Wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. already had one breakout campaign as a freshman in 2020, but is in need of another after missing all of last season with an ACL injury. The 6-foot-7, 224-pounder averaged 25.8 yards per catch two years ago and is a big-play threat. The next few weeks will be important for him as he tries to find his place in a position group featuring Wicks, Keytaon Thompson and Billy Kemp. "Lavel seems like he's in a better place mentally, and physically, he looks better," than the spring, Kitchings said, "… so he's about a year and a half removed [from the injury], so he's moving around better and has got little more confidence in it. We've got these 30 practices and hopefully he'll be better going into Richmond than he is right now." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

With Elliott at the helm and new offensive coordinator Des Kitchings in place, the Cavaliers are seeking to better their balance on offense, which means a likely increased commitment to the run game is coming. They have better depth than they did this past spring, so UVa could potentially deploy a rotation at the position. But there's also the thought that one rusher could emerge as a standout, and according to running backs coach Keith Gaither, junior Mike Hollins possesses the skill set.

"I think Mike could be an every-down back," Gaither said. "It just depends if he continues to take the next step in his game. He's a good back now, but we need him to take his game from good to great, but the only way to do it is great practice habits. He hasn't learned that yet. He will, but he has the ability to be the every-down back if he buys in and truly immerses himself in this offense and in every aspect of becoming the best player he can be." Hollins, a Baton Rouge, La. native, averaged 4.3 yards per carry and scored two rushing touchdowns a season ago in a limited role. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Virginia's group of running backs is deeper than it was during the spring, and the Cavaliers could get another boost sooner than they expected. "Ronnie Walker [Jr.] looks good," UVa coach Tony Elliott said of his fifth-year running back who was putting together an excellent set of practices in March before suffering a leg injury. "He's ahead of schedule," running backs coach Keith Gaither said.

According to Gaither, Walker Jr. was slated for an October return, but is on track now for late September. Last season, Walker Jr. carried the ball five times for 32 yards and two scores. It was his second year with the Cavaliers after transferring from Indiana, where he showed promise as a freshman in 2018 and rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns. "He'll still be down for fall camp," Elliott said. "He's not quite where he needs to be yet from a change-of-direction standpoint, but looks good straight ahead." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Virginia wide receiver Malachi Fields (6-4, 218) has a broken bone in his foot and won't participate in fall camp. Said coach Tom Elliott: 'Malachi is not going to be with us in terms of practicing this fall camp. He broke a bone in his foot and had to have surgery." The tall wideout only caught 11 passes for 172 yards in 2021, but was primed to make a jump up the depth chart in his second season with a strong fall camp. Fields will work to get healthy by the time the season rolls around, but Wisconsin transfer Devin Chandler and senior Hayden Mitchell should get more reps in his absence. - JerryRatcliffe.com

A former quarterback who earned his undergrad degree from Mississippi State, Keytaon Thompson has gone all-in on becoming the best receiver he can be. New UVa coach Tony Elliott has made that easier. An ex-wideout himself, Elliott has been relentless in his critiques of the 6-foot-4, 217-pound New Orleans native. "The biggest area I've seen him grow is just accepting the challenge to become a technician at the position," Elliott said. "I already know you are a great football player. You have a great football mind. He started as a quarterback. He just has that sense. He has that knack. Now can we add the technical aspect of it to complete your game? "He has everything he needs to be dominant and successful at this level, but I desire for him to accomplish his goals beyond the University of Virginia, and I don't just want him to get to the NFL. I want him to stay in the NFL. He needs to just continue to improve the small technical aspects, because he has all the big things." Thompson admits he was a bit perplexed when every rep in practice was met with criticism.

He led UVa receivers with 78 catches in 2021 while finishing just 10 yards shy of becoming the sixth player in school history to post a 1,000-yard receiving season. But the finer points - route-running, sinking the hips just before the break, blocking - all get called out when he doesn't do them. "At first, I was kind of confused, like, 'What does this guy want from me? Is he serious?'" Thompson said of Elliott. "But I eventually was able to catch onto it, change my perspective and really benefit." Thompson's rare size and catch radius create mismatches against every team UVa will play this fall. But there's also his intelligence, forged through experience and a career filled with adaptation. - Roanoke Times

Averaging a whopping 21 yards per catch last season, Wicks is a big-play threat waiting to happen and can get open at any level of the field. With speed for days and soft hands, Wicks wins over a variety of coverage defenders all the same.   Growing up, D'Sean Perry always had a love of art. He spent free time drawing and painting as a youngster, got into ceramics in high school, and became a studio art major at Virginia. Most recently, the UVa junior linebacker has been tackling digital art projects, computer designs and even a 3D printer project. Now, Perry's passion for art is intersecting with teammate Jack Camper's new business venture, as both look to take advantage of college athletics' new name, image and likeness opportunities. Camper, a transfer defensive end from Michigan State, and two childhood friends from his native Virginia Beach, have launched College Cards NFTs, a company that helps college athletes mint non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, then sell them to the public.

"The NFT is open ended," said Perry, who is one of the first Virginia teammates to connect with Camper's new company. "It has unlimited freedom to do, honestly, whatever you want." Camper, who transferred to UVa this spring to be closer to his family, but sat out practice while rehabbing an upper body injury, founded College Cards with David Scherrer, a former distance runner at Brown and Boston College, and Jacob Boynewicz, a former lacrosse player at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Embarking on his third school in three years, Daniel Sparks is eagerly seeking to recapture some of the same the feel that unlocked the success during his first stop. Sparks, a transfer punter with four seasons of eligibility remaining, committed to Virginia on Tuesday night and will join the Cavaliers next month in preparation for their nearing campaign. "What it came down to was they have a really good situation for me," Sparks said Wednesday morning, "and I absolutely love the coaches." Sparks said he visited UVa last weekend and was able to meet special teams coordinator Keith Gaither as well as special teams analyst Drew Meyer, who served as Sparks' lead recruiter.

Meyer punted in college at Wisconsin, and Sparks said he appreciates that UVa has someone on staff that can relate to everything he's going through during the course of a season. Sparks spent last year at Minnesota, where he didn't see any action, but began his career at Louisiana-Monroe, where his 44.6 yards per punt during his rookie season was the second-best average in the Sun Belt Conference in 2020. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Lehigh freshman offensive lineman Andrew Canelas announced his commitment to transferring to the UVa football program for the upcoming season on Saturday. On Sunday, Georgetown graduate senior right tackle Mac Hollensteiner confirmed he'd be returning to the Hoyas for his fifth season, instead of joining the Cavaliers this fall. Canelas, a 6-foot-9, 315-pound Durham, N.C. native, did not see any playing time as a freshman in 2021. He reportedly had offers from UVa, Virginia Tech, Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State, among others, coming out of high school. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Earlier this week, South Carolina transfer defensive lineman Devontae Davis announced his commitment to Virginia. He'll play out his final season of eligibility with the Hoos this fall. "I met with Coach [Tony] Elliott. I met with [defensive tackles coach Kevin] Downing," Davis said of his recent visit to UVa, "and when we sat down and talked, I really liked what they had going on. I liked the direction they were going in and it seemed to be for me." Davis said he plans to arrive in Charlottesville next week in order to settle in ahead of the Cavaliers' May 31 report date for summer strength and conditioning drills. And when Davis officially steps on grounds, he'll commence the last go-around in a six-year career that started at Georgia Military College. Davis played a pair of seasons for the Bulldogs, and in 2018 he had a breakout fall when he racked up 30 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks over 10 games. He was rated then as the third-best defensive end in the junior college ranks by 247Sports. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
