  2019 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM (COACHES): Julian Pletz, Western Carolina,...Assuming the primary placekicking duties at mid-season, the left-footed Pletz led the Catamounts in scoring in 2019 with 40 total points. The Liberty Township, Ohio, native connected on all 16 of his point after touchdown attempts and split the uprights on 8-of-11 field goal attempts including four of 40-plus yards – booming a career-long of 44 yards three times.   2019 ALL-GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): QB Rogan Wells, Valdosta State, Jr., Fort Mill, S.C.,...Also earning his second-straight first team all-conference selection, Wells is fourth nationally in completion percentage this season at a .717 clip, while ranking 13th nationally in passing efficiency at 163.2, 23rd in completions per game at 19.00 and 17th in yards per pass attempt at 8.74 to lead the conference in each category. He is third in the league in passing yards (2,315) for 41st nationally, while ranking second in the conference in passing yards per game at a 231.5 clip for 33rd nationally.

Wells is second in the league and 38th nationally in points responsible for with 144. He is third in the league in rushing yards (680) and third in rushing yards per game (68.0). Wells is ninth nationally and leads the conference in total offense at 299.5 yards per game.   2019 GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Rogan Wells, Valdosta State,...Wells, the Blazers' redshirt junior quarterback, led them to an undefeated regular season and a second straight GSC Championship. He's thrown for 2,315 yards and 17 touchdowns, and he has a league-leading passer rating of 163.2. Wells also leads the GSC with a 71.2% completion percentage and is third in rushing with 680 yards. The 2018 Harlon Hill Trophy finalist has now been named GSC Offensive Player of the Year twice in his career.   NOV 18 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jayden Pauling, Western Carolina, R-So., LB, Raleigh, N.C.,...Western Carolina linebacker Jayden Pauling had eight tackles, seven of which were solo and two of which went for 11 lost yards, and forced three fumbles in the Catamounts' 31-13 loss to Samford on Saturday. Two of Pauling's forced fumbles came on sacks, while the third came late in the fourth quarter to halt a Samford drive. With a team-high five forced fumbles on the season, the redshirt sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, is just two shy of the program's single-season record of seven set in 1972.   Valdosta State and West Florida have qualified for the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Valdosta State earned its eighth GSC Football Championship this season, finishing the year undefeated. The Blazers' 25-game winning streak that extends back to 2017 is the longest in league history. This is the second straight year that the defending national champions are the top seed in Super Region 2. This is the fifth time in six years that VSU has advanced to the national postseason. Valdosta State has the fourth ranked total offense in the country, averaging 532.3 yards per game. Last year's Harlon Hill Trophy runner-up Rogan Wells had another remarkable year under center for the Blazers and will once again lead the playoff push. He ranks fourth in the country in completion percentage (71.7) and ninth in total offense (299.5 yards per game). As the top seed, Valdosta State has earned a bye, and will face the winner of the Wingate/West Florida matchup. The Argos will travel to Wingate and face the Bulldogs on Saturday, November 23. UWF also faced Wingate in the first round back in 2017, winning the contest 31-0. - Gulf South Football

  NOV 11 GULF SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rogan Wells, Valdosta State, Passing Yards: 350, Rushing Yards: 63, Touchdowns: 1,...Notes: Wells had an impressive game as the Blazers broke the GSC record for consecutive wins with their 24th victory since 2017 in a thrilling 26-21 win over #20 West Florida. The win also gave the Blazers at least a share of their eighth GSC Championship. This is the ninth time in his career that he has won this award, tying him for second most in league history.   NOV 11 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ty Harris, Western Carolina, Jr., LB, Dacula, Ga.,...Western Carolina linebacker Ty Harris shared game-high honors with 11 tackles, eight solo, in the Catamounts' 23-20, overtime win over ETSU on Saturday. The junior from Dacula, Georgia, counted a career-best 4.0 tackles for loss among his total, the most in a game by a SoCon player this season. Harris helped Western Carolina hold the Bucs to just 265 yards of total offense, the fewest yards the Catamounts have allowed to a Division I opponent this season. The weekly award is the first of Harris' career.   Nate Mullen scored on a 1-yard run in overtime after Western Carolina held East Tennessee State to a field goal and the Catamounts defeated the Buccaneers 23-20 on Saturday. After both teams kicked first-quarter field goals, Donnavan Spencer scored on a 44-yard run 1:41 into the second quarter and Western Carolina (3-7, 2-5 Southern Conference) led 10-3 at halftime. Quay Holmes' 4-yard touchdown run was the only scoring in the third an East Tennessee State (2-8, 0-7) pulled even.

The Catamounts grabbed the lead midway through the fourth when Tyrie Adams hooked up with Caleb Ferguson for a 22-yard TD. But the Buccaneers answered with a 14-play, 64-yard drive that took 6+ minutes off the clock and ended with Holmes running it in from 5 yards out with 91 seconds left in regulation. Adams completed 16 of 25 passes for 185 yards for Western Carolina. Spencer finished with 124 yards on the ground on 19 carries. Holmes rushed for 166 yards on 36 carries for ETSU.   Tyrie Adams threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns, Donnavan Spencer rushed for 137 yards and two scores, and Western Carolina held off VMI 43-35 on Saturday. Spencer's 42-yard touchdown run gave the Catamounts (2-7, 1-5 Southern Conference) a 37-22 lead with 8:06 remaining in the game. VMI (4-5, 3-3) rallied, first scoring on a 10-yard pass from Reece Udinski to Jakob Herres, then a 62-yard hookup from Udinski to Leroy Thomas. Now leading 37-35, Western Carolina ran out the final 3:10 on the clock. However, with 4th-and-1 at the VMI 42 and needing one play to seal the game, Adams threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Daquan Patten on the final play.

Adams and Spencer connected on a 78-yard TD pass and Adams also hit D.J. Thorpe for a 13-yard score for a 14-13 Western Carolina lead after one quarter and the Catamounts went on to lead 20-19 at halftime. Spencer and Patten both went over 100 yards receiving, with 110 yards and 103 yards, respectively. Western Carolina had 539 total yards. Udinski finished 23-of-31 passing with two touchdowns and an interception for VMI. Ramsey had 29 carries for 143 rushing yards with three touchdowns and Herres caught seven passes for 105 yards. - AP College Football

  Citing a violation of team policies and standards, Western Carolina suspended four players, including starting quarterback Tyrie Adams, for Saturday's game at N.C. State. Adams, the preseason Southern Conference offensive player of the year, was replaced by sophomore Will Jones in the starting lineup. Also suspended were starting left offensive guard Matthew Bair, starting nose tackle Adam Henderson, and reserve defensive lineman Elijah Hall. The suspended players did not travel with the team.
