Michigan defensive back Gemon Green, who made 24 starts at cornerback, has decided to prepare for the NFL Draft. Green, who arrived at Michigan in 2018, on Wednesday announced his decision on social media. The 6-foot-2, 186-pound Green was honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2022. He is the fourth Michigan defensive player to declare for the draft, joining fellow defensive back D.J. Turner, edge rusher Mike Morris and defensive tackle Mazi Smith. Morris and Smith declared for the NFL Draft on Tuesday. The deadline for players to declare is Monday. - Detroit News

On its face, Michigan has two returning starters at cornerback in Gemon Green (12 starts) and D.J. Turner (7). Both will enter fall camp as the frontrunners, with Jalen Perry and potentially true freshman Will Johnson in the mix. There isn't a ton of the depth at the position at the moment, but there's growing optimism with Johnson and returner Ja'Den McBurrows, who appeared in four games as a true freshman last season. Look for Green and Turner to be the guys on the outside to start the season. - Ann Arbor News

Last week, just as Michigan's football team was getting ready to put on the pads, Don Brown acknowledged the need to find a second starting cornerback. Ambry Thomas has departed to begin preparing for the NFL draft, forcing the Wolverines to turn to a group of inexperienced underclassmen. Brown, Michigan's defensive coordinator, on Monday revealed the early frontrunner during an interview on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show. "I think Gemon Green's done a good job there," Brown said. "I would say he's probably the leader in the clubhouse right now."

Green, a redshirt sophomore from DeSoto, Texas, appeared in 11 games last season. Most of his time was spent on special teams, where he racked up five tackles. But the 6-foot-2, 181-pound Green has the early lead over D.J. Turner and Jalen Perry, two others up for the starting role. "Gemon Green's really played well," Brown said. "He's a guy that's been with us for a period of time. Always had the athletic ability. Conceptually, he's kind of put it all together so we feel really good about him." - Ann Arbor News
