  08/22/21 - TE Arik Gilbert, rSr/2025, Nebraska

  Arik Gilbert, considered an impact addition to the UGA football offense, wasn't at the team's first scrimmage Saturday. "Arik's dealing with some personal issues," coach Kirby Smart said. "We love him. We're thinking about him. We're trying to help him." The LSU transfer's absence raises the question of whether he will be available when No. 5 Georgia opens its season Sept. 4 against No. 2 Clemson. The former tight end was preparing to play wide receiver for the Bulldogs. "We hope to get him back soon," Smart said. Smart didn't get into specifics, but said Gilbert is in good hands having director of sports medicine Ron Courson and others to care for him.

"When you think about a medical staff like Ron Courson has, he has so much experience in dealing those issues," Smart said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him right now as he deals with those personal issues." Safety Lewis Cine called Gilbert "as advertised," based on summer workouts. He was expected to bolster a receiving corps without star George Pickens who sustained a torn ACL this spring and missing for now Kearis Jackson who is still coming back from a knee scope and Jermaine Burton with a sprained ankle. Gilbert played in eight games for LSU as a true freshman, making 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns. - Athens Daily Banner
