*Brandon Joseph, Notre Dame, Player News

This wasn't the season Brandon Joseph hoped to have for Notre Dame, but the uber-confident safety is still headed to the NFL regardless. Joseph, a 2020 All-American at Northwestern who joined the Irish as a transfer 12 months ago, announced via social media he is declaring for the NFL Draft. A nagging high-ankle sprain suffered in the first half against Clemson on Nov. 5 limited Joseph to just one more game appearance the rest of the season. He played 37 snaps in the 38-27 loss at USC to close out the regular season.

Joseph practiced all week ahead of the Gator Bowl against South Carolina and even went through pregame warmups in full uniform, but he watched the game from the sideline in street clothes. After making nine interceptions and 132 tackles over his final two seasons with the Wildcats, Joseph managed just 30 tackles and one interception in 9 1/2 games for Notre Dame. Joseph had just one forced fumble and one pass breakup after breaking up a total of six passes in his previous two seasons. - South Bend Tribune

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 37. Brandon Joseph, S, Notre Dame, Junior. Notable 2021 stats: 79 tackles (54 solo), 3 INT. Last year's ranking: 62. A 2020 All-America selection at Northwestern, Joseph could be one of the most important transfers on defense in the past cycle. After six interceptions two seasons ago, his playmaking production dipped last fall, but he brings experience and talent to a Notre Dame secondary that will be tested right away against Ohio State. - ESPN.com

Brandon Joseph's top YouTube highlight remains his one-handed circus grab in the end zone while locked in man-to-man coverage against Ohio State wideout Garrett Wilson, a fellow Texan who went 10th overall in the NFL Draft last spring. That interception came in the Big Ten Championship Game as the 15th-ranked Wildcats led the No. 3 Buckeyes until late in the third quarter before falling 22-10. "We should've won that game," Joseph said. More than 20 months will have passed between that upset bid and Joseph's Notre Dame debut on Sept. 3 at Ohio Stadium, aka The Horseshoe. Justin Fields, now starting for the NFL's Chicago Bears, has given way to Heisman Trophy-frontrunner C.J. Stroud at quarterback, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. are the primary receiving weapons.

Yet, Joseph can still draw heavily on how it felt to be on the same field with a loaded Buckeyes roster, competing at the game's highest level and conceding nothing. "The only thing I think about right now is Ohio State," he said. "I ain't going to lie to you. That's everything. That game is everything. That starts our season off. After we beat them, we sail through the season as the best defense in the country, undoubtedly. My whole mindset is on Ohio State. "I'm not focused on anything but C.J. and Jaxon and Harrison and everyone they got over there. That's our first step. The national championship is my only goal, but with a Week One like that, I don't think about anything else." - South Bend Tribune

Over the past few seasons, Notre Dame's defense had been accustomed to those types of plays in the back end from former All-American and Baltimore Ravens first round pick, Kyle Hamilton. In 2022, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive coordinator Al Golden will be expecting the same from Joseph. Joseph, a redshirt junior transfer from Northwestern who was a consensus preseason All-American, steps into Hamilton's spot as Notre Dame's speedy, playmaking high-IQ leader in its safeties room. That group also includes graduate seniors Houston Griffith and DJ Brown, juniors Ramon Henderson and Xavier Watts and sophomore Justin Walters, all of which saw playing time last season.

Griffith is coming off of a 38 tackle season in 12 starts. Brown, who started one game, added 42 tackles and all three of his career interceptions. Henderson started the Irish's final four games, finishing with 14 tackles and one pick. Watts made 15 tackles over 11 games and Walters added three tackles in limited action. "Our safety room is really deep," Joseph said. "That's just going to make all of us that much better. Ramon, X, DJ, Houston, Justin, all of us have potential to go out there and play on the field. That makes everyone have to be that much more on their game." Joseph, however, is the most talented. In his three Northwestern seasons, Joseph started 22 games, recording 84 tackles and nine interceptions. - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame defensive back Brandon Joseph entered his third collegiate year with plenty of hype and 2022 NFL Draft first-round upside, but pundits cooled on him after a slow start with Northwestern. A fresh spot after transferring to Notre Dame should do him a world of good. He will have plenty of eyes on him after replacing 2022 first-round pick Kyle Hamilton. If he can even slightly replicate Hamilton's productions, that could be enough to merit an early round selection. - 247Sports.com

Northwestern made its sixth comeback from a deficit of 17 points or more since 2004, climbing back to beat Iowa 21-20. The Wildcats have already outdone their 1-8 Big Ten performance last season. And it's not just their offensive upgrades, highlighted by quarterback Peyton Ramsey and coordinator Mike Bajakian, that deserve credit either. The NU defense already has forced seven turnovers, half of its 2019 total. The Wildcats had seven interceptions in 12 games last season and already have six in two games this year. Iowa threw three picks in the second half Saturday. Redshirt freshman safety Brandon Joseph snagged two of them. "This is a mindset," Joseph said. "Not just me but the whole (defensive backs) group. I did it today, but they did it last week, and now we're going to try to go out and do it again next week and the week after that. It's a mindset that we have to get turnovers, and we're going to continue to do that every day." - Chicago Tribune
