 Zack Baun, Wisconsin, Player News

  04/14/20 - OLB Zack BaunrSr/2020, Wisconsin, 6-2, 238 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

Former Wisconsin linebacker Zack Baun has notified all NFL teams that he had a diluted urine sample at the NFL combine, a red flag as it pertains to league drug-testing mechanisms, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Although a diluted sample doesn't prove the presence of a banned substance, it typically constitutes a failed test. Per Schefter's sources, Baun attributed the finding to drinking too much water for weigh-in purposes, attempting to drive up his weight to impress talent evaluators. Baun is listed at 6 foot 2 and 238 pounds. Under the NFL's previous collective bargaining agreement, the diluted sample would have counted as a strike against Baun, but Schefter noted it will not under the newly approved CBA.

He tweeted teams thus don't believe it will impact Baun's draft status. Under the old CBA, a positive first test meant a referral to the league's substance abuse program, and a second violation would have resulted in a fine of two game checks. The new CBA puts weight on treatment more than punishment. Baun is expected to be selected late in the first round or early in the second in the draft April 23. The former Brown Deer High School standout finished with 19½ tackles for lost yardage last year and 12½ sacks. He was second-team All-American according to the Associated Press and was first-team all-Big Ten. - Journal Sentinel

The warnings his friends and former teammates gave him have borne out. The last few weeks have been the longest of Zack Baun's life. The University of Wisconsin linebacker was told that the time between UW's pro day (March 11) and the start of the NFL draft, slated for Thursday, April 23, was going to be tough. Even aside from the current state of the world, Baun's felt the days drag on. His anticipation for the draft and his readiness for the challenges ahead can only do so much to balance out the patience he's required to show at this time.

"I really got hints from linebackers in the past and guys that have done it before. They really laid it out very well for me. They told me that (this time) would seem like the longest month-and-a-half of my life and that's what it's been," Baun said. "It's been hard. It's really been all I think about lately." Baun's goal for the 2019 football season - which saw the Badgers post a 10-4 record and play in the Rose Bowl - was to put himself in a position to be drafted. He didn't have a round or selection in mind, but he wanted his senior year to be good enough to hear his name called. He proceeded to have one of the best seasons in UW history as a pass rusher. His 12½ sacks last year are third-most in a single season by a Badger, and he tallied 76 total tackles, an interception for a touchdown and two forced fumbles. He became the first UW linebacker to earn consensus All-American honors. - Wisconsin State Journal

The Ducks say they haven't seen anybody quite like linebacker Zack Baun, who leads the Badgers with 12 1/2 sacks and 19 1/2 tackles for loss. The relentless senior has disrupted entire offenses with his all-around play, and Herbert will have to be aware of his location on every snap against coordinator Jim Leonhard's versatile defense. - AP College Football

Wisconsin is allowing 4.8 points per game on the strength of those four shutouts. The Badgers have given up a total of three points in first halves. Interestingly, a Northwestern team that ranks third to last in the nation in scoring is the one that put up the most points against them (15). Three other teams allowing single-digit points are Penn State (8.2), Oregon (8.7) and Ohio State (8.8). No defense has finished a season under 10 points per game since Alabama's in 2011. - AP College Football

Jonathan Taylor rushed for two touchdowns, Wisconsin's defense posted its fourth shutout of the season and the No. 8 Badgers cruised to a 38-0 win over Michigan State on Saturday. The Spartans' defense held Taylor to 80 yards on 26 carries, marking the first time this season the Heisman Trophy hopeful was held under 100. But Michigan State was held to 149 yards, 30 rushing, and couldn't find any rhythm as the Badgers dominated time of possession 39:10 to 20:50.

Jack Coan completed his first seven passes for Wisconsin (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) and finished 18 of 21 for 180 yards and a touchdown to win his eighth straight start since last season. The Spartans (4-3, 2-2) lost back-to-back games against AP top-10 Big Ten opponents. Michigan State lost at then-No. 4 Ohio State 34-10 last week. Brian Lewerke was 7 of 16 for 53 yards and an interception and sacked twice before getting pulled in the fourth quarter for backup Rocky Lombardi. Lombardi went 5 for 14 for 66 yards and was picked off by Rachad Wildgoose in the end zone late in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout for Wisconsin's top-ranked defense. Zack Baun picked off Lewerke and returned it 34 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown. The score marked the fourth by the Badgers' defense this season. The unit has only allowed four touchdowns all year. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

Wisconsin's defense hasn't dropped off a bit after losing last year's top pass rusher, Andrew Van Ginkel, to the NFL. Zack Baun, who had 2½ sacks in 25 career games before this season, is a big reason why. Responding to a challenge from coach Paul Chryst to improve his pass rush and take on a leadership role, Baun has been impressive thus far, taking the early Big Ten lead with two sacks in two games. "I'm just trying to make as many as I can, whenever they come," Baun said. "The pass rush is something that I've worked hard at, and to see it come to life like this, you love to see it."

The start of the season couldn't have gone much better for Baun and the 13th-ranked Badgers, who outscored South Florida and Central Michigan by a combined 110-0, becoming the first FBS team to score at least 100 points while allowing zero in its first two games since South Carolina in 1980. Wisconsin next faces No. 11 Michigan (2-0), which beat the Badgers 38-13 last season. "We're coming for revenge," Baun said. "Obviously, there is a standard that has been set here at Wisconsin. We all see it on the walls in the tunnel. We understand we didn't meet that standard last year. We're coming for it this year." After winning at least 10 games in each of Chryst's first three seasons, the Badgers used last year's 8-5 campaign as a learning tool — Baun especially. Baun, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker, saw his first action in 2016 as a redshirt sophomore, playing sparingly in 12 games. He missed all of 2017 with a broken left foot, and then started all 13 games last season. Baun said he spent a large portion of 2018 working back to full strength, both physically and mentally. - AP College Football
