be on the edge more, giving the Red Raiders a chance to best utilize his speed and pass-rushing abilities. - AP College Football

WR Bru McCoy's most likely last opportunity to prove himself hangs in the balance with Tennessee as the Vols hold out hope he can still become the player so many were convinced he would be. Here is his travel log: After Initially signing with Tom Herman and The University of Texas in 2019, McCoy, a one-time sure fire recruit from SoCal's Mater Dei High school, entered the transfer portal deciding to return closer to home and enroll at USC under Clay Helton to begin his collegiate career. After a product ive redshirt freshman season in Los Angeles, McCoy appeared poised to live up to the hype entering his sophomore year but did not play a snap at USC during the 2021 season after he was arrested in July on suspicion of domestic violence.Although th e Los Angeles District Attorney's office did not file criminal charges against McCoy, USC decided not to reinstate the former five-star after concluding their own Title IX investigation before the beginning of last season. Now McCoy is set to join his th ird program in four years, aiming to rejuvenate a once promising career alongside Josh Heupel and his high powered Rocky Top offense. After losing Velus Jones and JaVonta Payton to the NFL, the Vols will have to replace over 1,200 yards and 13 TDs from l ast season, paving the way for a dynamic perimeter option like McCoy to excel. - 247 Sports/LA Times

In the past three NFL drafts, there have been two Utah quarterbacks who were first-round draft picks: Utah State's Jordan Love in 2020 and BYU's Zach Wilson in 2021. Could it happen again next year? Last year, Rising took over as starting quarterback mid way through the Utes' third game and led Utah to a 10-4 record, the school's first Pac-12 football championship and the program's first appearance in the Rose Bowl. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound transfer from Texas threw for 2,493 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions last season, while also rushing for 499 yards and six touchdowns. - Deseret News

IU's quarterbacks combined to throw 15 interceptions in 12 games, the most by any team in the Big Ten. With Penix transferring to Washington, IU will enter fall camp with the starting quarterback job still up in the air. "The competition ahead for that p osition, that really excites me, and I'm anxious to see these guys," Allen said. "They've been working extremely hard. So, yeah, it's a full room, a competitive room. Excited to see how it's going to make each other better."Jack Tuttle and Missour i transfer Connor Bazelak are two favorites to win the job, based on their experience. Tuttle went 0-2 last season as a starter, passing for 423 yards with two TDs and five interceptions. Bazelak possesses a strong arm and an ability to make plays downfi eld, but like Tuttle, needs to cut down on mistakes. Last season at Missouri, Bazelak passed for 2,548 yards with 16 TDs and 11 interceptions, with three 300-yard games. - Herald Bulletin

Hooker didn't earn the starting job last spring or last summer, but he sure did flourish once he took the reins. Capitalizing on a Joe Milton injury against Pittsburgh in the second game of the season, the 6-foot-4, 218-pounder wound up completing 206 of 303 passes for 2,945 yards with 31 touchdowns and only three interceptions, setting single-season school records for passer efficiency (181.4) and accuracy (68.0%) in the process. He became the first Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist for the Vols s ince Erik Ainge in 2006 and capped his season with 437 total yards and five aerial touchdowns in the bowl game. Hooker elected to use a sixth year of eligibility and is a huge reason for the notable optimism in Heupel's second season. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

UCF is reportedly negotiating a $17 million-$20 million settlement with the American Athletic Conference to clear a path to the Knights joining the Big 12 Conference in 2023. Cincinnati, Houston and UCF have been in negotiations with the AAC the past cou ple of months after all three accepted bids to join the Big 12 in September. The intent was to join the league by July 2024 at the latest, but hoping to make the move by 2023. AAC bylaws require schools to give 27 months' notice and pay a $10 million exi t fee, but an earlier exit would mean a negotiated settlement.According to a report by Action Network's Brett McMurphy, the exit fee is somewhere in the "$17 million to $20 million range." Initial reports had the AAC seeking $30 million-$35 millio n per school, which would be around double what the league received from UConn in 2019 when the school left early to rejoin the Big East ($17 million). A settlement could be reached this month, according to the report. - Orlando Sentinel
