Williams ran 25 times and had his third 100-y ard game of the season as the Irish (4-0, 3-0 ACC) won their 22nd straight at Notre Dame Stadium. It came against an inspired 3-4 Louisville defense that spent most of the afternoon on the field. Notre Dame controlled the clock for 36:15 including a game -ending 14-play drive that burned the final 7:55.Book completed 11 of 19 for 106 yards and ran 12 times for 47 yards. The loss was the fourth straight for the Cardinals (1-4, 0-4), who got 118 yards passing and 49 rushing from Malik Cunningham. Ja vian Hawkins, the nation's No. 3 rusher coming into the game, was limited to 51 yards on 15 carries. The Irish, who outgained the Cardinals 338-219, controlled the clock for 21:57 of the first half, running 45 plays and gaining 212 yards to Louisville's 23 plays for 90. The medical staff was tested Saturday by Eichenberg when he appeared to get accidentally poked in the eye by of Florida State defender in the second quarter. Eichenberg eventually emerged from the locker room icing his eye. He returned to the game in the third quarter looking like a battered boxer and sporting a visor on his helmet for added protection. Kelly said Eichenberg, a captain, showed no hesitation at all about returning to the game. "It's crazy," Book said. "Looked like he got hit right in the face. He's just strong and he wants to be out there. He's tough." Even though Eichenberg is arguably Notre Dame's best offensive lineman, the unit didn't seem to miss a beat while he was sidelined. Left guard Aaron Banks slid out to left tackle and seni or Dillan Gibbons entered at left guard. Book didn't couch his words like Williams did when talking about the Irish offensive line. He's convinced they're the best in the country, not just one of the best. - South Bend Tribune

Williams fumbled at his own 32 on the second pla y from scrimmage, then riddled Florida State the rest of the way, picking up 130 yards and both his TDs by halftime as the Fighting Irish (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) took a 35-20 lead. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said Monday it is too early to tell how much time quarterback Jack Coan might miss after the senior injured his foot in practice Saturday. "He's going to see a specialist," Chryst said. "We'll know more in the coming days on t hat one there. We'll find out what all that means." The 16th-ranked Badgers open the season Oct. 24 by hosting Illinois. Chryst said the injury occurred when Coan was dropping back and that it didn't involve any contact. Redshirt freshman Graham Mertz ha s been receiving the first-team reps that Coan didn't take. Coan has made 18 career starts and started all 14 games for Wisconsin last year as the Badgers went 10-4 with losses in the Big Ten championship game and Rose Bowl. He had a school-record 236 co mpletions for 2,727 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions last season. He completed 69.6% of his passes and also had four touchdown runs. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Austin, who missed the first two games of the season recovering from a broken bone in his left foot suffered on July 29, hasn't played in a game since the 2018 College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Clemson and his last reception came against Navy in late October of that year. Austin was suspended all of last season, so the last time he was in anything close to game action was last year's Blue-Gold Game. Kelly said Austin will likely be limited to 15-20 plays on Saturday if all goes well. But what d oes Kelly expect to see from Austin when fully unleashed? "Based upon what we've seen prior - explosive, rangy, outstanding ball skills and a guy that can open up the game," Kelly said. "He can take the top off of coverages. He can catch it and go the di stance, and he can win one-on-one matchups. A guy that would be nice to get on the field for us." - South Bend Tribune

Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan is dealing with a foot injury as the Badgers prepare for the start of their coronavirus pandemic-delayed season. Athletic department spokesman Brian Mason confirmed that Coan injured his foot in practice Saturday and didn' t practice Sunday. Mason didn't have any update on the severity of Coan's injury beyond that. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported Coan's injury and said the senior from Sayville, New York, is out indefinitely. The 16th-ranked Badgers open their season Oct. 24 by hosting Illinois. Coan has made 18 career starts and started all 14 games for Wisconsin last year as the Badgers went 10-4 with losses in the Big Ten championship game and Rose Bowl. Coan was effective in 2019 in his first full season as a starter, but he also wasn't the focal point of the offense with Jonathan Taylor in the backfield. With Taylor gone, the Badgers could rely on Coan's arm more in 2020. He completed 69.6 percent of h is passes last year - good for third in program history - while throwing for 2,727 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions for the Big Ten West champion Badgers. The former three-star prospect isn't the most athletic quarterback, but at 6-foot-3, he can be an effective short-yardage runner near the goal line, rushing for four scores in 2019. But while Coan is the incumbent starter, redshirt freshman Graham Mertz could push him for playing time this season. - Ann Arbor News

Ian Book ran for three first-half touchdowns and No. 7 Notre Dame won its 20th straight home game 52-0 against South Florida on Saturday. The Fighting Irish (2-0) led 35-0 at halftime and for the second year in a row posted a 52-point shutout. Book cappe d the opening drive with 4-yard touchdown run and freshman Chris Tyree scored from a yard out about five minutes later. It never got better for the first-year coach Jeff Scott's Bulls (1-1), who were a late add to Notre Dame's schedule after the Irish jo ined the Atlantic Coast Conference for this off season in a pandemic. C'Bo Flemister ran for a career-best 127 yards for Notre Dame as the Irish spread the touches around between starter Kyren Williams (62 yards on 10 carries) and Tyree (65 on eight). Bo ok is the first quarterback in Notre Dame's modern era to run for three touchdowns in one half. He added 143 yards on 12-of-19 passing before exiting with 2:21 left in the third quarter as freshman Drew Pyne took over. Jafar Armstrong added a 5-yard TD r un to close out the scoring for the Irish. Meanwhile, the Irish defense limited USF to 65 yards in the first half and 231 total while breaking in three new starters. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound McCloud covered Duke's bigger receivers. His role requires him to be physical, contest 50-50 balls and offer run support. Quarterback Chase Brice completed 4-of-7 passes for 39 yards when targeting McCloud's man. McCloud tied for third on the team in tackles (five) and recorded a pass breakup on a back-shoulder throw. He nearly intercepted that pass. The Irish featured McCloud in plenty of man-to-man coverage. What McCloud demonstrated in both techniques encouraged Burris about h is potential for this season. "He has a skill set that can play off or press. He does it very well," Burris said. "When he's up in press, he can be physical. But he has the length that can take away some of those deep-ball threats going down the field. T hat's why you saw more back-shoulder fades against Duke." The Irish listed McCloud and true freshman Clarence Lewis as boundary corner co-starters in their week one depth chart. How McCloud played figured to be a reason why he never came out of the game. He lined up at corner for all of Brice's 37 pass attempts. Lewis did not play a snap. - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame held a foe to 21 or fewer points for the 19th time in 27 games under coordinator Clark Lea. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, a 215-pound All-American candidate, had nine tackles, a sack and forced fumble. Up front, Lea employed eight differ ent lineman (four ends, four tackles), all of whom logged double-digit snaps. That kind of depth allowed the Irish to sustain an effective pass rush with their base look. - Tampa Tribune

Sophomore safety Kyle Hamilton made seven tackles, second most on the team, before leaving in the third quarter with an apparent left leg/ankle injury. If there's one guy the defense cannot afford to lose, if this team cannot afford to lose, it's No. 14. No Hamilton changes everything in the back end of the Irish defense, and not for the better. Irish coach Brian Kelly said afterward it was nothing serious with Hamilton, just an ankle injury. - South Bend Tribune
