2020 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL THIRD TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): RB - Khalil Herbert, Virginia Tech, 109,...The first Tech player to gain 1,000 yards rushing since 2015, Herbert, nicknamed 'Juice' led the Hokies' potent rushing attack with 1,182 yards on the ground on 154 attempts. His 7.68 yards per carry ranked second in the conference and sixth nationally. After going for 100 or more yards in each of his first four games for the Hokies, Hebert finished the season with six such efforts after totaling 162 yards and a TD against Virginia (12/12). He had a season-best 207 rushing yards at Duke (10/10) as part of his record- breaking day that saw him accumulate 357 all-purpose yards. - Virginia Tech Football

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt won't be coming back for a sixth season. The NCAA granted all fall student-athletes an extra year of eligibility in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Hewitt declared for the NFL Draft on Saturday night with a post on social media. Fellow Tech defenders Justus Reed, Rayshard Ashby and Divine Deablo have made similar announcements in recent weeks. Hewitt said coming back had "crossed his mind" when he spoke to reporters on Dec. 1, but was waiting until after the season to make a final decision. The defender was a three-year starter for Tech - he only missed two games the last three years - and finished his collegiate career with 92 tackles (42 solo) with 17.5 for a loss and 9.5 sacks. - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech linebacker Rayshard Ashby declared for the NFL Draft on Thursday. Ashby was a senior, but he could have come back for a fifth year with the NCAA giving all fall student-athletes an additional year of eligibility this season in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The linebacker announced the decision with a lengthy thank-you letter to fans on social media. Ashby was a three-year starter for Tech at middle linebacker. He finished his career with 294 tackles (156 solo) - he led the team in tackling in 2018 and 2019 - with 34 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and five forced fumbles. - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech offensive lineman Christian Darrisaw is headed to the NFL. Many NFL draft analysts are projecting the 6-foot-5, 314-pound junior to be a first round pick. The junior posted a lengthy message to fans on social media outlining his decision on Friday. Darrisaw only missed two games in his career - he started 34 of the team's last 36 games the last three years - and was named honorable mention All-ACC in 2019. Former wide receiver Holmon Wiggins was instrumental in bringing Darrisaw to the attention of Tech's coaching staff. "It got to a point where I was like this dude is a no-brainer," Wiggins told The Roanoke Times in 2018. "We knew he was going to be a little green from the standpoint of playing the position, but he's big, he's athletic, he's strong and when he starts to figure it out it can be scary how good he can be."

After a brief stint at Fork Union, Darrisaw arrived in Blacksburg for the 2018 season and immediately earned the starting job. He shut down talented Florida State defensive end Brian Burns in his debut. Burns finished second in the league that year with 10 sacks. Tech's staff continually praised Darrisaw's consistency and his toughness. "He has been an absolute warrior," Fuente said earlier this season. "He basically played over a half a year on one foot a couple years ago." - Roanoke Times

2020 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): WR Jadan Blue, Temple,...Blue led the receiving corps for the Owls this year, leading the team in all major statistical categories. Blue finished the season with 41 receptions totaling 381 receiving yards and five touchdowns, while also handling kick return duties. The redshirt junior recorded at least four receptions in every game this season. Blue had back-to-back standout games against USF (9-60-2) and Memphis (13-120-3) in which he tied his career-high in receptions and set a new career-high in receiving TDs, making him the first Temple receiver to have 3 or more receiving TDs in a single game since Robby Anderson did so in 2013. For the season, Blue ranked second in the conference in receptions per game (6.8) while also ranking in the top five in touchdowns per game (0.8). - Temple Football

The free year implemented for the 2020 season has opened the door for current seniors across the country to return for the 2021 season. However, many are declining to do so with Justus Reed publicly doing so earlier this week and Oscar Bradburn following in his footsteps. Bradburn has had a solid senior season with an average of 43 yards per punt, the second best in his career, to go with 17 of 37 punts being fair caught and 12 punts being downed inside the 20. - Tech Lunch Pail

Khalil Herbert ran for 162 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown, and Virginia Tech ended a four-game slide with a 33-15 victory against rival Virginia on Saturday night. The Hokies (5-6, 5-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) also got a big play from Tayvion Robinson, who turned a short pass from Braxton Burmeister into a 60-yard TD, a scoring run from wide receiver Tre Turner and four field goals from Brian Johnson to regain the Commonwealth Cup. Virginia (5-5, 4-5) had its four-game win streak end. The Cavaliers drove 75 yards for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead with their first possession, but managed just 71 yards the rest of the half while the Hokies scored all five times they had the ball to lead 27-7 at halftime.

Turner's 6-yard run capped a 17-play drive to give the Hokies a 10-7 lead, and after Johnson's second field goal and a Virginia punt, Herbert bolted off the right side and raced untouched down the center of the field for his longest run of the season. On Virginia Tech's next possession, with halftime looming, Burmeister hit Robinson along the Hokies sideline, he spun away from cornerback De'Vante Cross and raced down the sideline, scoring 31 seconds before the half. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Virginia Tech and Khalil Herbert were absolutely dominating this aspect of games earlier this season. Herbert ran for 592 yards in his first four games, before suffering a hamstring injury. He's had just 428 yards in the six games since. But in Saturday's loss to Clemson, Herbert ran for 96 yards and a score. If center Brock Hoffman can lead the offensive line without committing major penalties, this can be a dominant unit again. - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Virginia Tech defensive end Justus Reed's lengthy collegiate career will come to an end this month. The Hokies host Virginia on Saturday at Lane Stadium in their regular season finale and there's a chance the team could get invited to a bowl game, but Reed has already made up his mind. "This is it," Reed said, with a smile on Tuesday. "This is my last go around. It's been a long time. I thought about it at the beginning of the year a little bit, but this is it. Seven is enough for me." Reed, who signed with Virginia Tech in April as a grad transfer from Youngstown State, had the chance to play in 2021 with the NCAA granting all fall athletes an additional year of eligibility. His career began back in 2014 as a freshman signee out of Central Catholic High School at Florida. He redshirted that season and missed most of the 2016 season with a knee injury before transferring to the FCS level.

He suffered another injury setback in 2018 - a torn achilles forced him to miss the entire season - but he bounced back 13 sacks and 19 tackles for loss the next year. The NCAA granted him two years of additional eligibility when he applied for a medical waiver before the season. Reed has 26 tackles this season (16 solo) with a team-high 6.5 sacks and seven quarterback hurries. "I think I've played alright," Reed said. "I got lost a little bit in the middle of the season, but picked it up towards the end. I feel like I've played pretty well for the most part just getting to know the defense more and playing instead of thinking of trying to force plays. That's helped me a lot the last half of the season...I'm happy with my decision and really blessed to be here and the opportunity to come here." - Roanoke Times

Wells has been one of the catalysts to Marshall's 7-0 start, leading a much-more balanced offense in 2020 than last season. He has completed 65.6 percent of his passes (126 of 192) for 1,674 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Wells' ability to manage the game has impressed the Herd coaching staff in his first season. Not only has Wells limited his turnovers, but he's also led Marshall to one of the nation's top third-down conversion percentages, which has kept drives moving downfield. While there has been success, Marshall offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey also has instilled the mentality of continued growth and never being satisfied into Wells. "We'll never arrive," Cramsey said. "We'll never be where we have to be, and that's just the mentality you have to have in life and as a football player." Despite the discussions taking place six days apart, Wells almost spoke his position coach's words verbatim while talking with media on Tuesday. "We haven't arrived and, to be honest, I don't think we'll ever arrive," Wells said. "That's the point of playing this game. You're always chasing perfection." - Charleston Gazette

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente doesn't sound optimistic about defensive back Jermaine Waller coming back for the team's final two games. The Hokies face Clemson on Dec. 5 at Lane Stadium after a bye week then host Virginia on Dec. 12 in the team's regular season finale. Waller hasn't played since the team's loss to Liberty - his would be game-winning touchdown on a blocked field goal was waived off - and that was only his second start of the season. He has 10 tackles (eight solo) and one pass breakup. "I don't know," Fuente said, when asked if Waller would return. "I don't know if he will be able to come back or not. He's working hard and diligently to get his body feeling better. I just don't know. The door is still open, but I don't know if he will be able to go or not."

Tech was expected to have one of the top cornerback pairings in the country this season with Caleb Farley and Waller, but it hasn't worked out that way. Farley opted out before the team opened fall camp and Waller has been sidelined all year with injuries. The junior had offseason surgery to repair a fractured bone in his foot that he played with last season. His rehab continued into fall camp and forced him to miss Tech's first two games. He made his debut against North Carolina, but suffered an arm injury late in the game. - Roanoke Times

Suspended Virginia Tech safety Devon Hunter made his initial court appearance Thursday and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Hunter appeared before Judge Robert Viar in the Montgomery Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court as a result of his arrest in September on multiple assault charges. Viar accepted the request and the case will be presented to a grand jury Jan. 26. Before signing an affidavit acknowledging he understood the request, Hunter made the sign of the cross. He was represented by Patrick Kenney, a Roanoke attorney, and accompanied at the hearing by his mother. Kenney declined to comment on the case after the hearing. Hunter was arrested Sept. 13 on charges of felony strangulation to cause wound or injury and misdemeanor assault against a family member. - Roanoke Times

Saturday was a special game for Marshall University's football team for many reasons. Obviously, the 42-14 win over Middle Tennessee fell on the date of the 1970 Marshall plane crash, giving the Thundering Herd a fitting tribute to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the greatest sports tragedy in history. In looking at the contest, however, it may remembered in the future for another side note that seems vital to the Herd's future. On Saturday, quarterback Grant Wells took a major step from being a game manager for a veteran offense to taking the team on his back en route to a win. Middle Tennessee loaded the box to take away reigning Conference USA Most Valuable Player Brenden Knox and Marshall's rushing attack, but Wells' precision made the Blue Raiders pay consistently.

"That's the next step that we've taken as an offense," Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said. "When people take certain things away, then we've got to be able to execute, win on the outside and throw the ball around a little bit, which we did." Wells said the rushing attack and passing attack are built to make each aspect stronger as a collective. "The run opens up the pass and the pass opens up the run," Wells said. "If the run isn't hitting for 15 or 10 a play, we're going to have to start hitting them deep and start throwing the ball to open the run game. When one's not working, we've got to rely on the pass a little bit more." - Charleston Gazette

Virginia Tech linebacker Keshon Artis and defensive end Zion Debose have opted out of the 2020 season with three games left to play. They were two of the 11 players listed as unavailable against Miami on Saturday. "The conversation with them was like, classes are going to go all online at Thanksgiving and they would, I would imagine, just stay home," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said Monday. Artis has been a stand out special teams player this season for the Hokies and wore Frank Beamer's No. 25 jersey against Louisville. The third-year sophomore had three tackles (two solo) in seven games this season. The linebacker played in four games last season before deciding to redshirt with limited playing time available at his position behind Rayshard Ashby. Debose has been in and out of the lineup this season. After playing in the season-opener against Boston College, he missed three of Tech's next four games. He had six tackles (one solo) and a sack this season. The fourth-year junior missed the entire 2019 season after suffering a foot injury during fall camp. - Roanoke Times
