Arik Gilbert, considered an impact addition to the UGA football offense, wasn't at the team's first scrimmage Saturday. "Arik's dealing with some personal issues," coach Kirby Smart said. "We love him. We're thinking about him. We're trying to help him." The LSU transfer's absence raises the question of whether he will be available when No. 5 Georgia opens its season Sept. 4 against No. 2 Clemson. The former tight end was preparing to play wide receiver for the Bulldogs. "We hope to get him back soon," Smart said. Smart didn't get into specifics, but said Gilbert is in good hands having director of sports medicine Ron Courson and others to care for him."When you think about a medical staff like Ron Courson has, he has so much experience in deali ng those issues," Smart said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him right now as he deals with those personal issues." Safety Lewis Cine called Gilbert "as advertised," based on summer workouts. He was expected to bolster a receiving corps without star George Pickens who sustained a torn ACL this spring and missing for now Kearis Jackson who is still coming back from a knee scope and Jermaine Burton with a sprained ankle. Gilbert played in eight games for LSU as a true freshman, making 35 catches for 3 68 yards and two touchdowns. - Athens Daily Banner

George Pickens was the top target down the stretch with back-to-back 100-yard plus receiving games, but he's sidelined after ACL surgery. LSU transfer Arik Gilbert joins a pass-catching group that includes receivers Kearis Jackson, Jermaine Burton and Ar ian Smith, 6-foot-7, 280-pound Darnell Washington and John Fitzpatrick at tight end and running back James Cook. That's before we even get to spring game star receiver Adonai Mitchell. "There's more guys on this team than you normally see that can be in the game that's no different than your 1s," Daniels said.Georgia is giving the 6-foot-5, 248-pound Gilbert the chance to play wide receiver like he wanted, but how that translates to practice will be telling. "We don't get a chance to be on the fi eld with him in the position conditioning stuff so we're going to have to find that out in fall camp," Smart told WJOX in Birmingham. "He's bigger than your average wideout certainly." Gilbert worked this summer with both receivers coach Cortez Hankton a nd tight ends coach Todd Hartley, according to Daniels. "He takes time to learn the signals and picks it up really well," Daniels said. "He's got the skillset to play a lot of positions in the game of football. You try out and put your playmakers where t hey have the best chance to make plays. Wherever that is for him I'm sure they'll figure it out." - Athens Daily Banner

One of the big topics of discussion for Georgia on Tuesday was the team's use of the transfer portal. Few teams were as busy as the Bulldogs this offseason in regards to the portal, as Georgia added three highly-touted players in LSU tight end Arik Gilbe rt, Clemson cornerback Derion Kendrick and West Virginia safety Tykee Smith. Smart was asked about his prior insistence of only using the portal when a true need is present, and he explained how each of those players fit the bill. "The first two, the def ensive backs, we're under our scholarship quota of defensive backs. We had two guys come out early, two guys come out of the portal. We're at a deficit just from scholarship numbers, not to mention experience. Those two guys bring an immense amount of ex perience," Smart said. "With Arik, anytime you can get a skill player that can do things with the ball, you're always looking to be dynamic. You look at teams that have won the national championship recently: they're most dynamic on offense and at the sk ill positions." - Opelika-Auburn News

The Bulldogs are actually listing Gilbert as a wide receive r. He could be an answer at the X wide receiver position where George Pickens played, but whose season is in question after sustaining a torn ACL this spring.Gilbert came to LSU with huge expectations as a five-star prospect but opted out after ei ght games. The 6-foot-5, 248 pounder had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Tigers. Orgeron said after Gilbert opted out that he hoped he'd return to the Tigers. The long-winding offseason journey for tight end Arik Gilbert hasn't ended quite yet, but LSU coach Ed Orgeron said the former five-star recruit did have a "very good meeting" at the school's facilities recently. Gilbert, who was briefly committed to con ference rival Florida, returned to Baton Rouge in March to meet with the team. It is the first known time that Gilbert visited with LSU since he entered the NCAA transfer portal and left the team toward the end of last season. Orgeron said "no decision's been made" yet about just where Gilbert will enroll and play college football again, but the coach said "everybody was happy to see him" and the athletic department checked with its compliance office to make sure the visit could happen. "He hasn't made a decision yet, hasn't told us anything yet," Orgeron said. "I think it's still up in the air, but it was a very positive day when he came." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Orgeron told reporters in Wednesday's weekly Southeastern Conference teleconference that Gilbert met with him yesterday and told him that he intends to opt out of the rest of the season. "Arik and I had a good conversation yesterday. He told me his was opting out. He said his body was hurting and he had some things he had to take care of." Yeah," Orgeron said. "Is there a chance of him transferring? I don't k now that. He hasn't told me he's transferring, but obviously we're going to re-recruit him and obviously we wish him the best. Take care of the the things he needs to take care of and be back with us next year." Multiple sources confirmed Gilbert missed practice Monday, and 247Sports first reported Gilbert is "really, really homesick." His role in the offense is also a factor, sources said. LSU has frequently used Gilbert in trips or bunch formations, where three wide receivers line up on the left or right side of the formation, making it easier to lose Gilbert in traffic for easy yards. The Tigers have also used halfback motion into or out of the backfield to manipulate coverage schemes, creating matchups for the 6-foot-5, 249-pound tight end. "Tight ends are really difficult mismatch guys because of who ends up covering them most of the time," Alabama coach Nick Saban said."You ha ve your best corners covering wide receivers, but when these guys are lined up close to the core, their run-pass options are more difficult to define relative to how they line up and who ends up covering them and who ends up matching up on them. I've alw ays said that a tight end and a great running back are hard to cover. Those guys are mismatch problems because unless you put six defensive backs in there you're not going to have cover guys on them. You're going to have guys that you're probably putting on the field because they're good at stopping the run and other things." Several factors make Gilbert useful for the Tigers, but if he does see an increased workload on Saturday, it may be more necessity than anything else. Wide receiver Ja'marr Chase o pted out before the season began and Terrace Marshall opted out over the weekend. Marshall's departure is a critical blow: he's responsible for a third of LSU's receiving yards and 10 of its 17 receiving touchdowns. Racey McMath - fifth on the team in re ceptions and yards - is unlikely to play due to injury, Orgeron said. - Montgomery Advertiser

During an LSU football practice early last week, Arik Gilbert sprinted off the line of scrimmage for a vertical route. The Mike linebacker dropped into man coverage, but Gilbert ran past him down the middle of the field. He caught a touchdown, the kind o f play that destroys defensive morale. Gilbert, a freshman, has brought a new element to LSU's tight end position. He has the body of a traditional tight end, but he runs like a wide receiver. He can chip defensive ends and block linebackers, but he has the skillset to play either outside receiver position.Gilbert, whose first name is pronounced like "Eric," has already received praise during preseason practice. At 6-foot-5 and about 250 pounds, coach Ed Orgeron said LSU can use Gilbert in simila r fashion to former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 237-pound athletic marvel who made four All-Pro teams and twice led the NFL in yards receiving. "Arik is the tight end we've been looking for to stretch the field," Orgeron said. Gilbert's arrival helped LSU change the tight end position, a transformation in the works since LSU installed its run-pass option offense. After years of mainly using tight ends as blockers along the line of scrimmage, LSU has recruited tight ends who d ouble as wide receivers. - Baton Rouge Advocate
