  06/16/22 - DT *Mazi SmithJr/2023, Michigan

Mazi Smith got his chance to settle in along Michigan's defensive line last year, blending in among a group of playmakers who helped take that side of the ball to new heights. Now, as the 2022 season nears, expectations are high for the senior defensive tackle from Grand Rapids. Smith, who was listed at 6-foot-3 and 326 pounds in the spring, will serve as the anchor up front this fall. Not just a guy who's called on to fill a role, but a leader tasked with helping bring the Wolverines through a transformation. "Every year the leadership changes hands," Smith said in the spring. "You've got to go out there and get it. Some people like to lead by example; some people like to talk. You've just got to go get it." Smith made sure to point out he "ain't the leader yet, but if I do everything right I will be." And with edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, and starting defensive tackle Christopher Hinton, all gone, the door is now open to some new voices.

One of those expected to speak up is edge rusher Mike Morris, called on to help fill the void on the outside. And while Morris, friendly, animated and serious, may do most of the talking, Smith enters the new season with the most experience. Not only has he appeared in 21 games over the past three seasons, but Smith has 14 starts under his belt - the most, by far, among Michigan's returning defensive linemen. He was the Wolverines' primary nose-gap tackle last year, a big body who could clog up the middle and help defend the run game. - Ann Arbor News
