 Spencer Sanders, Mississippi, Player News

The self-described Portal King has struck again. On Thursday morning, Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss football landed Oklahoma State transfer quarterback Spencer Sanders, the second QB to join the Rebels' transfer class in as many days. Sanders was a four-year starter for the Cowboys, accumulating 9,553 passing yards, 67 touchdowns and 40 interceptions over the course of his career. Last season, he completed 57.6% of his passes for 2,642 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Sanders, a product of Denton, Texas, listed at 6-foot-1, has rushed the ball at least 100 times in each of his four seasons behind center, amassing 1,956 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns. This acquisition by Kiffin could indicate that Jaxson Dart has some competition for the starting quarterback job this offseason. Sanders has only one season of eligibility remaining and is choosing to spend it at Ole Miss. - The Clarion Ledger

Spencer Sanders came off the bench to throw the go-ahead touchdown pass, and Oklahoma State rallied to defeat Iowa State 20-14 on Saturday. Sanders, the regular starter, has been battling a shoulder injury. He replaced Gunnar Gundy late in the third quarter, and his 14-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Nixon with 9:18 remaining in the fourth put Oklahoma State up 17-14. It was Gundy's first career start. The son of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy had his moments, but he was benched after throwing an interception. With the win, Oklahoma State (7-3, 4-3 Big 12) remained in the running for a spot in the Big 12 title game. Xavier Hutchinson caught 10 passes for 106 yards and became Iowa State's career receptions leader. Hunter Dekkers passed for 274 yards, but he threw three interceptions as Iowa State (4-6, 1-6) turned it over five times.

Iowa State's Darien Porter blocked a punt in the second quarter, and the Cyclones took over at the Oklahoma State 9-yard line. Sean Shaw made a leaping grab in the back of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown reception from Dekkers that gave the Cyclones a 7-3 lead. Oklahoma State came right back. John Paul Richardson's 83-yard touchdown catch from Gundy put the Cowboys back on top. It was the longest reception of Richardson's career. Oklahoma State led 10-7 at halftime behind a defense that forced three turnovers and allowed just 116 yards. Iowa State's Jirehl Brock's 1-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half put the Cyclones up 14-10. With Oklahoma State up 17-14, Iowa State went for it on fourth-and-1 from its 25, but Dekkers was stuffed on a quarterback sneak, and Oklahoma State took over. Tanner Brown's 40-yard field put the Cowboys up 20-14. Iowa State appeared to have struck back with about four minutes remaining, but Jaylin Noel dropped what looked like it would be a 78-yard touchdown in the open field. The Cyclones ended up punting. Iowa State got it back one last time on its 28-yard line with 2:09 remaining and no timeouts. The Cyclones drove to the Oklahoma State 23, but Collin Oliver sacked Dekkers on fourth down to end the threat. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

OCT 24 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders accounted for 434 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in No. 11 OSU's 41-34 win over No. 20 Texas. It was his highest single-game total offense output against a Power Five opponent this season and his second-best total in any game this year. Sanders threw for 391 yards to mark the seventh 300-yard passing game of his career and move him into a tie for third in school history with Taylor Cornelius. The senior set a career-high with 57 pass attempts, tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history. Sanders moved ahead of Brandon Weeden and into second place on OSU's career list for pass attempts (1,147). He also tied a career-high in completions with 34. Sanders has 30 wins as the Cowboys' starting quarterback, trailing only Mason Rudolph's 32 for most all-time at OSU. - Big 12 Football

Spencer Sanders threw for 391 yards and hit Bryson Green with the game-winning touchdown pass with just over three minutes left, and No. 11 Oklahoma State defeated No. 20 Texas 41-34 on Saturday. Green's 41-yard touchdown came when he caught the ball on a slant, broke out of D'Shawn Jamison's grasp just inside the 35 and made a move on Jerrin Thompson to break into the open field. Green had five catches for a career-high 133 yards for Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1 Big 12), which bounced back from a double-overtime loss to TCU the previous week.

Oklahoma State's Jason Taylor II intercepted two of Quinn Ewers' passes for the Cowboys, and Kendal Daniels picked off Ewers in the final minute to end the Longhorns' final threat. Bijan Robinson ran for 140 yards and a touchdown and caught a 41-yard touchdown pass for Texas (5-3, 3-2). Ewers passed for 319 yards and two touchdowns, but he went 8 of 25 for 129 yards and two interceptions in the second half. Texas led 31-24 at halftime as both teams gained more than 300 yards before the break. Sanders' 10-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Presley and the extra point tied the game at 34 with 9:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, setting up the final frantic minutes. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Spencer Sanders ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and No. 7 Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 41-31 on Saturday. Sanders passed for 297 yards and ran for 56, and Bryson Green had five catches for a career-high 115 yards for the Cowboys (5-0, 2-0 Big 12). Texas Tech redshirt freshman Behren Morton got his first career start in place of Donovan Smith. He completed 39 of 62 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns for the Red Raiders (3-3, 1-2). Jerand Bradley caught eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown and Trey Cleveland caught nine passes for 110 yards for a Texas Tech team that was playing its fifth straight ranked opponent and already had claimed wins over Houston and Texas.

Morton completed 24 of 39 passes for 220 yards and both scores in the first half to help the Red Raiders take a 24-20 lead at the break. Tech gained 347 yards on 57 plays in the first two quarters. Sanders rolled out and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to trim Texas Tech's lead to 31-29 in the third. Sanders' shovel pass to Jaden Bray tied the score with 3:18 left in the third quarter. On Texas Tech's next possession, Morton made one of his few mistakes. Oklahoma State linebacker Mason Cobb intercepted him and returned the ball 13 yards to the Tech 19. Tanner Brown's fourth field goal of the game gave the Cowboys a 34-31 lead with 3 seconds left in the third quarter. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Jaden Nixon returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, and ninth-ranked Oklahoma State beat No. 16 Baylor 36-25 on Saturday in a rematch of last year's Big 12 championship game. Nixon's return started a flurry of 39 combined points in the third quarter. He found an open gap in the middle of the field and then broke free from the grasp of Devyn Bobby at the Oklahoma State 35. Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders continued his outstanding play. He finished 20-of-29 passing for 181 yards with a touchdown and an interception and ran 14 times for 75 yards. The Cowboys (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) also beat Baylor in the regular season last year, but came up inches short of their first conference title since 2011 when the Bears made a fourth-down stop just short of the end zone in the final seconds of the championship game.

After Nixon's return, Baylor (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) responded with Blake Shapen's 49-yard TD pass to Monaray Baldwin, who added a 70-yard catch-and-run score later in the third. True freshman Richard Reese had a 1-yard TD run on a short drive set up when Christian Morgan intercepted Sanders. Another long kickoff return for Oklahoma State, with Brennan Presley taking it to midfield after Reese scored, was followed immediately by Braydon Johnson's incredible 49-yard catch and then Dominic Richardson's 1-yard run. The Cowboys added a 19-yard field goal after Shapen's fourth-down incompletion from the Baylor 33 gave Oklahoma State the short field. Sanders threw seven picks in his two games against Baylor last season, including four in the Big 12 title game, but he was more efficient this time. Shapen completed 28 of 40 passes for 345 yards and Baldwin caught seven passes for 174 yards. Reese had 85 yards and a score on 17 carries. Six of the true freshman's TDs have come in Baylor's three home games. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Spencer Sanders threw four touchdown passes in just over one quarter of action, and No. 8 Oklahoma State rolled past Arkansas-Pine Bluff 63-7 on Saturday. Sanders matched his career high for touchdown passes in a game in the game's first 16 minutes. He completed 13 of 16 passes for 242 yards for the Cowboys (3-0) in their final nonconference game before entering Big 12 play.

Braydon Johnson caught two touchdown passes, making him one of five Oklahoma State players to catch at least one. The Cowboys gained 538 total yards. Skyler Perry threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Raequan Prince for Pine Bluff's only touchdown. The Golden Lions (2-1), an FCS program, managed just 13 first downs. Oklahoma State returned a blocked punt and a blocked field goal for touchdowns in the first half to take a 49-7 lead at the break. It was the first time in school history that Oklahoma State returned multiple blocked kicks for touchdowns. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Spencer Sanders passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 11 Oklahoma State defeated Arizona State 34-17 on a rainy Saturday night. Sanders passed for 268 yards and ran for 54, and Dominic Richardson ran for 131 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 44 yards for the Cowboys (2-0). Emory Jones passed for 223 yards and a touchdown and Xazavian Valladay rushed for 118 yards and a score for Arizona State (1-1). In the second quarter, Oklahoma State's Brock Martin's hit Valladay hard and forced a fumble, Tyler Lacy recovered and the Cowboys took over at the Arizona State 37. Oklahoma State took advantage, and Richardson's 3-yard touchdown run gave the Cowboys a 7-3 lead.

Later in the quarter, Sanders kept on the option for a 6-yard touchdown run to put Oklahoma State up 14-3 with just under three minutes left before halftime. His score capped an 11-play, 96-yard drive. The Cowboys tacked on a field goal to lead 17-3 at the break. Valladay's 1-yard touchdown run, which came shortly after a 73-yard reception by Giovanni Sanders, cut Oklahoma State's lead to 17-10. After an Oklahoma State field goal, Jones connected with Elijhah Badger for a 21-yard touchdown that pulled Arizona State to 20-17 with 14:25 to play. The Cowboys responded with trickery as Sanders found Bryson Green wide open on a flea-flicker, and the 31-yard score put Oklahoma State in control for good. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

SEPT 5 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Spencer Sanders, OSU, QB, Sr.,...Sanders became the second player in Big 12 history with 300 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in a half in Oklahoma State's 58-44 win over Central Michigan. He joined Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech), who accomplished the feat in 2016. Sanders became the first Cowboy to account for six touchdowns in a game since 2018. The senior set career highs with 406 passing yards, six total touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. His four passing touchdowns also tied his career high. With 313 passing yards in the first half, he became the first Cowboy to pass for 300 yards in a half since Taylor Cornelius on Nov. 10, 2018.   Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy deflected credit when he reached a career milestone. Spencer Sanders passed for a career-high 406 yards and accounted for six touchdowns and No. 12 Oklahoma State beat Central Michigan 58-44 on Thursday night to give Gundy his 150th coaching victory. Gundy improved to 150-69 in his 18th season coaching his alma mater. "Cool deal," he said. "Like I told the team, it takes a lot of really, really quality people and good young men for a guy to stay in one place long enough to win 150 games. I'm just lucky enough to be along for the ride." Sanders matched a career high with four touchdown passes and set a career mark with two rushing scores in the opener for both teams. "Knock on wood, he's really good," Gundy said. "He understands our concepts. He understands second nature where to go with the ball. And it's a big advantage for us." Braydon Johnson had career highs of six catches for 133 yards and Brennan Presley added five catches for 83 yards.

Daniel Richardson passed for a career-high 424 yards and threw four touchdown passes for Central Michigan. Lew Nichols III, the nation's leading rusher last year, ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Sanders passed for 313 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and ran for two more scores to help the Cowboys take a 44-15 lead. The Cowboys led 51-15 less than a minute into the third quarter before Central Michigan climbed back into the game. Jalen McGaughy's 54-yard touchdown pass from Richardson cut it to 58-44 with 3:15 remaining. McGaughy had six catches for 126 yards and two scores. - AP College Football

Spencer Sanders looked relaxed as he opened his fifth preseason camp as a Cowboy, and fourth as the starter. That look speaks to his comfort level, not his intentions for the OSU offense. When the season goes live, speed is the key in Sanders' mind. "I like playing with tempo," he said. "I like the defense on their heels. I like to keep them guessing. The more I keep you guessing, the more I keep on your heels, you don't know what to call, you don't know what to say. "The better I can keep you edgy, you've got to make quick play calls because I can move the offense pretty fast." Mike Gundy calls Spencer Sanders a 'magician' Twice already this preseason, head coach Mike Gundy has described Sanders as a "magician" in the Cowboy offense based on his in-depth knowledge of the system as a fifth-year senior. Last year, Gundy called Sanders the Tasmanian Devil of quarterbacks.

The amalgam of those two traits could be the special sauce that gets the Cowboys back to running track meets rather than huddling and milking clock and shortening games. Gundy and Sanders never desired to slow the offense down the past two seasons. But rampant injuries and inexperience at positions like offensive line and wide receiver hindered the pace. If you want to know what they would prefer the offense look like, flip on tape of the second half of the Fiesta Bowl, when Sanders led a rally from 21 points down for a 37-35 win over Notre Dame. Sanders threw the ball a career-high 51 times for 371 yards and four touchdowns, but also rushed for 125 yards in the most magnificent performance of his career. "Spencer can play fast," Gundy said. "That's the advantage we have with him. "Playing fast is the responsibility of the quarterback. If we stay healthy, it gives us an opportunity." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy offered up a new adjective to describe quarterback Spencer Sanders. "He has now become a magician in our offense," Gundy said from the stage on Wednesday at Big 12 Media Days at AT&T Stadium. Magician. Strong word, but not out of bounds for a guy who is entering his fourth year as the Cowboys' starting QB. It's also a bit of ammo for Sanders' vocal detractors, mostly from the social media realm - those who might believe Sanders disappears a little too often. Like, for instance, the last time he was in this stadium, when he threw four interceptions in the 21-16 loss to Baylor in the Big 12 Championship Game. Such is life with Sanders, whose inconsistencies early in his career made him a polarizing figure among Cowboy fans. Many support their quarterback. Others find it hard to live with the mistakes.

Sanders knows the haters are out there. "There's gonna be people that still hate me to this day because of that game," Sanders said. "I carry the chip on my shoulder, I put a smile on my face. I wake up and call my mom every day, and I go to work." Sanders made strides in his level of consistency last year. He set career highs for passing yards (2,839), passing touchdowns (20) and rushing yards (668), plus a career low for missed games, sitting out only the opener because of COVID-19 protocols. Prior to last season, he had never gone two consecutive games without a turnover, but did it three times. And he had just two turnovers during a six-game stretch from mid-October to late November when the Cowboys thrust themselves into the College Football Playoff race. "Spencer has been fantastic for us," Gundy said. "He knows (the offense). He can run it fast. He understands. The middle toward the end of last year he started to make really quality decisions in a short amount of time, which is very important in quarterback play in our opinion." - Daily Oklahoman

Between the creation of the transfer portal and the ability to play immediately, players across college athletics have been able to leave situations they didn't believe to be beneficial to them in recent years and suit up for a new team the following season. That increased level of movement hit a high mark this offseason as several high-profile quarterbacks have departed the Big 12 - and several others have replaced them. Oklahoma lost Caleb Williams to USC, where he rejoined former coach Lincoln Riley, and watched Spencer Rattler head to South Carolina, but new coach Brent Venables replaced them with UCF's Dillon Gabriel. Texas added Ohio State's Quinn Ewers, the No. 1-ranked high school prospect last season, to compete with Hudson Card for the starting role after Casey Thompson headed to Nebraska.

Former Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is at West Virginia, Kansas State added Nebraska's Adrian Martinez and Gerry Bohanon landed at USF after Blake Shapen won Baylor's spring quarterback competition. With Iowa State's Brock Purdy drafted in the seventh round by the San Francisco 49ers, only four teams still have a quarterback who finished last season for them: Oklahoma State and Spencer Sanders, who led the Big 12 in total offense last season; TCU and Max Duggan; Texas Tech and Tyler Shough; and Kansas and Jalon Daniels. - Lawrence Journal World

Oklahoma State football isn't the preseason front-runner, but the Cowboys are considered contenders near the top of the conference. The Big 12 Conference released its media-selected preseason football poll Thursday afternoon, and Oklahoma State checked in at third place, trailing Baylor and Oklahoma. Of 41 ballots, nine first-place votes went to the Cowboys. After securing the No. 1 spot for six consecutive years, the Sooners are no longer the preseason favorite. For the first time, that spot belongs to Baylor, the defending conference champion that kept OSU a few inches away from a Big 12 title. The Bears collected 17 first-place votes, and OU stands at No. 2 with 12 first-place votes.

Baylor garnered 365 points in the poll, OU had 354 and OSU received 342. There is a significant drop-off between OSU and the No. 4 team - Texas, which picked up 289 points. The first-place votes were spread among five teams. No. 4 Texas received two first-place votes, and a single vote went to No. 6 Iowa State. The Cowboys advanced one spot from their preseason standing in the 2021 poll, which showed more agreement among voters than this year's poll did. In 2021, Oklahoma picked up 35 of the 39 first-place votes, and all others went to Iowa State. - Stillwater Press

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Sanders could be one of the nation's best players if he can avoid mistakes. He threw four interceptions in a Big 12 title game loss to Baylor and then passed for 371 yards and ran for 125 in a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. He passed for 2,839 yards and ran for 668 last season. - AP College Football

When the Oklahoma State football season ended, quarterback Spencer Sanders was standing on the stage at the Fiesta Bowl, holding the offensive MVP trophy from the 37-35 comeback win over Notre Dame. He had thrown for 371 yards and four touchdowns, both season highs. He had completed 34 of 51 passes and rushed for 125 yards, all of which were career highs. And he helped lead the Cowboys out of a 28-7 hole for one of the biggest victories in program history. So it seems safe to say Sanders closed the season with the best performance of his career.

Of course, one game earlier, Sanders threw four interceptions as the Cowboys came up inches short of the Big 12 championship. And that encapsulates Sanders' embattled Cowboy career. However, in 2021, he showed more consistency, despite a couple of lapses, than he had shown in the previous two seasons. Now with Sanders heading toward his fourth season as the starting quarterback, the Cowboys know what they have: a special talent whose mistake-prone tendencies are becoming fewer and farther between. - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State was a step slow in the first half, appearing to be stuck in the desert sand while Notre Dame raced around the field. A quick scoring drive just before halftime gave the No. 9 Cowboys a spark and they rode it one of the biggest victories in school history. Led by Spencer Sanders, Oklahoma State pulled off the biggest comeback in Fiesta Bowl history, overcoming a 21-point deficit to beat No. 5 Notre Dame 37-35 on Saturday. Sanders accounted for 496 yards and threw three of his four touchdown passes to Tay Martin, including a 9-yarder to cap a four-play, 75-yard drive just before halftime. "Us going down and scoring quickly just before the half, that gave us hope," Oklahoma State Mike Gundy said. "That gave us a chance as coaches to say, "Guys, we're fine." Oklahoma State (12-2, No. 9 CFP) came up inches short of securing a College Football Playoff spot in a loss to No. 6 Baylor at the Big 12 title game and fell into 21-point, first-half hole against Notre Dame (11-2, No. 5 CFP).

Jack Coan led Notre Dame's early charge while throwing for a Fiesta Bowl-record 509 yards and five touchdowns. Sanders and Martin brought the Cowboys back. Sanders, who had a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Bray in the first quarter, cut Notre Dame's lead to 28-14 with a 9-yard scoring pass to Martin with 37 seconds left in the first half. The pair connected for two more touchdowns, from 5 and 8 yards, to tie the game, and the Cowboys went up 34-28 on three field goals by Tanner Brown. Sanders threw for 371 yards on 34-of-51 passing and ran for 125 yards after throwing four interceptions in the Big 12 title game. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Spencer Sanders threw for a touchdown and ran for another and No. 7 Oklahoma State beat No. 10 Oklahoma 37-33 on Saturday night to keep alive its College Football Playoff chances and stop the Sooners' streak of Big 12 titles at six. Oklahoma State (11-1, 8-1, No. 7 CFP) snapped a six-game losing streak to Oklahoma. The Cowboys will play No. 9 Baylor next Saturday for the Big 12 championship. Oklahoma (10-2, 7-2, No. 10 CFP) got the ball one last time at its 20-with 54 seconds remaining and no timeouts. Caleb Williams scrambled and ran 56 yards to put the Sooners in scoring range. But Oklahoma State's Collin Oliver sacked Williams on fourth down at the Oklahoma State 32 with eight seconds remaining, setting off a wild celebration.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy won for just the third time in 17 tries against Oklahoma. Now, the Cowboys can win their first Big 12 title since 2011. Oklahoma opened the second-half scoring in an odd way. Oklahoma's Perrion Winfrey hit Oklahoma State's Dominic Richardson, the ball came loose, and Oklahoma State recovered in the end zone for a safety. Oklahoma struck again after forcing a three-and-out. Presley muffed the punt, and Justin Broiles recovered in the end zone to give the Sooners a 33-24 lead. Sanders went 37 yards for a touchdown on an option keep, and Oklahoma State cut Oklahoma's lead to 33-31 with 13:52 remaining. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State is going to play for a championship because of its dominating defense. Oklahoma State wrapped up its first spot in the Big 12 championship game with a 23-0 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday night, completely throttling an offense that hadn't been shut out since 1997. The Cowboys have allowed only one offensive touchdown over their past four games, but this was their first shutout on the road since 1995. Spencer Sanders threw a touchdown and ran for another score, and Tanner Brown kicked three field goals for the Cowboys (10-1, 7-1, CFP No. 9). The defense limited Texas Tech (6-5, 3-5), which had scored in 302 consecutive games, to 108 total yards that included a 25-yard pass on the final drive.

With Bedlam at home next Saturday against 12th-ranked Oklahoma, the Cowboys are already assured of playing in the Big 12 title game Dec. 4 at AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Still to be determined is if they will be the home or visiting team, and who they will play. Oklahoma State and Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1, CFP No. 13) are tied for the Big 12 lead, so the winner next Saturday night will finish first in the regular-season standings. No. 11 Baylor (9-2, 6-2, CFP No. 11), which hosts Texas Tech earlier that day, is the only other team that could get in the title game. Oklahoma State had its own issues at times offensively, but ended up with 427 total yards never trailed after going 70 yards on its opening drive for a 24-yard field goal. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Spencer Sanders threw two touchdown passes, No. 11 Oklahoma State had eight sacks and the Cowboys beat West Virginia 24-3 on Saturday. Oklahoma State (8-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 11 CFP) has won seven straight over the Mountaineers (4-5, 2-4). The Cowboys pushed around West Virginia's offensive line all game. Devin Harper and Brock Martin had two sacks apiece for the Cowboys. West Virginia, which compiled 492 total yards in a win over Iowa State last week, was limited to 133 total yards Saturday, including 17 yards on the ground against the Big 12's top rushing defense. "That was a pretty impressive defensive performance by our guys," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "I'm kind of shocked, to be honest with you, that we could play that well defensively against them on the road as well as they've played offensively the last two weeks. Defensively, we just dominated the game. I don't know what else to say." Both of Sanders' TD passes went to Tay Martin in the right corner of the end zone in single coverage.

A roughing-the-passer call against West Virginia's Jared Bartlett on third down gave the Cowboys first-and-goal at the 6 in the second quarter. Sanders found the 6-foot-3 Martin in the end zone on the next play. West Virginia's Graeson Malashevich couldn't corral a third-quarter punt and Oklahoma State's Korie Black recovered at the Mountaineers' 26. Four players later Sanders and Martin connected for a 12-yard TD for a 17-3 lead. Sanders finished 21 of 31 for 182 yards. He threw one interception. Jaylen Warren closed out the scoring with a 13-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

This was what No. 15 Oklahoma State fans have been waiting for. Spencer Sanders threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 53 yards and a score, all in the first half, to lead Oklahoma State to a 55-3 victory over Kansas on Saturday night. Jaylen Warren added 69 yards rushing on just nine carries and backup running back Dominic Richardson gained 79 yards and a touchdown on 11 rushes for the Cowboys (7-1, 4-1 Big 12). "It's just a great chemistry moment for our team, I thought we just all grew as a team today," Sanders said. "No matter what the score was, we just kept moving." After suffering their first loss, 24-21 to Iowa State last week, the Cowboys responded by dominating Kansas.

It was a rough day for Kansas (1-7, 0-5), which lost its seventh consecutive contest. Backup quarterback Miles Kendrick, who entered the game in the third quarter with the Jayhawks trailing 45-0, led them with 32 yards rushing on nine carries. One week after an outstanding performance in which Kansas led No. 4 Oklahoma 17-7 late in the third quarter before the Sooners rallied for a 35-23 triumph, the Jayhawks looked more like their usual selves in this one. "It's frustrating for them, it's frustrating for the coaches, but ultimately it's my job to get this team to play more consistently. And I haven't done that," KU coach Lance Leipold said. "We're going to continue to work at it. We have a long way to go yet, in growing and understanding. We'll find out if (that Oklahoma game was) a blip on how we play the rest of the season out." Oklahoma State, which hadn't scored more than 32 points this season and averaged 25.7, led 38-0 at halftime and held a 331-49 advantage in yards. Kansas didn't achieve a first down until about six minutes into the third quarter, when the Cowboys already led 45-0. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Spencer Sanders completed 22 of 34 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns, leading Oklahoma State to a 31-20 victory over No. 25 Kansas State on Saturday night. Jaylen Warren rushed for 123 yards on 27 carries and added 81 yards on four receptions for Oklahoma State (4-0, 1-0 Big 12). Sanders also scored a rushing touchdown as Oklahoma State's defense stifled Kansas State's potential comeback attempt. "I made sure I stayed and I watched some extra little film this week, I just wanted to play better," said Spencer, who threw for just 82 yards last week in a 21-20 win over Boise State. "I feel like we all played better, everybody. Heck of a job by the defense. I'm happy we won and I'm just excited to see how much further we can progress." The Cowboys failed to score in the second half for the second consecutive contest.

After compiling 294 yards of total offense and building a 31-10 advantage late in the second quarter, Oklahoma State went cold, gaining just 54 yards in the third quarter, including four consecutive three-and-out possessions. "In the second half, we really weren't trying to do that, in fact we talked about not doing that," OSU coach Mike Gundy said of letting up with a big lead. "We didn't block as well for a quarter and a half. Fortunately, defense was playing good, we started to get a pass rush going in the second half and get some pressure on those guys." - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Mike Gundy has said many times while working with young quarterbacks at Oklahoma State that it takes a few years of starting experience before the athlete truly grasps the concepts of college football. And with 20 games now under his belt, Spencer Sanders is approaching that level for the Cowboys. And according to his head coach, the Denton, Texas, product has already shown signs of doing just that this offseason. "We've been very impressed and excited about Spencer's development. My personal opinion is last year the spring ball that he missed and summer conditioning because of COVID set him back," Gundy said. "And I feel like in the two months that we watched him over spring ball, he's developed more than he has in two years. "So, we'll find out once the season starts. There's never been a question with his toughness, his commitment and his competitive nature." His competitive nature is something Gundy has worked to harness over the past few years.

At times in the past, Sanders would turn his passion to compete into compounding mistakes - driven by trying make up for a previous mistake, only leading to another. That was most evident in his first season as the starting signal caller when he turned the ball over five times in a loss at Texas Tech. But it's finding that balance between making a play to help the team vs. making a play that hurts the team. "He makes plays out here," Gundy said. "The defense makes plays against him, too, which is good. So I just feel like he's in a good spot. Is he gonna make mistakes? Sure he is. Sometimes, will he fire one to the wrong team? Sure he will, just like Mason (Rudolph) did." - Stillwater Press

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy saw promise in the future of Spencer Sanders based on what the quarterback showed in spring ball. "We've been very impressed and excited about Spencer's development," Gundy said Thursday at Big 12 Media Days. "My personal opinion is last year, the spring ball that he missed, and summer conditioning, because of COVID, set him back. "I feel like the two months that we watched him over spring ball, he's developed more than he has in two years." Last season, Sanders continued to deal with issues of inconsistency and untimely turnovers. Gundy feels his quarterback will handle such situations better this year because of his growth. "We'll find out when the season starts," Gundy said. "There's never been a question about his toughness, his commitment and his competitive nature. I think that (quarterback coach) Tim Rattay has done a fantastic job of developing him, and he looked very comfortable as we wrapped up spring in the month of April." - Daily Oklahoman

As the Cowboys wrapped up their first week of spring practice, the message to Spencer Sanders - who is in his fourth year in the program and third as starting quarterback - was clear. "We want to be a top-10 passing team in the country," OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. "Plain and simple. So we've got to be able to throw the football. And that's the direction it's going." Spencer Sanders' passing statistics were remarkably similar from 2019 to 2020. In both seasons, Sanders completed exactly 155 of 247 passes, for 2,065 yards in 2019 and 2,007 yards in 2020, with a TD/interception ratio of 16/11 in 2019 and 14/8 in 2020. Holding the MVP trophy from the Cheez-It Bowl in December, Spencer Sanders had firmed up his grip on Oklahoma State's starting quarterback job. Sanders turned in his best performance of the year in the season's final game, showing the consistency, accuracy and game management the Cowboys needed from their leader. - Daily Oklahoman

Spencer Sanders will close the door on his third year in the OSU program with the Cowboys' spring game at noon on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. But Sanders has missed out on some key developmental periods during his career. He missed the final six weeks of his redshirt freshman season because of a thumb injury, and was robbed of spring ball last year. Then he missed a few more weeks at the start of the 2020 season with an ankle injury. With all that taken into account, Sanders is in that wheelhouse of two-and-a-half to three years where Gundy says the quarterback should start to solve the Rubik's Cube.

"I'm seeing things now that I didn't see from him last year," Gundy said of Sanders. "Now, he just needs to continue to do it, we need to keep things simple, let him play fast and do what he does. Let him roll." Adding to Sanders' comfort in the offense, he's working with the same coordinator and quarterback coach in consecutive seasons for the first time in his OSU career. So rather than building relationships and learning a new voice, he's rolling forward with the momentum he gained toward the end of last season - particularly in the Cowboys' 37-34 win over Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl. "I've been through three coaches, so I've been through different technique, different footwork," Sanders said. "I would say from fall camp to spring ball, I feel like I'm a lot more comfortable. I feel like the offense is a lot more comfortable. I feel like we're moving good and we're knowing each other." - Daily Oklahoman

Spencer Sanders threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, and Oklahoma State held off No. 18 Miami for a 37-34 victory in the Cheez-It Bowl on Tuesday. Oklahoma State (8-3) scored on its first three possessions while jumping out to a 21-0 lead. Sanders threw TD passes of 30 and 32 yards to Presley, and LD Brown had a 2-yard touchdown run.   A week after a three-turnover game, the OSU quarterback was the steadying force on offense. Even though he wasn't great throwing the ball - 14-of-23 for 108 yards - he was clearly mindful of not throwing it to the other team. A couple of times, he opted to throw it away instead of trying to make a tough play. Those were smart decisions. He also held on to the football, whether he was running or moving around in the backfield. Not once did he put it on the ground. Turnovers would've been killer with Tylan Wallace, Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown hobbled, but Sanders steered clear of disaster Saturday. - Daily Oklahoman

After reviewing the game tape, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy was not as bothered by quarterback Spencer Sanders' three turnovers as he was immediately following Saturday's 41-34 loss to Texas. Sanders fumbled twice and threw an interception, all of which led to Texas points in the overtime defeat. "The interception, he threw the ball behind the receiver and the Texas guy was in good position," Gundy said Monday in his weekly Zoom teleconference. "The ball exchange issue, he needs to have a better grip on the ball. That's his responsibility on the one we dropped in the first quarter. That's reps. "The strip right before halftime, he was in the pocket for almost five seconds and the guy came from behind. Little better feel for the game. Nobody's open, pull it down, take off and run."

Sanders has turned the ball over five times in the last two games, reigniting the feel of his freshman season last fall, when turnover issues plagued the young quarterback through the middle of the season. But Gundy isn't as concerned about this year's issues. "It was almost like a perfect storm," Gundy said. "We had some issues to correct with Spencer last year. What happened Saturday was not what we dealt with with him last year. Just had a little bit of a perfect storm. Hopefully, we can get some of that corrected before the next game. I'm not as concerned about it as what I was after the game, just based on seeing what transpired." - Daily Oklahoman

Spencer Sanders and Shane Illingworth have been splitting time with the first team at practice for several days now, but Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy isn't committing to a starter for Saturday's game against No. 17 Iowa State. "If I knew, I wouldn't tell you," Gundy said with a wry smile on Monday morning. "We might play both. "I'm not sure right now. We continue to get 'em quality work. Spencer's healthy and then, obviously, Shane's played pretty good. I'm just glad to have a couple guys that can play. I've had some years around here where I was down to my third-team guy in the middle of the season. So we're just thankful that we've got a couple guys that we trust that can get out there and play."   Oklahoma State starting quarterback Spencer Sanders is in a walking boot and his status for Saturday remains unknown, coach Mike Gundy said on Monday. "We booted him up," Gundy said. "We'll take it off on Tuesday, then put him out there on Wednesday and go from there." Gundy later characterized the injury as "mild." Sanders injured his ankle on the opening series of the 16-7 win over Tulsa on Saturday. He tried to play on the injury, but left after a fumble on the Cowboys' second possession. During the game on Saturday, the injury was described by the Cowboy radio broadcast crew as a "high ankle injury." The most common such injury is a high ankle sprain, but what, exactly, is a high ankle sprain? And what makes it different from a typical sprained ankle?

In general, it comes down to which ligaments were injured. "The high ankle sprain, when you hear that term thrown around, that's usually involving a ligamentous complex called the syndesmosis, and the syndesmosis is a pretty complex group of ligaments that runs up and down the entire length of the lower leg between the tibia and the fibula," said Dr. Brian Clowers, who did not treat Sanders, but is an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in foot and ankle surgery at Ortho Central in Norman. "When those ligaments get injured, it's generally something that takes a little bit more energy than your garden-variety ankle sprain, a lateral ankle sprain. "As a result, the high ankle sprain tends to respond a little bit slower to rehab." - Daily Oklahoman

He quarterbacked OSU to seven wins in 10 games last season before a thumb injury effectively ended his season. Mike Gundy declined to place Sanders in the realm of Rudolph 2016, Weeden 2011 or Robinson 2008, NFL-level quarterbacks who were embarking on their second season leading the Cowboys. "Spencer's further along than he was at this time last year," Gundy said of Sanders. "He still has a ways to go; he missed quite a few games with injury. So I'm not sure that he falls into the category of a veteran seasoned quarterback. "I would say that in the latter part of this season, if he continues to work and compete, that he can get in that category." But Sanders has notched three road wins, including at 23rd-ranked Iowa State. He passed for more than 2,000 yards, rushed for 109 yards at both Oregon State and Texas, and threw 16 touchdown passes. Sanders also threw 11 interceptions and was prone to fumble, so he's got to correct the turnover bug. - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State is taking a step forward with Name, Image and Likeness. The Cowboys announced a five-year branding partnership with INFLCR on Tuesday to empower student-athletes on social media and bring OSU to the forefront of NIL solutions. OSU student-athletes in all 16 sports will become their own brand ambassadors with instant access to photos and videos from the university's creative teams, national media outlets and photo wire services, as well as educational tools and analytics to enhance their digital performance, according to the release. "INFLCR is an elite brand-management tool, and we truly believe it's going to take our program and our players to a whole new level," OSU men's basketball coach Mike Boynton said in a release. "It's going to allow them to put themselves in a position to be empowered to tell their stories.   A few days after he tore a ligament in his thumb in a game against Kansas last November, Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders joined an elite quarterback club. Not the kind of club one wants to join, but rare one nonetheless. The name of the club isn't all that catchy, either: Quarterbacks who had the same surgery as Drew Brees. Sanders tore the ulnar collateral ligament in the thumb of his throwing hand, rendering him unable to grip a football, much less throw one with the usual zip he had shown through the first two-thirds of his freshman season.

The UCL tear of the thumb isn't uncommon in sports, but the type of surgery Sanders received to repair it is still somewhat new in the medical world, meaning it has been around for only a few years. Two months before Sanders suffered his injury, Brees - the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints - became the most notable quarterback to have the specific surgery Sanders had. As OSU nears the start of preseason camp, Sanders' thumb will continue to be tested. And a thumb injury for a quarterback can be detrimental to nearly everything he does. - Daily Oklahoman

He's one of five quarterbacks from the Big 12, which matches the SEC for the highest total among all conferences. In 2019, Sanders was voted by the league's head coaches as the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, setting an Oklahoma State freshman record by passing for 2,065 yards despite the fact that he missed the final two games of the season.

The Denton, Texas native finished the year ranked sixth nationally among freshmen with 244.8 yards of total offense per game. He was also one of only 12 freshmen nationally to pass for more than 2,000 yards and averaged 57.1 rushing yards per game, ranking third in the nation among all freshman quarterbacks.   Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders will miss the rest of the season after having thumb surgery this week. ESPN, The Oklahoman and The Sports Animal reported the news on Thursday. Oklahoma State did not immediately confirm the report when contacted by The Associated Press. Sanders set Oklahoma State's freshman record for passing yards in a season with 2,065 and ran for 625 yards. He left last Saturday's game against Kansas in the third quarter with a right (throwing) hand injury, and he wore a light brace after the game. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said at the time that the move was a precaution and he wanted to give Dru Brown a chance to play. Brown stepped in and completed 3 of 5 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Brown, a graduate transfer, passed for 5,273 yards and 37 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter at Hawaii. - AP College Football
