  09/06/25 - Eli HolsteinrSo/2028, Virginia, 6-3, 225 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Eli Holstein passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair to Raphael Williams Jr. as Pittsburgh surged past Central Michigan 45-17 on Saturday. Holstein hit Williams for a 3-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The two connected again on a pretty 48-yard score late in the third to give the Panthers (2-0) some breathing room after the Chippewas had drawn within seven. Williams later hauled in a 40-yard grab that set up Juelz Goff's 2-yard touchdown run as Pitt avoided the upset after Central Michigan (1-1) hung around deep into the third quarter. Williams finished with six receptions for 121 yards and the two scores.

Holstein completed 21 of 28 but wasn't perfect. He was picked off for the second time in as many weeks when Central Michigan's Jordan Kwiatkowski had an interception that allowed the Chippewas to pull within 24-10 late in the first half. Central Michigan (1-1) got within 24-17 late in the third quarter when Joe Labas found Decorin Temple for a 6-yard touchdown at the end of a long drive in which the Chippewas converted a pair of fourth downs. Pitt responded immediately. Kenny Johnson's 47-yard kickoff return gave the Panthers good field position and two plays later Holstein made a perfect pass while on the run to Williams to restore Pitt's lead to 14. Central Michigan's three-quarterback rotation of Labas, Jadyn Glasser and Angel Flores combined to go 20 of 27 for 177 yards, but the Chippewas couldn't duplicate a second straight impressive road win after knocking off San Jose State last weekend in first-year coach Matt Drinkall's debut. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  08/30/25 - Chandler MorrisrSr/2026, Virginia, 6-0, 192 (DS#27 QB) + More +

Virginia starting quarterback Chandler Morris suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit early in the third quarter of the Cavaliers' season-opener against Coastal Carolina. Morris, the North Texas transfer and son of former Arkansas and SMU coach Chad Morris, broke free on a run and opted against sliding, instead juking a defender and getting to the Coastal 2. That's where he collided with Chanticleers' cornerback Myles Mooyoung. Morris stayed down for a few minutes, before being helped to the sideline, where he entered the UVA medical tent.

A few minutes after that, Virginia staffers escorted Morris toward the team's locker room. The exact nature of Morris' injury is not known. Morris returned to the sidelines in the fourth quarter, his left shoulder wrapped heavily with ice. Nebraska transfer Daniel Kaelin, who had never thrown a college pass, entered the game for Morris. The Cavaliers don't have an experienced backup. Only short-yardage specialist Grady Brosterhous has a collegiate pass on his resume. - AP College Football

  08/30/25 - Cam RossrSr/2026, Virginia, 5-10, 186 (DS#70 WR) + More +

Cam Ross had 124 receiving yards and a touchdown catch and ran a kickoff back 100 yards for another score and Virginia rolled past Coastal Carolina, 48-7 in its season opener on Saturday night at Scott Stadium. Quarterback Chandler Morris threw for 264 yards and two scores before exiting the game with an injury early in the third quarter. The two teams featured massively rebuilt rosters. Virginia had over 50 new players and Coastal more than 60. For the home team, many of those new names showed up in a big way, including Ross, Morris and transfer running back J'Mari Taylor, who scored a pair of touchdowns.

All six of Virginia's touchdowns came from transfers, who made a strong first impression on the announced crowd of 46,143. Coastal Carolina didn't find the same success with its transfer quarterback. MJ Morris, who has played at North Carolina State and Maryland, finished 20 for 36 for 163. Running back Ja'Vin Simpkins was the only Coastal player to find the end zone, scoring on an 8-yard run in the third quarter. Virginia outgained Coastal, 454-254. - AP College Football

  08/30/25 - Eli HolsteinrSo/2028, Virginia, 6-3, 225 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Eli Holstein threw a career-high four touchdown passes, including two to sophomore wide receiver Cataurus Hicks, and Pittsburgh eased past crosstown rival Duquesne 61-9 on Saturday. Desmond Reid returned a punt 88 yards for a score and added another on a 53-yard sprint as the Panthers (1-0) made sure the Dukes (0-1) never threatened to pull a stunner in the renewal of the “City Game” following an 85-year hiatus. Holstein, whose breakout freshman season a year ago was blunted by injuries that contributed to Pitt's second-half freefall, completed 15 of 23 passes for 215 yards and ran for another 41.

While the Panthers weren't particularly sharp early on - Pitt's first drive ended with a punt and its third with Holstein throwing a pass that was picked off by Duquesne's Dallas Harper - they eventually wore down the Dukes with their depth and their significant advantage at the line of scrimmage. Pitt reached the end zone on four straight drives spanning the end of the second quarter and the start of the third. Hicks, part of a group of receivers trying to establish themselves alongside Kenny Johnson, hauled in a 4-yard pass from Holstein for a score then later needed just one arm to corral a 16-yard rainbow from Holstein for another. Duquesne's Tyler Riddell passed for 154 yards and a 7-yard score to B.J. Alexander. Joey Isabella caught eight passes for a game-high 120 yards as the Dukes, who play in the smallest stadium in the FCS (Rooney Field, which has a capacity of just over 2,000) had a couple of moments to remember while playing at Acrisure Stadium (capacity 68,400). - AP College Football

  08/28/25 - Beau PribularJr/2027, Virginia, 6-2, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Beau Pribula staked his claim to Missouri's starting quarterback job with a four-touchdown performance as the Tigers rolled to a 61-7 season-opening thrashing of Central Arkansas Thursday night. Pribula, a transfer portal addition from Penn State, finished 23-of-28 passing for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He notched another 65 yards and two scores on the ground. The Tigers put up 560 yards of offense in the victory. Missouri opened the scoring on their third offensive play of the game, a 49-yard-deep ball from Pribula to Marquis Johnson, who led the team with 134 yards receiving. Running back Ahmad Hardy, the 2024 Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year transfer from Louisiana Monroe, rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Missouri took a 26-0 lead after the half after embarking on a 15-play, 99-yard drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown pass from Pribula to tight end Brett Norfleet. Central Arkansas tallied 229 yards of offense, with Luther Richesson 12-of-22 passing for 70 yards. Landen Chambers chipped in 63 yards rushing. Missouri planned for Pribula to share playing time with redshirt junior Sam Horn, but Horn suffered a knee injury on his first snap of the game. Pribula led a second 99-yard drive on seven plays midway through the third quarter, extending the lead to 40-0 before handing the reins to true freshman Matt Zollers. Zollers finished 3-of-3 passing for 58 yards and a touchdown. - Missouri/AP College Football

Chandler Morris threw for 415 yards with three touchdowns and he added two rushing scores to help North Texas defeat South Alabama 52-38 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. The game was the debut for Major Applewhite as head coach of South Alabama. North Texas erupted for 38 points in the second half and did not punt after halftime. Among the scores was a blocked punt by Juwaun Price that CJ Garnett recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Damon Ward Jr. had 230 yards on 12 receptions, and he scored on a 3-yard reception in the second quarter and a 54-yarder in the third. Morris completed 32 of 41 passes.

South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez went 26 of 49 for 432 yards with three touchdowns. He also carried it 13 times for 62 yards and a score. Jamaal Pritchett had 10 catches for 197 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown for South Alabama. The teams combined for 1,132 yards of offense - 550 yards for North Texas and 582 for South Alabama. South Alabama led 19-14 after stopping North Texas on downs at the 1-yard line in the final minute of the first half. The Mean Green scored on every possession thereafter. On Sept. 7, South Alabama visits Ohio and North Texas hosts Stephen F. Austin. - AP College Football

  08/31/24 - Eli HolsteinrSo/2028, Virginia, 6-3, 225 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Redshirt freshman Eli Holstein threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns and running back Desmond Reid scored twice as Pittsburgh and its new-look offense opened the season with a 55-24 win over Kent State on Saturday. Holstein, a transfer from Alabama, completed 29 of 39 passes while efficiently operating first-year offensive coordinator Kade Bell's uptempo system. Holstein hit Kenny Johnson, Konata Mumpfield and Raphael Williams for scores as the Panthers eventually pulled away from the Golden Flashes. Reid, who followed Bell from Western Carolina to Pitt, put together a dazzling 78-yard punt return for a score in the first quarter. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Reid also sprinted up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown while racking up 231 all-purpose yards as the Panthers moved the ball at will for most of the afternoon.

Pitt rolled up 554 yards of total offense, an encouraging debut coming off a 3-9 season in which the Panthers finished last in the ACC in points and yards. Those struggles led longtime Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi to hire the 31-year-old Bell to bring the Panthers into the 21st century. The early returns were promising. Holstein made a series of nice anticipatory throws. Devin Kargman passed for 181 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Golden Flashes, who hung around into the second half. Naim Muhammad returned a fumbled punt 36 yards for a score, Alex Branch picked off Holstein in the end zone to end a Pitt scoring threat and when Kargman hit Luke Floriea with a 29-yard strike early in the third quarter, Kent State was within 28-21. - AP College Football

  03/09/23 - Mitchell MeltonrSr/2026, Virginia, 6-3, 258 (DS#33 DE) + More +

Defensive lineman Mitchell Melton has been medically cleared to participate in individual drills for Ohio State during spring practice. But Melton, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament in last year's spring game and missed the season as a result, is expected to remain limited to individual work for at least a majority of the practices over the next five weeks. "We've just got to be smart," Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said, "and bring him back the right way." As seen by reporters during a half-hour viewing period as spring practice opened Tuesday, Melton went through a series of drills with the defensive linemen.

A versatile edge defender, Melton enrolled at Ohio State in 2020 as a linebacker before moving to the defensive line last year. His all-around skillset made him a candidate to line up at the "Jack" position, the hybrid defensive end-linebacker role, before he went down last April. "We're hoping he can make an impact for us this year," Day said. "Before the injury, we were excited about him and what he was doing. He's got a really good pass-rush ability and good strength and play speed." - Columbus Dispatch

  03/05/23 - Tony MuskettrSr/2025, Virginia, 6-1, 213 (DS#46 QB) + More +

Upon his choice to depart FCS Monmouth and test whether or not the transfer portal would yield interest from the top level of the sport, Tony Muskett said he always had a frontrunner in mind. "It was top of my list. It's my home school. It's my home state," the now-Virginia quarterback said Thursday. Muskett is in the midst of readying for spring practice with the Cavaliers, who he grew up watching and even through his high school days while starring at West Springfield in Northern Virginia would've liked to play for if the circumstances were right. He had the chance to join the Hoos then, too, he said. According to Muskett, UVa's pursuit of him as a transfer in December wasn't the program's first time courting the quarterback. Former UVa staffer Donte Wilkins - in the Cavaliers' recruiting department then and now the defensive line coach at Lafayette - recruited Muskett and presented him a spot on the roster.

"But I had already committed to Monmouth, so I wanted to honor my commitment," said Muskett, whose lone FBS scholarship offer as a high schooler was from Coastal Carolina. He said at the time, he never could've imagined an opportunity to play for UVa would come his way again. "Because coming out of high school, the transfer portal wasn't nearly as big as it is now," Muskett said, "and I just tried to focus on the present. I tried to be where my feet are." That strategy worked well for the 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal-caller. Muskett was a two-time first-team All-Big South choice with the Hawks and finished his 23-game stay with Monmouth having thrown for 5,687 yards and 51 touchdowns. His tear through the Big South - before the Hawks' conference switch to the Colonial Athletic Association this past fall - didn't go unnoticed. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  03/03/23 - Malik WashingtonrSr/2024, Virginia, 5-09, 191 (DS#16 WR) + More +

Virginia is filling a void on the fly, and the Cavaliers are hoping Malik Washington allows them to do so effectively. He's the much-needed veteran wide receiver they added to an extremely inexperienced unit of pass-catchers. "It's something I embrace," Washington said, "because it's a role I've had almost my entire life. I'm someone who people are comfortable being around, so I want to make sure I continue that as I take my journey to UVa." "I think it was so important because we do have a young group," first-year UVa wide receivers coach Adam Mims said about securing the commitment and enrollment of Washington, who is already in Charlottesville ahead of spring practice, which begins later this month.

"We have a group of guys who are essentially unproven," Mims said, "so, having an older guy who has shown success and production, I think that's going to help us in the long run. Not only on the field, but off the field, too." Washington spent the first four years of his career at Northwestern, where his 65 receptions this past fall were the sixth most for any Big Ten receiver. Over 40 total games with the Wildcats, he logged 120 catches for 1,348 yards. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  03/01/23 - Kam ButlerrSr/2025, Virginia, 6-3, 267 (DS#66 DE) + More +

Senior defensive end Kam Butler expressed a similar sentiment and said "absolutely" UVa is capable of changing its trajectory for the better. Butler joined the Cavaliers last season as a graduate transfer from Miami (Ohio) and is only back for 2023 because he's taking advantage of the extra year the NCAA granted UVa players whose eligibility would've expired after this past fall. The NCAA made that ruling on the heels of the November shooting, which tragically killed former Cavaliers Lavel Davis Jr., D'Sean Perry and Devin Chandler.

Butler's original plan prior to gaining the sixth year in college football, he said, was to finish his master's degree in higher education this spring while simultaneously training for the NFL with UVa's strength coaches. For now, he's gladly put the pro dream on hold. "I wanted to get back with the team," he said. "I started building some great relationships with people off the field on the administrative side of things for the athletic department and I wanted to build on those relationships going forward, too, and I like the strength staff here. I like the coaching staff here, so I feel like it would've been weird to not come back or not right for me to go somewhere else." His sense is there are enough returning players with experience to enforce the practice habits and expectations Elliott introduced to the Hoos last year as well as to teach coordinator John Rudzinski's defense, which the Cavaliers improved while using last year, to new additions on the team. Most notably, the defensive line is filled with fourth-, fifth- and sixth-year players with Butler and Aaron Faumui, Chico Bennett Jr., Jahmeer Carter and Paul Akere. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
