Mazi Smith got his chance to settle in along Michigan's defensive line last year, blending in among a group of playmakers who helped take that side of the ball to new heights. Now, as the 2022 season nears, expectations are high for the senior defensive tackle from Grand Rapids. Smith, who was listed at 6-foot-3 and 326 pounds in the spring, will serve as the anchor up front this fall. Not just a guy who's called on to fill a role, but a leader tasked with helping bring the Wolverines through a transfor mation. "Every year the leadership changes hands," Smith said in the spring. "You've got to go out there and get it. Some people like to lead by example; some people like to talk. You've just got to go get it." Smith made sure to point out he "ain't the leader yet, but if I do everything right I will be." And with edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, and starting defensive tackle Christopher Hinton, all gone, the door is now open to some new voices. One of those expected to speak up is e dge rusher Mike Morris, called on to help fill the void on the outside. And while Morris, friendly, animated and serious, may do most of the talking, Smith enters the new season with the most experience. Not only has he appeared in 21 games over the past three seasons, but Smith has 14 starts under his belt - the most, by far, among Michigan's returning defensive linemen. He was the Wolverines' primary nose-gap tackle last year, a big body who could clog up the middle and help defend the run game. - Ann Arbor News

Player-led collectives have grown more common as some athletes worry about agents or other third parties taking a cut of their name, image and likeness deals. The most recent NIL trend swept through Alabama this past week with the formation of the Plains NIL Club. Roughly three-quarters of the Auburn football roster partnered together with YOKE, a licensing company, to offer fans a way to engage with Tigers' athletes throughout the season via an online membership.Bailey O'Sullivan, one of YOKE's co-founders, told AL.com that "more than 75% of the team" has signed on. Set to open this July, multiple Auburn players announced their intent to join, including senior starting center Nick Brahms, sophomore running back Jarquez Hunter and freshman quart erback Holden Geriner. Junior linebacker Kameron Brown said O'Sullivan, an Auburn alum, met with Auburn players over the last few weeks and each Tiger offered each an opportunity to join. - Birmingham News

Two of Penn State's biggest transfer additions have made their way to campus in time for the summer. Demeioun Robinson and Hunter Nourzad have both enrolled and could both play important roles in the season. Nourzad comes in as an offensive lineman best suited to play guard and according to Franklin will be in the competition along the interior. "He is a big, strong, powerful, thick guy," Franklin said. "... I think we've got really good competition at the guard position. I think we've got five guys tha t will be competing for those two starting jobs." - Centre Times

Tim McKay wants to change Raleigh as badly as he wants to pancake defensive linemen. The N.C. State offensive tackle, who graduated from Wakefield High, already has his sights set on a post-football career he hopes will keep him in his hometown long afte r he's done playing for the Wolfpack. "I want to invest in a local startup right here in the Triangle," said McKay, who was 16 years old when he enrolled at N.C. State in January of 2019, "and really help them grow and get off the ground and then expand to other states." McKay earned his business degree from N.C. State in May.He wants to continue playing football, both at N.C. State and then professionally, but whenever his he hangs up the helmet and shoulder pads, he wants to help Raleigh grow. Inspired by a recent trip to Charlotte, McKay said he'd like to explore adding infrastructure - specifically light rail - to the state capital. McKay, a redshirt sophomore, has dedicated a lot of time to studying the setup of major cities across the Unit ed States. "I know it can't be like San Francisco or Miami," McKay said. "But I can definitely take key points from Miami, what they're doing with bitcoin and Crypto currency, and San Francisco, they're heavy in their investing, in New York with their re al estate, and try to bring it here to Raleigh." - Raleigh News Observer

Entering the 2022 season, Rising isn't going to sneak up on anybody. Opposing teams have a year's worth of film on him. Everybody knows who he is. Rising is being mentioned as someone that deserves a spot on Heisman Watch lists. A lot should be expected of Rising as he enters the season as the undisputed starter, according to Scott Mitchell. "Cam Rising right now should be considered a Heisman Trophy candidate," he said. "That's my expectation."But Mitchell's expectations don't end there. "The ex pectation is that Utah ends up in the College Football Playoff. I think that's what they think, too. I think Cam Rising thinks that. That expectation is, this isn't bigger than us," he said. "With the type of talent they have coming back, across the boar d (that should be the expectation). "But also the maturity and the experience and the culture that's at Utah right now. This is a team and a program that's really right at that place, that place of winning the conference championship was amazing; the Ros e Bowl was incredible, but we can do more. That's what more is." Utah has an ideal opportunity to prove itself on a national stage with a season opener at Florida, on national television. - Deseret News

With Missouri beginning individual skill instruction and with fall camp opening July 31, the time is coming for him to decide on the team's starting quarterback. With four-star freshman Sam Horn in town after completing his high school baseball season, D rinkwitz finally has the pieces in place to make an informed choice. The contenders: Horn and fellow newcomer Jack Abraham, plus Brady Cook and Tyler Macon, who each started games for the Tigers last season in place of 2021's regular starter Connor Bazel ak. "I think I've been very clear since the start of spring that I would not name a starter until Sam Horn had the opportunity to compete for that position," Drinkwitz said during a Thursday press conference. "That is ongoing and starting right now." The complicating factor for Horn is the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.A two-sport star in high school, who didn't enroll early at MU due to his roundball obligations, Horn will be taken at some point in the July 17-19 draft. Depending on how h igh he goes and the money involved, Horn may well choose baseball. "I am not naive to the fact that Sam is going to have a difficult decision in front of him in mid-July," Drinkwitz said. "He is an unbelievable baseball player with the ability to get dra fted." - Columbia Daily Tribune
