Not since Brady Quinn was heading into his senior season has Notre Dame been ranked higher in the Associated Press preseason college football poll. In their first season under new coach Marcus Freeman, the Irish checked in at No. 5 on Monday after occupy ing that same spot last week in the USA Today/Coaches Poll. It's the first time since 2006, when Charlie Weis' second edition was preseason No. 2, that Notre Dame could make a top-five claim heading into the year. The Irish finished last season ranked ei ghth after going 11-2 and losing to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl, which also marked Freeman's debut at the helm.Ohio State, which Notre Dame will visit on the night of Sept. 3 in the season opener, is ranked second. Fourth-ranked Clemson (Nov . 5), 14th-ranked USC (Nov. 26) and No. 25 BYU (Oct. 8 in Las Vegas) are the other ranked teams on the Irish schedule this fall. This marks the 18th time Notre Dame has been ranked in the top five of the AP preseason poll since it started in 1950. The on ly other time the Irish were ranked fifth was 1978, when they were coming off a national championship under coach Dan Devine. That 1977 team, which opened at No. 3, was Notre Dame's only eventual national champion ranked in the AP preseason top five. In the seven-plus decades of the AP preseason poll, the other Irish national champions opened sixth (1966), eighth (1973) and 13th (1988). - South Bend Tribune

Losing slot receiver Avery Davis to his second ACL tear in nine months was a "huge blow" to Notre Dame's collective team psyche, not just its offense, coach Marcus Freeman said Saturday. A returning captain, Davis' 66 career receptions and eight touchdow ns rivaled the total combined production from the returning receiver group of Braden Lenzy (50 catches/six touchdowns), Lorenzo Styles (24/1), Joe Wilkins Jr. (11/2), Deion Colzie (4/0) and Matt Salerno (1/0).Freeman met Friday night with receiver s coach Chansi Stuckey to discuss how Davis' snaps could be redistributed. Further meetings will be held with coordinators Tommy Rees (offense) and Al Golden (defense) as additional options are considered. One of those, Freeman agreed, would be to move r eserve safety Xavier Watts back to offense. Signed as a three-star recruit from Omaha, Neb., where he posted 1,072 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior, Watts was rated among the top 75 receivers in the 2020 recruiting class. "Xavier Watts is ha ving a really good camp," Freeman said, noting the starting safety role opposite Brandon Joseph remains an open competition. - South Bend Tribune

Long considered the prohibitive favorite to open the season as Notre Dame's starting quarterback, Tyler Buchner learned in a Friday night position meeting he had indeed won the two-man battle with Drew Pyne. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman made the publi c announcement Saturday, three weeks before the fifth-ranked Irish open the season at No. 2 Ohio State. It will be the first career start for Buchner, who appeared in 10 games as a freshman last season, mostly as a change-of-pace option to Jack Coan. "We just felt like it was time," Freeman said. "It was time to give the offense clarity on who's going to be the starting quarterback."Calling it an "extremely difficult decision" and one he and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees "spent an enormous amo unt of time" discussing, Freeman cited the "entire body of work" from both quarterbacks. Buchner, the top returning rusher on the team after a 336-yard, three-touchdown debut season with his legs, has just 35 career pass attempts. That's the fewest for a Notre Dame season-opening starter since Brandon Wimbush had five pass attempts heading into 2017. Buchner, who averaged 7.3 yards per carry last season, passed for 298 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in 2021. He did not appear in the Fie sta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State and missed the Blue-Gold Game with a sprained ankle after impressing the coaching staff through the first 13 practices. - South Bend Tribune

Brandon Joseph's top YouTube highlight remains his one-handed circus grab in the end zone while locked in man-to-man coverage against Ohio State wideout Garrett Wilson, a fellow Texan who went 10th overall in the NFL Draft last spring. That interception came in the Big Ten Championship Game as the 15th-ranked Wildcats led the No. 3 Buckeyes until late in the third quarter before falling 22-10. "We should've won that game," Joseph said. More than 20 months will have passed between that upset bid and Jose ph's Notre Dame debut on Sept. 3 at Ohio Stadium, aka The Horseshoe. Justin Fields, now starting for the NFL's Chicago Bears, has given way to Heisman Trophy-frontrunner C.J. Stroud at quarterback, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. are the p rimary receiving weapons.Yet, Joseph can still draw heavily on how it felt to be on the same field with a loaded Buckeyes roster, competing at the game's highest level and conceding nothing. "The only thing I think about right now is Ohio State," he said. "I ain't going to lie to you. That's everything. That game is everything. That starts our season off. After we beat them, we sail through the season as the best defense in the country, undoubtedly. My whole mindset is on Ohio State. "I'm not foc used on anything but C.J. and Jaxon and Harrison and everyone they got over there. That's our first step. The national championship is my only goal, but with a Week One like that, I don't think about anything else." - South Bend Tribune

Don't get Harry Hiestand started on arm length. While some might wonder how that factored into the pre-camp juggling of Notre Dame's offensive line, the veteran line-play guru considers the whole topic somewhat pointless. "That's something that people li ke to talk about," Hiestand said. "Just watch the guy play. Either he can block or he can't block. Get your hands inside. If you have long arms and your hands are always outside..." He shook his head. Arm length, he said, is "not a big issue."For proof, he cited Dallas Cowboys perennial All-Pro Zack Martin, one of Hiestand's top proteges during his prior run in South Bend from 2012-17. "A guy named Zack Martin, a future Hall of Fame player, that's all everybody talked about was how short his arms were," Hiestand said. "I thought it was a joke." Martin's 32 7/8-inch arm length was considered a detriment when he entered the NFL as the 16th-overall pick in 2014. The average arm length for an NFL guard is 33 inches. For a tackle it's 34 inches, whil e a center at the game's top level averages 32 1/2 inches in arm length. For reference, Josh Lugg, moved back inside to right guard after starting 12 games last season at right tackle, said he has an arm length of 31 3/4 inches. - South Bend Tribune

While Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman will be out indefinitely after undergoing a medical procedure for a "non-football-related" condition, his presence at practice Wednesday is already rallying teammates. "Definitely somber last night, but seeing hi m out here today, out of surgery and everything, that's reassuring," tight end Blake Whiteheart, a Mount Tabor alumnus, said after practice Wednesday. "We got after it today. Whenever we see him, he motivates us. Even without him, we've got to keep pushi ng expectations. They haven't changed at all. He's a big part of our team, but he's going to be here on the sidelines cheering us on." Offensive lineman Sean Maginn also found relief in seeing Hartman at practice. "It was exciting seeing him," Maginn sai d. "Obviously, we didn't get much information last night. It's human instinct to worry about him, and just to see him out here, smiling, talking to us, and he just reassured everyone that he's going to be OK. His safety is No. 1. He seems in good spirits . We're going to be around him, love on him and just lift him up and remind him that we're here for him."Hartman received a medical evaluation Tuesday at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. What the condition is or how long Hartman c ould be out are not clear. "We expect him to be back," Clawson said after practice Wednesday. "It's too early to tell what that timeline is...We expect him to be back, and as it goes along we'll get a better idea. Completely un-football-related..."He's o ut here today, and he's good...He just wanted those guys to see him and know that he was OK." Hartman's absence elevates Mitch Griffis, a redshirt freshman but one who is entering his third season, to the No. 1 role, with Michael Kern behind him. The Dem on Deacons, ranked 19th nationally in the American Football Coaches Association preseason poll, will open their season at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1 against VMI at Truist Field. "We have a lot of confidence in all of our quarterbacks," Clawson said. "They're read y to play, and they're ready to win." Hartman's message to his team, Clawson said, was "'Keep going.' He'll be back; he doesn't know when." - Winston Salem Journal

It's hard to have a down day around Bauer. He won't let it happen. "He's great," defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Al Golden said of Bauer. "He's got so much energy. He's a natural leader. He's an Alpha. When it gets hard, he's not afraid to step u p and lead." Bauer's not alone. So much has been made early in preseason (understandably so) about how the strength of this team this season can be and should be the offensive and defensive lines. There's depth. There's experience. There's talent. There' s drive. They're good. Don't dismiss the linebackers.Remember how Bauer was among one of the dozen line leaders at practice? He had company with three additional LBs - JD Bertrand, Jack Kiser and Marist Liufau in that first group. That might be as good of a foursome as the Irish have had in years. Individually, they bring their own unique set of skills. Collectively, they can be really good. "We have a brilliant room," said defensive graduate assistant James Laurinaitis, who spends a lot of time with the linebackers. "The best part of that is they challenge you as a coach to really know it. You can't step into the linebacker room and not be prepared." Same goes for the players. Bauer mentioned Golden's playbook and chuckled. All the different looks. All the responsibilities. All the pages. Decide to dive into it at the start of camp, and you'll drown in the details. "If you're just trying to study Coach Golden's defense now?" he said. "Good luck to you." - South Bend Tribune

Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman will miss "an extended period of time" for treatment of what the school described Wednesday as medical condition unrelated to football. In a statement, the school said Hartman sought medical attention Tuesday following a workout. He will miss team activities indefinitely and it's unclear when he might be able to return to competition. The school cited privacy laws in not revealing specifics of Hartman's condition. The fifth-year junior was one of the top passers in the Bowl Subdivision ranks last year and helped the Demon Deacons reach the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game while tying a program record with 11 wins. In a statement, Hartman called Tuesday "a frustrating day." "I look forward to attackin g this rehabilitation process and I am so appreciative of the support I have received from my family, teammates and coaches," he said. Hartman ranked 11th in the FBS ranks in passing yardage (302.0 per game) and tied for fifth with 39 touchdowns last sea son at the helm of the nation's No. 4 scoring attack (41.0). That helped Wake Forest crack the top 10 of the AP Top 25 poll last season and win the ACC's Atlantic Division title. - AP College Football

Four months after downplaying the possibility due to timing issues, Notre Dame offensive line guru Harry Hiestand found a way to move All-America candidate Jarrett Patterson from center to left guard after all. Fully recovered from early March surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle on the left side of his chest, Patterson worked exclusively at left guard on Friday as the Irish opened August training camp. Redshirt junior Zeke Correll, who filled in at center this spring, remained the first-team center until heat exhaustion ended his practice a few periods early. Even when Correll went out, it was redshirt freshman Pat Coogan that jumped in as the first-team center while Patterson (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) remained at guard.Correll, a Cincinnati p roduct who stands 6-3 and 308 pounds, opened last season as the starting left guard but gave way after five games to Andrew Kristofic. "You've got to look at that unit in terms of all five, not as individual pieces," Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said. "J-Patt being at guard, we feel like, gives those five guys up front the best chance to be successful." Patterson, signed originally as a left tackle in 2018 out of Laguna Hills, Calif., has started at center in 34 of Notre Dame's last 38 games. Patters on, a graduate who spurned NFL interest to play another season, missed the final four games in 2020 after suffering a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. Correll spelled him for two of those games in 2020. Midway through spring practice, Hiestand expressed di sappointment at not being able to see Patterson work at guard. "I would want to get him some guard work, just for him personally, but it would've been this spring," Hiestand said. "But not now. We'll be right up against it, getting him ready." - South Be nd Tribune
