Kyren Williams had a 3-yard touchdown run in the second overtime and No. 4 Notre Dame shut down top-ranked Clemson with a couple of sacks to seal a 47-40 victory Saturday night, the Fighting Irish's first victory over a No. 1 in 27 years. Clemson had won 36 straight games and had not lost to an Atlantic Coast Conference team since 2017. The Fighting Irish (7-0, 6-0), playing in the ACC only because of the pandemic, snapped both streaks and sparked fans to storm the field in a celebration that most defin itely did not meet the CDC's social-distancing guidelines. After Williams gave Norte Dame the lead on the first possession of the second OT, the Irish pushed Clemson back with back-to-back sacks on DJ Uaigalelei by Adetokumbo Ogundeji and Daelin Ha yes on the Tigers first two plays. The big freshman quarterback completed to passes after the second-and-39, but the final one was way short of the line to gain and a couple of laterals didn't help. The Fighting Irish have won 13 straight games, snapped an 11-game losing streak against top-five teams and beat a No. 1 for the first time since taking down Florida State in 1993 at Notre Dame Stadium. - AP College Football

Northwestern made its sixth comeback from a deficit of 17 points or more since 2004, climbing back to beat Iowa 21-20. The Wildcats have already outdone their 1-8 Big Ten performance last season. And it's not just their offensive upgrades, highlighted by quarterback Peyton Ramsey and coordinator Mike Bajakian, that deserve credit either. The NU defense already has forced seven turnovers, half of its 2019 total. The Wildcats had seven interceptions in 12 games last season and already have six in two game s this year. Iowa threw three picks in the second half Saturday. Redshirt freshman safety Brandon Joseph snagged two of them. "This is a mindset," Joseph said. "Not just me but the whole (defensive backs) group. I did it today, but they did it last week, and now we're going to try to go out and do it again next week and the week after that. It's a mindset that we have to get turnovers, and we're going to continue to do that every day." - Chicago Tribune

Fifth-year defensive end Daelin Hayes, a captain, led the defensive effort with arguably the best game of his Irish career. He totaled five tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles on his sacks. They were his first sacks of the season and the first sinc e the season opener at Louisville last season. Hayes, who missed the final nine games last year with a shoulder injury, said his play has outpaced his statistical output so far this season. But making a splash in the box score helps. Only one of his stri ps sacks was recovered by the Irish. "Today just happened to be a day where those plays came to me," Hayes said. "I was excited and glad. The first one is the sweetest, but it's also the hardest one to get out the way. Glad I could put that behind me and just keep moving forward." - Indianapolis Star/News

Ian Book passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns - two of them long catch-and-runs to graduate transfer Ben Skowronek - and No. 3 Notre Dame overwhelmed reeling Pittsburgh 45-3 on Saturday. A week after scuffling its way past Louisville, Notre Dame (5- 0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) had no such issues while handling the Panthers (3-4, 2-4) their fourth consecutive loss. Book hit Skowronek for a 34-yard score on Fighting Irish's first possession and Pitt - playing without injured senior quarterback K enny Pickett for a second straight week - simply could not keep up. Notre Dame's massive offensive line held its own against one of the nation's best pass-rushing teams and when Book had time, he had no trouble finding teammates open downfield. Book aver aged 19.5 yards per completion and often had to do little more than flip the ball up and let his playmakers do the rest. He connected with Skowronek for a 73-yard score in the second quarter, with the 6-foot-3 Skowronek doing most of the work as he out-j umped 5-9 Pitt defensive back Marquis Williams for the ball then sprinted to the end zone to make it 14-3. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Book. The quarterback. The three-year starter who doesn't always do this or do that to everyone's liking. All he does is win. Like Saturday. Book completed a pair of critical third-down tosses late in the fourth quarter. He found Javon McKinley for seven yards across the middle on third and six. He found Ben Skowronek for 12 yards on a crossing route on third and seven. It kept the chains moving. It kept the clock running. It kept that Irish sideline believing. "As a quarterback, it's up to me to spread the ball around the field and be smart with it," Book said. "I just want to rally the guys. That's my job."That's also Book, now a staggering 24-3 as the starter. That's who he's always been. He also had the pocket presence earlier in the third q uarter when everything broke down and nothing good offered itself, to just tuck it and run and find the end zone for the go-ahead score. The only touchdown for the Irish. Notre Dame needed that from Book. He delivered. But what else is new? "Look, he win s," Kelly said. "When the game's on the line, you can count on Ian Book to come up and make big plays for us. That's a good feeling to have." - South Bend Tribune
