Richie Grant, Central Florida, Player News

Former UCF players Richie Grant, Aaron Robinson and Tre Nixon have been invited to participate in this year's virtual NFL scouting combine. The trio was among 323 college players selected for the event by the NFL. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the NFL announced there will be no in-person workouts at the combine. Those will take place during pro days at the individual schools. The Knights are hosting their pro day April 1. All interviews and psychological testing will take place virtually with there being limited in-person medical exams. - Orlando Sentinel

UCF safety Richie Grant isn't sure what happened on the play that knocked him out of the game during the third quarter of the Knights' loss to Tulsa on Oct. 10. But he does remember how badly he wanted to stay on the field and compete with his brothers. "All I can remember from that moment was I was telling the training staff, 'Let me get a couple of plays in. I don't want to let my brothers down,'" Grant recalled. "I didn't want to leave the field at all. "When I became aware of what was happening, I remember that was the only thought I had. I had to get back out there. I knew it was a crucial moment and I didn't want to let my team down."

A vicious hit left Grant on the ground for several minutes and took the air out of the stadium. Teammates huddled together under a constant drizzle, many on one knee watching as the training staff checked on their fallen teammate. Grant eventually got up and left the field under his own power. While he did return to the sidelines, he didn't return to action. UCF defensive back Richie Grant (27) runs during the Knights' loss to Tulsa on Oct. 3 at the Bounce House in Orlando. "I got a lot of text messages and calls; people telling me they were scared," Grant said. "To me, it felt like I was out a little bit and came back. I understood why they were scared like that. I remember the play before, but I didn't remember the play that happened." - Orlando Sentinel

UCF athletic director Danny White has signed a five-year contract that will pay him more than $1 million annually. White's base salary will start at $1.081 million and increase by 5% every year on the rollover date. The deal includes a $2.5 million buyout, which White or his new employer would owe UCF if he leaves the school before May 11, 2021 to become an athletic director at another school, an executive with a professional team, college conference or the NCAA, or an executive with a sports marketing, sports management company, broadcasting or social media company.

One of Duke AD Kevin White's five children, Danny White has helped UCF reach new heights since taking over in 2015. The football program has been one of the nation's best over the last three years, including going undefeated in 2017 and prompting White to declare the Knights national champions. The men's basketball team made the NCAA Tournament last year and barely lost to Duke in the second round. He also helped raise $31.7 million in financial commitments in 2019, nearly double the previous year and nearly four times what UCF raised just three years earlier. - AP College Football

Central Florida again shapes up as the nation's top Group of Five program heading into the season. Just not by nearly as wide a margin as the last couple of years. The Knights haven't lost a regular-season game since 2016 and now must try to continue that roll without star quarterback McKenzie Milton, who suffered a severe knee injury in last year's regular-season finale. UCF is trying to bounce back from a Fiesta Bowl loss to LSU that snapped the Knights' 25-game winning streak.

"We've got great belief in who and what we are as a program," UCF coach Josh Heupel said. "Our players are extremely confident. Since I've been here, I think our players have and probably always will have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder. I don't think that's a bad thing for our program." UCF could face a major challenge from Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference's East Division. Cincinnati returns the nucleus of a team that went 11-2 and beat Virginia Tech in the Military Bowl last season. - AP College Football

No one quite knew how good Richie Grant would be in his first year as a full-time starter for the UCF Knights. But throughout the 2018 season, he put the nation - and especially opposing quarterbacks - on notice. The redshirt junior safety became one of college football's best ballhawks, tying for third in the nation with six interceptions. Now a lot of people know how good Grant is; he has been placed on preseason national-watch lists for awards that honor either the sport's best defensive back, best defensive player or best overall player. UCF's own quarterbacks know that they also need to track Grant and his No. 27 jersey in practice, similar to how perhaps the greatest QB of all time would keep his eyes planted on a Hall of Fame safety. "I saw that Tom Brady had his play handbook and it said ‘Find 20' on every play for when he played [former Baltimore Ravens star] Ed Reed,” UCF quarterback Brandon Wimbush said.

"That's not something we do here, but when you're out there at the quarterback position, you have to seek out where 27 is." As good as his game already is, Grant knows he is not a finished product. Last year's class of NFL Draft-eligible safeties was a relatively weak one and Grant was in a good position to capitalize on his breakout 2018 campaign. He thought about entering the draft, but he decided to stay at UCF. "I knew I wasn't ready to take that leap," he said. - Orlando Sentinel
