Kyren Williams and Kyle Hamilton, two junior star players for No. 5 Notre Dame, announced Friday they will not play in the Fiesta Bowl against No. 9 Oklahoma State so they can instead prepare for the 2022 NFL draft. The two were Associated Press preseason first-team All-Americans, running back Williams as the all-purpose player and Hamilton at safety They were also two of Notre Dame’s seven captains during an 11-1 season. "Glory to the Lord! DREAM BIG," tweeted the 5-foot-9, 199-pound Williams, who rushed for 1,002 yards and 14 touchdowns and also had 42 receptions for 359 yards and three scores. He also returned punts and kickoffs, averaging 128.4 yards per game in all-purpose yards. "Thank you Notre Dame," tweeted the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Hamilton, who injured his right knee in Notre Dame’s 31-16 victory over Southern California on Oct. 23 and missed the final five games. In seven games, Hamilton had 35 tackles, four passes broken up and three interceptions. - AP College Football

Notre Dame survived Florida State backup quarterback McKenzie Milton's unlikely comeback on an emotional night when the Seminoles honored Bobby Bowden. Jonathan Doerer made a 41-yard field goal in overtime and No. 9 Notre Dame escaped with a 41-38 victory after Florida State overcame an 18-point deficit Sunday. Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald's 37-yard attempt sailed wide left on the first overtime possession, allowing Notre Dame to run a few plays and set up Doerer's kick. "What's most important is going on the road, winning the opener against a team that presented a lot of challenges," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "We know we got work to do, but I like this team. We'll get better and we'll make a lot of improvement in week 2." Bowden, the coaching great who won two national titles with the Seminoles, died at 91 of pancreatic cancer Aug. 8.

A logo of Bowden's trademark hat and the script "Bobby" was on the 25-yard line, and Florida State coaches also wore logos on their polo shirts. Florida State's Marching Chiefs spelled out "Bobby" on the field at halftime and played "Amazing Grace." Milton, the UCF grad transfer quarterback who hadn't played in a game since suffering a gruesome leg injury in November 2018, fired a 22-yard strike to Ja'Khi Douglas on his first pass. Florida State has lost five straight season openers and, while the Seminoles rallied, they can also point to three turnovers as well as nine penalties. Travis threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he also threw three interceptions - two to Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton. The Fighting Irish capitalized all three times by scoring touchdowns. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Notre Dame and Iowa State each had three players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team, led by Fighting Irish defensive back Kyle Hamilton and Cyclones running back Breece Hall. The preseason All-America team presented by Regions Bank was released Monday, five days before the first games of the season kickoff. Eight teams have at least two first-team All-Americans, with seventh-ranked Iowa State and ninth-ranked Notre Dame leading the way.

Along with Hall, Iowa State is represented on the first team by tight end Charlie Kolar and linebacker Mike Rose. Hamilton is joined by Fighting Irish teammates Cain Madden, a guard who transferred from Marshall in the offseason, and running back Kyren Williams, who made the team as an all-purpose player. Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler is the first-team quarterback and Sooners teammate Nik Bonitto made the team at linebacker. - AP College Football

A sign that college football season is almost here has arrived. It's the annual blitz of preseason watch lists for college football's top awards. The watch list spree began in earnest Monday and will continue through the end of next week. ND Insider will track all of the Notre Dame mentions below. Kyle Hamilton was named to his first preseason watch list of the year Monday. It certainly won't be his last. The Bednarik Award has identified the best defensive player in college football every year since 1995. Hamilton, who recorded 63 tackles, seven pass breakups, 4.5 tackles for a loss and one interception as a sophomore, was one of 18 semifinalists last season for the Bednarik Award, which was given to Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. Former Irish linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was one of the three finalists alongside Collins. - South Bend Tribune

Sophomore safety Kyle Hamilton made seven tackles, second most on the team, before leaving in the third quarter with an apparent left leg/ankle injury. If there's one guy the defense cannot afford to lose, if this team cannot afford to lose, it's No. 14. No Hamilton changes everything in the back end of the Irish defense, and not for the better. Irish coach Brian Kelly said afterward it was nothing serious with Hamilton, just an ankle injury. - South Bend Tribune

The coronavirus pandemic hasn't prevented watch list season from returning. The Chuck Bednarik Award list, the first watch list released by the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), came out Monday and included Notre Dame sophomore safety Kyle Hamilton and senior rover Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Recognizing the best defensive player in college football, the Bednarik Award went to Ohio State defensive end Chase Young in 2019. Linebacker Manti Teo marks the only Notre Dame player to earn the award, in 2012.

Despite playing less than half the snaps behind starting safeties Jalen Elliott and Alohi Gilman last season, Hamilton recorded a team-high four interceptions in 13 games. He garnered Freshman All-American status from The Athletic. Notre Dame named him Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year at its Echoes Awards in December. - South Bend Tribune

Ed Miller's first prediction about Kyle Hamilton's Notre Dame career came true. Not only would Hamilton not redshirt, Miller believed, but he'd also make a significant impact as a freshman last season. What Miller prophesied may have seemed like a reach at the time. With veteran starting safeties Alohi Gilman and Jalen Elliott heading the position group, Hamilton's opportunities to show his prowess were limited. Yet despite playing less than half the defensive snaps, Hamilton claimed freshman All-America recognition and led the Irish with four interceptions. Miller knew Hamilton well after training him since he was in the eighth grade. After working with him during winter break and a few times since last week, Miller's ready for another prediction. "He will be a top five draft pick when he comes out," said Miller, the founder of The Rack Performance Athletic Center in Atlanta.

Hamilton's work under Miller intensified once his high school basketball career concluded last March. His progress before arriving in South Bend shows what could be accomplished by the Notre Dame trio in the coming weeks. On March 11, 2019, Hamilton recorded a 33-inch vertical, 117-inch broad jump and a laser-timed 1.76-second 10-yard dash. Three months later, he boosted those numbers to 40 inches, 122 inches and 1.66 seconds, respectively. "If you get incrementally better," Miller said, "you take that as a win. He got leaps above better." At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds this time last year, Hamilton hoped to add weight while maintaining his explosiveness. He joined the Irish at 200 pounds before making additional gains in height and weight. Now at 6-4, 215, Hamilton's looking to top out at 220 pounds. - South Bend Tribune
