  04/14/20 - Zack BaunrSr/2020, Wisconsin, 6-2, 238 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

Former Wisconsin linebacker Zack Baun has notified all NFL teams that he had a diluted urine sample at the NFL combine, a red flag as it pertains to league drug-testing mechanisms, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Although a diluted sample doesn't prove the presence of a banned substance, it typically constitutes a failed test. Per Schefter's sources, Baun attributed the finding to drinking too much water for weigh-in purposes, attempting to drive up his weight to impress talent evaluators. Baun is listed at 6 foot 2 and 238 pounds. Under the NFL's previous collective bargaining agreement, the diluted sample would have counted as a strike against Baun, but Schefter noted it will not under the newly approved CBA.

He tweeted teams thus don't believe it will impact Baun's draft status. Under the old CBA, a positive first test meant a referral to the league's substance abuse program, and a second violation would have resulted in a fine of two game checks. The new CBA puts weight on treatment more than punishment. Baun is expected to be selected late in the first round or early in the second in the draft April 23. The former Brown Deer High School standout finished with 19½ tackles for lost yardage last year and 12½ sacks. He was second-team All-American according to the Associated Press and was first-team all-Big Ten. - Journal Sentinel

  04/12/20 - Zack BaunrSr/2020, Wisconsin, 6-2, 238 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

The warnings his friends and former teammates gave him have borne out. The last few weeks have been the longest of Zack Baun's life. The University of Wisconsin linebacker was told that the time between UW's pro day (March 11) and the start of the NFL draft, slated for Thursday, April 23, was going to be tough. Even aside from the current state of the world, Baun's felt the days drag on. His anticipation for the draft and his readiness for the challenges ahead can only do so much to balance out the patience he's required to show at this time.

"I really got hints from linebackers in the past and guys that have done it before. They really laid it out very well for me. They told me that (this time) would seem like the longest month-and-a-half of my life and that's what it's been," Baun said. "It's been hard. It's really been all I think about lately." Baun's goal for the 2019 football season - which saw the Badgers post a 10-4 record and play in the Rose Bowl - was to put himself in a position to be drafted. He didn't have a round or selection in mind, but he wanted his senior year to be good enough to hear his name called. He proceeded to have one of the best seasons in UW history as a pass rusher. His 12½ sacks last year are third-most in a single season by a Badger, and he tallied 76 total tackles, an interception for a touchdown and two forced fumbles. He became the first UW linebacker to earn consensus All-American honors. - Wisconsin State Journal

  04/11/20 - *Quintez CephusrJr/2020, Wisconsin, 6-1, 202 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Cephus said after his disappointing time at the combine, he made some adjustments to his sprinting style and concentrated on doing the little things to improve his time - even though he believes his game speed is plenty fast to set him up for NFL success. "When I was there, I was just thinking I was going to be free and run. But my style of running is to stand straight up, so I went back and gave myself a couple cues to help me stay down, and I was able to run better, as we know," Cephus said. "I was thankful for that." Cephus also seems to have effectively answered teams' questions about the sexual assault allegations for which he was acquitted in August.

The charges led to his suspension from the team for the entire 2018 season and his expulsion from school before the not guilty verdict allowed him to be reinstated. Asked Friday how he answered personnel executives' questions about the incident and ensuing experience, Cephus replied, "A lot of the questions I got were how did I handle adversity - because I had a lot of it. Who were my go-to people and how did I go through it and how did it shape me. "Everybody did their research on me, and they know the kind of man that I am. They just wanted to hear me open up and really get to know me just by listening to how I present myself. It wasn't that challenging. I enjoyed sharing my story." - Journal Sentinel

Former Green Bay Packers wide receivers coach Alvis Whitted has accepted the same position at Wisconsin. Wisconsin announced Wednesday that Whitted has joined Badgers coach Paul Chryst's staff. The Packers fired Whitted on Jan. 30 after one season. Whitted had been Colorado State's wide receivers coach for seven seasons before joining the Packers staff. During Whitted's stint at Colorado State, Rashard Higgins in 2014 and Michael Gallup in 2017 were finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation's top college receiver. He played in the NFL from 1998-2006 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders. - AP College Football

The fastest running back in Indianapolis also measured in bigger than his two nearest competitors, J.K. Dobbins of Ohio State and D'Andre Swift of Georgia, to be the first runner selected. He outran Swift in the 40 (4.48) with a 4.39, and posted better numbers in the vertical jump and broad jump than Swift, too. An injured ankle, meanwhile, limited Dobbins to only the bench press. Dobbins had 23 reps compared with 17 for Taylor. - AP College Football

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin,...A two-time Doak Walker Award winner and two-time unanimous first-team All-American, Taylor will go down as one of the greats to ever play the position. He finished his career with 6,174 rushing yards and 55 total touchdowns to highlight a collection of accomplishments and records almost too long to list. The first player in FBS history to rush for 6,000 yards in just three seasons, Taylor stands No. 6 all-time in rushing with his 6,174 career yards. That total represents the FBS record for most yards in a three-year span - by a margin of more than 500 yards over the second-place total.

Taylor finished his junior season with 2,003 rushing yards to become just the third player in FBS history with multiple 2,000-yard rushing seasons, joining Badgers legend Ron Dayne and Iowa State's Troy Davis. Taylor is the only FBS player to record three consecutive seasons of 1,900-plus yards. His combined 4,197 yards over his sophomore and junior seasons are the most by any player in a two-year span in FBS history, breaking the previous mark of fellow Badger Melvin Gordon (4,196, 2013-14). - Wisconsin Football

He made another seven receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown vs. Oregon in the Rose Bowl. As a sophomore in 2017, Cephus caught 30 passes for 501 yards and six touchdowns before suffering a season-ending leg injury that forced him to miss the Badgers' final five games.   01/06/20 - *Quintez CephusrJr/2020, Wisconsin, 6-1, 202 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Wisconsin is losing its top running back and now its top wide receiver to the NFL. Quintez Cephus announced Monday on Twitter and Instagram that he will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. "I'm excited to put my name in for the draft and to have a chance to play at the highest level,” Cephus said. The announcement came three days after record-setting junior tailback Jonathan Taylor announced his decision to enter the draft. The 6-foot-1, 207-pound Cephus led Wisconsin in receptions (59), receiving yards (901) and touchdown receptions (seven) in 2019. Cephus missed the final five games of the Badgers' 2017 campaign because of a broken right leg and did not play at all in 2018 after being expelled from school following sexual assault charges. Cephus was acquitted by a jury in August, reinstated by school officials and was ruled academically eligible for 2019. - AP College Football

Jack Coan delivered two momentum-shifting touchdown passes in the snow for No. 13 Wisconsin, Jonathan Taylor added three touchdowns to his FBS-leading total and the Badgers forcefully repossessed Paul Bunyan's Axe by beating No. 9 Minnesota 38-17 on Saturday to win the Big Ten West Division. Quintez Cephus caught five passes for 114 yards, including a 47-yarder for a score midway through the third quarter that gave Wisconsin (10-2, 7-2, No. 12 CFP) a 17-7 lead. Coan connected with Taylor for a 28-yard touchdown strike late in the second quarter that gave the Badgers the lead after a slow start, sending them to the Big Ten championship game for a rematch with second-ranked Ohio State.

Tanner Morgan passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns for the Gophers (10-2, 7-2). They watched their dream season take a painful hit from their oldest rival after ending a 14-game losing streak to the Badgers a year ago with a 37-15 victory at Wisconsin. Minnesota was seeking to go undefeated at home for the first time since 1954, but the Badgers reasserted their recent dominance by taking home the traveling trophy for the 22nd time in the last 25 seasons. They took a 61-60-8 series lead. - Wisconsin/AP College Football
