Three practices into the first preseason of his Duke tenure, Mike Elko isn't any closer to - publicly or privately - naming the Blue Devils' starting quarterback. Elko said Friday, sophomores Riley Leonard and Jordan Moore must both factor into game plans no matter who gets the start against Temple. "I think in the modern world of college football, the way the speed of the game is nowadays, we're worried about getting our third quarterback ready," Elko said. "As much as we're worried about getting one and two, we're also worried about three because that's how seasons go sometimes." Leonard started one game as a freshman last season when Gunner Holmberg, who has since transferred to Florida International, was injured. Moore has no starts but played in 10 games last season for former coach David Cutcliffe. - Rock Hill Herald

Of course, on-location acting and authentic pasta weren't the only reasons Isaiah Foskey decided to come back for another season. With the help of new defensive line coach Al Washington, the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder is determined to become a complete player and not just a vaunted pass rusher off the edge. "A lot of people said I wasn't an all-around defensive end," Foskey said. "More like a third down-type of defensive end, just get to the quarterback." That's the main reason Foskey said he received a second-round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board when he entered his name as a possible early entrant last December. "I want to show everyone I'm an all-around defensive player," Foskey said. "I can stop the run, get to the quarterback when I usually do. I want to see my name as an all-around defensive end."

Asked what stands out the most about Foskey, Washington goes right to the heart of the matter. "I think passion, if you will," Washington said. "We all have passion. I think it's enhanced when you feel you are in the right place at the right time." Back from his world travels, Foskey believes he's right where he should be at this point in his development. "You don't have anything weighing you down," Washington said. "If you can rid yourself of those things, then I think you can reach another level of passion. Because I think everybody's passionate deep down inside." - South Bend Tribune

Over the past few seasons, Notre Dame's defense had been accustomed to those types of plays in the back end from former All-American and Baltimore Ravens first round pick, Kyle Hamilton. In 2022, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive coordinator Al Golden will be expecting the same from Joseph. Joseph, a redshirt junior transfer from Northwestern who was a consensus preseason All-American, steps into Hamilton's spot as Notre Dame's speedy, playmaking high-IQ leader in its safeties room. That group also includes graduate seniors Houston Griffith and DJ Brown, juniors Ramon Henderson and Xavier Watts and sophomore Justin Walters, all of which saw playing time last season.

Griffith is coming off of a 38 tackle season in 12 starts. Brown, who started one game, added 42 tackles and all three of his career interceptions. Henderson started the Irish's final four games, finishing with 14 tackles and one pick. Watts made 15 tackles over 11 games and Walters added three tackles in limited action. "Our safety room is really deep," Joseph said. "That's just going to make all of us that much better. Ramon, X, DJ, Houston, Justin, all of us have potential to go out there and play on the field. That makes everyone have to be that much more on their game." Joseph, however, is the most talented. In his three Northwestern seasons, Joseph started 22 games, recording 84 tackles and nine interceptions. - South Bend Tribune

When Brian Kelly left for LSU, there were questions on whether some Notre Dame upperclassmen would declare for the NFL Draft or hit the transfer portal. Cornerback TaRiq Bracy was one of the players with a question mark over his future. When the smoke cleared and Marcus Freeman was entrenched as the new head coach, Bracy quietly decided to return to Notre Dame for a fifth year. "I was graduating this spring, and I just wanted to weigh all of my options," said the 5-10, 177-pound Bracy who hails from Milpitas, Calif. "Notre Dame is where I want to be." It was a significant win for Freeman and cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens. Bracy proved to be an asset in 2021, intercepting a pass, recovering a fumble and collecting 38 tackles, 26 of them solo. In all, the graduate student has played in 44 games the past four seasons.

"I feel like I have years under my belt, and I've been able to learn through the good and the bad ups and downs," Bracy said. "At this point, I do feel like I'm playing the best ball I have since being here." Bracy penciled in as the starting slot corner, but will have to fend off freshman Jaden Mickey who during spring practice showed flashes of a dynamic player who will compete for meaningful snaps. Either way, Bracy will add experience, versatility and depth to the Irish defensive backfield. "TaRiq is growing on the field and off the field," Mickens said. "He works at it, he comes in for extra meetings, he's studying film, he's maturing, and you can tell he's playing faster now because of all the work that he does." - South Bend Tribune

Virginia wide receiver Malachi Fields (6-4, 218) has a broken bone in his foot and won't participate in fall camp. Said coach Tom Elliott: 'Malachi is not going to be with us in terms of practicing this fall camp. He broke a bone in his foot and had to have surgery." The tall wideout only caught 11 passes for 172 yards in 2021, but was primed to make a jump up the depth chart in his second season with a strong fall camp. Fields will work to get healthy by the time the season rolls around, but Wisconsin transfer Devin Chandler and senior Hayden Mitchell should get more reps in his absence. - JerryRatcliffe.com

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud smiled Wednesday as he downplayed a question about Notre Dame sack leader Isaiah Foskey and the infamous blocking sled. You know, the one with a picture of Stroud in his No. 7 jersey on the front of it. The one that sent Buckeyes fans into a lather, especially since it was released July 15 through Notre Dame football's official Twitter account. "Yeah, I mean, that's cool," Stroud said Wednesday while holding court for more than an hour at Big Ten Football Media Days. "I don't have too many words about that. It's cool to see that they're thinking about me. I'm thinking about them."

Stroud, a Heisman Trophy frontrunner from Inland Empire, Calif., made it clear he has no quarrel with his opposite number as Sept. 3 and their season-opening showdown at Ohio Stadium nears. "He's a great player," Stroud said of Foskey. "He's a Cali guy. So, you know I respect that, him being from northern California (Antioch). I'm from southern California. I respect where he comes from and the plays that he does make as a good defensive end." Both Stroud and Foskey are projected to go in the first round at the 2023 NFL Draft. The quarterback, understandably, has been watching plenty of game tape on Notre Dame, so he was ready with a scouting report. "Sets the edge really hard, he can do it all," Stroud said of Foskey. "He can get off the ball fast. Definitely, he's a great player, so I'm excited to play against him." - South Bend Tribune
