TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 7. Michael Mayer, Jr, TE, Notre Dame, 6-5, 265,...While ND fans griped about the Irish offense being boring in 21-10 loss at second-ranked Ohio State, they should have no complaints about tight end Michael Mayer. He looked excellent as blocker, receiver and brutal after-catch runner against a very good Buckeyes defense. He led Notre Dame with five catches for 32 yards. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 11. Isaiah Foskey, rJr, DE, Notre Dame, 6-5, 265,...Foskey, considered a key on the Irish defense, didn't really stand out in their 21-10 loss at Ohio State. He finished with four tackles but didn't generate much pr essure. It was most telling in the fourth quarter when Notre Dame needed a stop and just couldn't get one. Much of the reason could be Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson, whose matchup with Foskey was a focal point going into the game (see No. 12) . - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has been medically cleared to play in the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons' trip to Vanderbilt this weekend after receiving treatment for a blood clot. The school announced Hartman's return Tuesday, roughly a month since anno uncing he would be out indefinitely due to what it described at the time only as a non-football medical issue. Tuesday's statement included details on Hartman's condition, treatment and recovery.Hartman, now in his fifth year, was ranked as one of the nation's top quarterbacks last season for a team that reached the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. “There will be time for me to tell my complete story," Hartman said in a statement, "but right now I am just really excited to get back on the field with my teammates and compete each day to help our team get ready for Vanderbilt this Saturday in Nashville." In a statement, Julie A. Freischlag, the dean of the Wake Forest's medical school and a vascular surgeon, said Hartman developed th e clot in the subclavian vein, located near the collarbone. It's known as Paget-Schroetter syndrome, or "effort thrombosis," and Freischlag said doctors believe it was caused by a previous infection that eventually led to inflammation. Hartman had a proc edure Aug. 9 to remove the clot, as well as surgery to eliminate pressure in the vein and dilate it. - AP College Football

Riley Leonard threw for two touchdowns and completed his first 15 passes of the season, boosting Duke to a 30-0 victory over Temple as coach Mike Elko won in his debut Friday night. Duke recorded its first shutout of a Football Bowl Subdivision team sinc e 1989 at North Carolina. Leonard, a sophomore, completed 24 of 30 passes for 328 yards. He also was the top rusher in the game with 64 yards on 11 carries. Elko was in his first game as a head coach after replacing David Cutcliffe, who spent 14 seasons in charge of the Blue Devils. Duke is coming off three consecutive losing seasons with a combined 10-25 record during that stretch. It was a disappointing opening game for first-year Temple coach Stan Drayton, who had been the associate head coach at Texas. Temple was held to 179 yards of total offense, with just 50 in the first half compared to Duke's 337 by halftime. Duke scored five plays into the game on Jaylen Coleman's 1-yard run. Moore threw touchdown passes of 4 yards to Jordan Moore and 3 9 yards to Sahmir Hagans in the first half. Moore was the game's second-leading receiver with 77 yards on six catches. He competed with Leonard for the starting quarterback role in the preseason and is listed as the backup quarterback. - Duke/AP College Football

A 2020 All-America selection at Northwestern, Joseph could be one of the most important transfers on defense in the past cycle. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Monday that offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson was questionable for the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish's opener against No. 2 Ohio State. Patterson has been dealing with an injury to his right foot for about two weeks. Freeman said he did expect the fifth-year senior to practice this week. "We'll see as we get closer to game-time where he'll be, but I would say he's questionable right now," Freeman said. Patterson was one of the best centers in the country last year fo r Notre Dame and a preseason All-American. He was listed as the starter at left guard on the Irish's first depth chart of the season, released Monday. Patterson's injury gave Zeke Correll an opportunity to earn the start at center. - AP College Football

Isaiah Foskey, Jarrett Patterson and Michael Mayer aren't just preseason All-America selections for Notre Dame football. Friday, they learned they would be 2022 captains as well. Joining them on the six-player list are wide receiver Avery Davis, out for the season with his second ACL tear in nine months but still helping out at practice; and linebackers Bo Bauer and JD Bertrand.Davis and Patterson also held the honor last season, making them the 21st and 22nd two-time Irish captains over the past century. Robert Hainsey (2019-20), Ian Book (2019-20), Drue Tranquill (2017-18), Mike McGlinchey (2016-17), Nick Martin (2014-15), Sheldon Day (2014-15) and Zack Martin (2012-13) also repeated as captains in recent years. Patterson, a three-year starter at center who converted to left guard before training camp, is questionable for the season opener on Sept. 3 at Ohio State with a sprained right foot. Mayer, the record-breaking tight end projected to go in the top 10 of the NFL Draft next spring, is th e only junior on the list. Foskey, a fourth-year junior defensive end, is a likely first-round pick in 2022 as well. - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame's offensive line has been hit hard by injuries in recent practices and had a limited number of bodies during Friday's session. Senior left guard Jarrett Patterson wheeled into practice with his right lower leg on a scooter and in a cast. Marcu s Freeman said Patterson would miss about 10 days of practice and his status for the Irish season opener at Ohio State on Sept. 3 is questionable. Aamil Wagner, Caleb Johnson, Michael Carmody and Tosh Baker were also unavailable among Notre Dame's linema n group. Andrew Kristofic, who took most of the first-team reps at left guard, and Joe Alt, each were seen limping after separate plays during practice, but remained in drills throughout the day. - South Bend Tribune
