Wisconsin could have all its quarterbacks available Saturday for duty for the first time this season. According to a source, Jack Coan, who suffered a right foot injury on Oct. 3 and underwent surgery four days later, has returned to practice and has been cleared to play if needed. UW's scheduled game last week against Minnesota was called off because of rising coronavirus numbers in the Gophers' program. The extra practice time was beneficial for Coan, who last played in the 2020 Rose Bowl against Oregon. Head coach Paul Chryst said recently Coan was progressing toward his return. "He means a ton to this team," Chryst said. - Journal Sentinel

No. 2 Notre Dame wrapped up a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game by virtue of the league shuffling its schedule Tuesday to create an open date for the Fighting Irish and No. 4 Clemson before their likely rematch on Dec. 19. The ACC announced Notre Dame's game against Wake Forest, which was rescheduled for Dec. 12 after being postponed in late September, will not be played. The first-place Irish (9-0, 8-0 ACC) host Syracuse on Saturday to complete their regular season. Notre Dame holds all possible tiebreakers over title game contenders Clemson (8-1, 7-1) and Miami (7-1, 6-1) even if it loses to Syracuse. Clemson's postponed game at Florida State will also not be made up. The Tigers can clinch a spot in the championship game with a victory at Virginia Tech on Saturday. - AP College Football

He's become a transformative player, shattering perceptions and setting new expectations for what his ceiling might look like now that he's thoroughly shattered the glass one that was fitted for him. The context of his numbers means so much more than the numbers themselves - not that 23-of-33 passing for 279 yards and a TD and 48 yards rushing on eight carries qualify as pedestrian. Nor the fact he's now gone 237 pass attempts without an interception, breaking Brady Quinn's school record of 226 (set in 2006).

What doesn't jump off the stat sheet does jump off the tape. The clutch decisions. The Patrick Mahomes-type flips. The escapability to turn potential setbacks into wow plays. "Ian Book was as good tonight as anybody I've ever seen," said Brown, the longest-tenured active FBS coach at 32 years. "We couldn't tackle him. We harassed him. We had people around him. There could have been six sacks. We could not get him on the ground. "Then he made some unbelievable plays on third down. I don't know if he's in the Heisman race or not, but he should be." - South Bend Tribune

Ian Book kept No. 2 Notre Dame's offense moving while the Fighting Irish defense locked down Sam Howell and No. 25 North Carolina's potent offense for the final three quarters in a 31-17 victory on Friday. Book threw for 279 yards and a score and ran for 48 yards for the Fighting Irish (9-0, 8-0 ACC, No. 2 CFP), using his mobility and elusiveness to keep plays alive on a night when both offenses frequently faced long fields.

Receiver Ben Skowronek got Notre Dame its first lead with his 13-yard run around the right side midway through the third quarter. Kyren Williams ran for 124 yards - including a 47-yarder with about 5 1/2 minutes left as the Irish burned clock and sealed the game Williams closed that drive with his second rushing TD, a clinching 1-yarder with 1:20 left that kept the Fighting Irish alone atop the ACC standings ahead of No. 4 Clemson and No. 10 Miami. More impressively, though, was a defensive effort that forced Howell and the high-scoring Tar Heels to work for every gain after the opening quarter. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Even when he was significantly undersized relative to his position, Notre Dame tight end Tommy Tremble aspired to be an overpowering football player. "My dad taught me that," Tommy said about Greg Tremble, who starred as a safety for the University of Georgia in the late '90s. "He said, 'Never be scared of contact. The more scared you are, the more hurt you are going to be." Playing running back and defense growing up inspired Tremble to embrace contact. Tremble impressed as a defensive player so much that Michigan, Purdue and Mississippi State were among Power Five programs to offer him a scholarship as a linebacker during his recruitment.

After he chose to play offense, Tremble needed time to develop physically before that mentality translated in college. Recruiting analysts perceived Tremble as a one-dimensional receiving threat when he joined the Irish in 2018. Their assessments proved to be correct through Tremble's first two seasons. To effectively develop into a complete tight end, Tremble needed to add a substantial amount of weight. He said he arrived at Notre Dame around 205-210 pounds. He did not play as a true freshman. In Tremble's second season last year, the Irish primarily used him in passing situations. "I couldn't really get that chance to be that dominant blocker," Tremble said. "But I always had that physical mindset. I never really lost that." - South Bend Tribune

An offensive line being trumpeted as the nation's best by many observers will have the quality of its depth tested this week. First reported by Irish Illustrated on Sunday morning, Notre Dame starting right guard Tommy Kraemer will join injured center Jarrett Patterson on the sideline after Kraemer reportedly underwent an emergency appendectomy on Friday night. Kraemer is a grad senior and fourth-year starter, moving inside to guard in 2018 after playing right tackle his sophomore season on the 2017 Joe Moore Award-winning Irish offensive line. The 6-foot-6, 317-pounder missed the final six games of the 2019 season with a knee injury suffered in a 45-14 loss at Michigan. Versatile senior Josh Lugg is the leading candidate to replace Kraemer. - Indianapolis Star/News

Notre Dame starting center Jarrett Patterson is expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to multiple reports Monday. Irish Illustrated first reported Patterson will need surgery on a left foot injury that occurred in Saturday's 45-31 win at Boston College. Notre Dame officials had not confirmed the news by Monday evening. The loss of Patterson, a junior, is a blow to the middle of the Irish offensive line. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Patterson started the previous 21 games at center for what has become one of the best offensive lines in the country. No. 2 Notre Dame (8-0, 7-0 ACC) entered this week, which the Irish have off, ranked No. 17 in the FBS in rushing offense with 234 yards per game. Only 19 FBS teams that have played at least five games have allowed fewer sacks per game than Notre Dame's 1.75. - South Bend Tribune

Ian Book passed for three touchdowns and ran for another and No. 2 Notre Dame overcame an early deficit to roll to a 45-31 victory over Boston College on Saturday. The Fighting Irish's eighth straight win in the series between the FBS's only Catholic institutions gave coach Brian Kelly his 100th career victory at the school, tying him with Lou Holtz for second all-time. He is now just five behind coach Knute Rockne. Coming off a thrilling victory against Clemson, Notre Dame (8-0, 7-0 ACC) racked up a season-high 561 total yards against BC led by Book, who finished 20 of 27 for 283 yards.

He also ran for a 85 yards and a touchdown. Ben Skowronek caught all three of Book's TD passes, but also had one of three Notre Dame fumbles on the day. C'Bo Flemister ran for two touchdowns before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent left leg injury. Phil Jurkovec, a transfer from Notre Dame playing against his former team for the first time, finished 18 of 40 for 272 yards, a touchdown and interception for Boston College (5-4, 4-4). The Eagles hung tough in the first half, recovering a pair of Notre Dame fumbles, but they scored only six points of the miscues. Their defense also had few answers for Book, who took advantage of the Irish's length at receiver throughout the game to produce five pass plays of 20 or more yards. - AP College Football
