Rodney Hammond ran for a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown while filling in for injured Israel Abanikanda and Pittsburgh shut down No. 22 Syracuse 17-9 on Saturday to end a two-game losing streak. The Panthers (5-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) relied heavily on Hammond and a defense that kept Orange freshman quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson in check in his first career start. Pitt sacked Del Rio-Wilson six times and limited the Orange (6-3, 3-2) to 145 total yards in beating Syracuse for the 18th time in the past 21 meetings of the longtime rivals.

C'Bo Flemister added a short touchdown run for Pitt as the defending ACC champions righted themselves after three losses in four games essentially ended any shot of them earning a second straight trip to the conference title game. Though quarterback Kedon Slovis failed to throw a touchdown pass for a fourth straight game - the USC transfer completed 16 of 23 for 178 yards and an ill-advised heave into the end zone in the first quarter that ended as an interception - Hammond and Flemister made up for it while doing a pretty solid Abanikanda impersonation. Hammond began the season expecting to split carries with Abanikanda only to get hurt during the season opener against West Virginia. Abanikanda took firm hold of the starting job in Hammond's absence, becoming the ACC's leading rusher in the process. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  11/05/22 - Asher OHararSr/2023, Sacramento State, 5-11, 196 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Asher O'Hara ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and undefeated Sacramento State beat Weber State 33-30 on Saturday in a meeting of FCS top-10 teams. After O'Hara went in from the 1-yard line for a 30-14 lead to open the fourth quarter, Abraham Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards - his third 100-yard return this season - but a two-point conversion failed and the Hornets' lead was 10. The teams exchanged field goals with Kyle Sentkowski's 43-yarder with just under two minutes left providing the winning cushion after Weber State's Bronson Barron scored on a keeper with 16 seconds remaining.

O'Hara was 10-of-13 passing for 162 yards and a touchdown. Jake Dunniway added another touchdown toss. Marshel Martin had both TD catches. O'Hara rushed for 81 yards on 25 carries with two short touchdown runs for the Hornets (9-0, 6-0 Big Sky), ranked third in the coaches poll. Barron was 15-of-38 passing for 153 yards and two TDs and an interception plus his rushing TD in the game's final seconds for the Wildcats (7-2, 4-2), ranked sixth. Sacramento State is off to the best start in program history and is a win short for tying the program record for victories in a season (10 in 1998). The Hornets have won 17 straight Big Sky games. - Sacramento State/AP College Football

Cameron Skattebo had 111 yards rushing on 13 carries for Sacramento State (7-0, 4-0 Big Sky) - ranked No. 3 in the FCS coaches and off to its best start in program history. Montana, No. 7 in the FCS, failed to convert a fourth-and-8 on its ensuing possession. Kyle Sentkowski kicked a 27-yard field goal that trimmed the Hornets' deficit to 24-17 with 5:54 left in regulation and Sacramento State recovered the ensuing onside kick, which set up a 4-yard touchdown run by O'Hara about 2 1/2 minutes later that eventually forced overtime. Montana (5-2, 2-2) led 10-0 in the second quarter, 17-7 at the end of the third and Nick Ostmo scored on a 2-yard run the gave the Grizzlies a 24-14 lead with 8:42 left in regulation.   Texas receiver Agiye Hall was suspended indefinitely Friday by coach Steve Sarkisian in the wake of the player's arrest on a criminal mischief charge. According to Travis County records, Hall was arrested just after 9 p.m. Thursday by UT police and charged with a Class B misdemeanor. The police report obtained by the American-Statesman said Hall did $600 worth of damage to a "vehicle boot." Class B misdemeanor charges result from damage totaling $100 to $750 in value. An attorney representing Hall declined to comment. "We're aware of the situation involving Agiye Hall, have talked with his family, and have suspended him indefinitely from all team activities for conduct that is detrimental to our program," Sarkisian said in a statement issued Friday. Hall transferred to Texas from Alabama this spring in search of a fresh start. Alabama coach Nick Saban suspended Hall in April for an undisclosed violation of team rules. - Austin American Statesman

A former Alabama receiver's first year at a new school is off to a rough start. Agiye Hall, now at Texas, was arrested Thursday in Austin on charges of criminal mischief valued between $100 and $750, according to public booking information. It is a misdemeanor charge. Hall left Alabama after one season that started strong in the A-Day game but didn't translate to much playing time in the fall. He caught passes for 72 yards with his most significant playing time coming in the national title game. The injuries to Jameson Williams and John Metchie helped thrust Hall into the loss to Georgia in Indianapolis. Hall had a pair of catches for 52 yards against the Bulldogs after recording one catch each against Miami and New Mexico State.

Hall publicly questioned his playing time on Twitter, a move that didn't help the situation. "Well, it is what it is. You know, look, it still comes down to players creating value for themselves by what they do," Saban said Oct. 18 when asked about that public frustration. "I've said this before, that there's players that have talent but they have to learn how to use it, and they have to use it in an effective way in the way they practice. It's up to the player to impress the coaches that they can be trusted to go in the game and do what they're supposed to do. "So when players get frustrated, they sometimes don't respond the way they should in terms of their preparation and focusing on what they need to do to become a good player, because they're so concerned about how much they're playing." Then in the spring, Saban announced Hall was suspended indefinitely. He entered the transfer portal April 7 and announced he was headed to Texas on April 19. - Birmingham News
