Virginia Tech announced Tuesday that safety Devon Hunter has been reinstated to the football team. Hunter was suspended in September after he was arrested on charges of felony strangulation to cause wound or injury and misdemeanor assault against a famil y member. The felony was amended to a misdemeanor when Hunter pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Circuit Court on May 4. He was convicted of the two misdemeanors and sentenced to 24 months in jail, but the jail time was suspended to one day on each char ge, and two years probation. According to Tech's student-athlete code of conduct, an athlete with a felony charge can't be reinstated until, "until the charges are dropped, dismissed or otherwise resolved." The athletic department also needed Hunter to g et through the discipline process outlined in the university's code of conduct for the general student body before weighing in. - Roanoke Times

Suspended Virginia Tech defender Devon Hunter's case is moving forward. A trial is set in Montgomery County Circuit Court for Aug. 30-31, according to his attorney Patrick Kenney. Kenney declined to comment on the case. A grand jury in January indicted H unter on a felony charge of strangulation to cause wound or injury. Hunter is also facing a separate misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member charge, but that's considered an ancillary misdemeanor and will move forward in the same manner as the felony offense. - Roanoke Times

His next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 19. In Virginia, a Class 6 felony is punishable by a maxi mum of five years in prison. He declined to be more specific about the infraction during a Zoom call with local reporters, other than to say the suspension was a stunning development. A felony triggers an automatic suspension, according to Virginia Tech's code of cond uct. Hunter was among the program's most highly regarded recruits, committing to the Hokies with the enticement of playing for legendary defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
