Notre Dame survived Florida State backup quarterback McKenzie Milton's unlikely comeback on an emotional night when the Seminoles honored Bobby Bowden. Jonathan Doerer made a 41-yard field goal in overtime and No. 9 Notre Dame escaped with a 41-38 victor y after Florida State overcame an 18-point deficit Sunday. Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald's 37-yard attempt sailed wide left on the first overtime possession, allowing Notre Dame to run a few plays and set up Doerer's kick. "What's most important i s going on the road, winning the opener against a team that presented a lot of challenges," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "We know we got work to do, but I like this team. We'll get better and we'll make a lot of improvement in week 2." Bowden, the coaching great who won two national titles with the Seminoles, died at 91 of pancreatic cancer Aug. 8.A logo of Bowden's trademark hat and the script "Bobby" was on the 25-yard line, and Florida State coaches also wore logos on their polo shirts. Florida State's Marching Chiefs spelled out "Bobby" on the field at halftime and played "Amazing Grace." Milton, the UCF grad transfer quarterback who hadn't played in a game since suffering a gruesome leg injury in November 2018, fired a 22-yard strike to Ja'Khi Douglas on his first pass. Florida State has lost five straight season openers and, while the Seminoles rallied, they can also point to three turnovers as well as nine penalties. Travis threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he also threw three interceptions - two to Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton. The Fighting Irish capitalized all three times by scoring touchdowns. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Marcus Freeman watches Notre Dame sophomore tight end Michael Mayer strut onto the practice field every day and sees a rare chess piece for which he still hasn't devised an answer. He also sees a potential position switch worth fantasizing and salivating over. "I keep telling him, 'Man, come on to the dark side.'" the Irish first-year defensive coordinator said of his would-be defensive end project."I don't think (offensive coordinator) Tommy (Rees) is going to let that happen. God, he is a great football player. And the best part about it is we have to have him for two more years." The 6-foot-5, 251-pound Mayer actually doubled as an elite defensive end at Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Ky., racking up 99 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and four interceptions for a team that went 15-0 his senior season and 44-1 over his final three years, winning two Kentucky Class 5A state titles. "I think it was more of a personal decision on which one do I like m ore?" Mayer said of his ultimate college/pro position trajectory. "Which one do I have more fun with? Which one can I play in the league with? "I think I enjoy tight end a little bit more. I enjoy catching touchdowns more. Pancaking people. Running route s. Stuff like that. So I just decided if I'm going to pick this, let's stick with it, work with it and that's what I've been doing." - Indianapolis Star/News

Hamilton is joined by Fighting Irish teammates Cain Madden, a guard who transferred from Marshall in the offseason, and running back Kyren Williams, who made the team as an all -purpose player. Brian Kelly doesn't want to divulge too many details on the possibilities for Notre Dame's defensive line. After reporters watched a full practice Thursday inside Notre Dame Stadium, the Irish head football coach recognized that a lot of different combin ations were on display. "We hope that, obviously, we don't have a scouting report out there," Kelly said after preseason practice No. 12 and 17 days before the season opener at Florida State on Sept. 5. "But it speaks for itself, right? We're going to mo ve guys around and they're going to be difficult to block." Spoiler for the Seminoles: Find Rylie Mills. The sophomore defensive tackle created more disruption than any other defensive lineman on Notre Dame's roster during Thursday's practice. The 6-foot-5, 283-pound Mills should benefit greatly from the importance defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman has placed on versatility up front. Mills can provide value in a three-man front as a defensive end and a four-man front as a defensive tackle. "He' s a long player and his physicality lends itself to being able to play a few different positions for us," Kelly said. "You're going to see a guy like Rylie Mills really flourish in this system that Marcus runs." - South Bend Tribune

Virginia Tech receiver Kaleb Smith knew what the injury was before the trainers got to him. Smith's arm got tangled up when he tried to strip the ball from Pittsburgh corner Jason Pinnock coming out of halftime in a late-season matchup between the ACC ri vals. After Pinnock picked off Hendon Hooker down the Hokies' sideline, he avoided a couple would-be tacklers and bounced the ball back toward midfield. Smith ran a deep route and was 20 yards behind the play, but he never considered giving up on the pla y. "He had a wide-open lane to a touchdown," Smith said at Virginia Tech's media day. "I turned on the jets and tried to strip the ball, and my arm got stuck in there. It popped out."The arm hung down and Smith said it was completely numb until th e training staff popped it back in. It was the same feeling Smith had when he tore his labrum as a senior at Louisa County. "I tore the back of the labrum as a senior, this time it tore the front," Smith said, indicating the spots on his left shoulder. S mith knew what was next - surgery and an extended rehab period that would keep him sidelined for four to eight months. He was out five and a half months this time around. "I was cleared on May 5," Smith said, with a smile. "That date with all the therapy you go through, you got it circled on the calendar." - Roanoke Times

When Alabama fans pour into Bryant-Denny Stadium for the Tide's home opener Sept. 11 and start thumbing through the game program, a name might look out of place. DeVonta Smith. One of the most decorated players in Alabama history should be making his NFL debut a day later in Atlanta, making it unlikely the graduated 2020 Heisman Trophy winner will be participating in what will likely be a rout of FCS opponent Mercer. Instead, meet the new DeVonta Smith: a freshman defensive back from Ohio who wears No. 27.Smith -- listed as an inch shorter (6-feet) and 10 pounds heavier (185) than his record-breaking predecessor -- was a summer enrollee who opened fall camp with the safeties. Junior Jordan Battle had the privilege of practicing against the elder Smith the past two seasons and knows the same nickname cannot be used twice. "We try to shy away from calling him Smitty," he said Tuesday, "Because you know there's only one Smitty out there." Ohio's Smith initially committed to Ohio State before flipp ing to Alabama. The Cincinnati native was ranked as a four-star prospect and No. 257 nationally in 247 Sports' composite rankings. - Birmingham News

Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan is Notre Dame's starting quarterback. Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly announced the choice Saturday in a Twitter post after suggesting for the last week that a decision would be coming soon. Notre Dame opens Sept. 5 at Flori da State. Coan started for Wisconsin in 2019, leading the Badgers to the Big Ten title game. He completed 70% of his passes and threw for 2,727 yards and 18 touchdowns two seasons ago. Coan broke his foot before last season's abbreviated Big Ten schedule began in late October and did not play, losing the starting job to former blue-chip recruit Graham Mertz. Coan transferred in the offseason to Notre Dame, where the Irish were looking to replace long-time starter Ian Book, who was drafted in the fourth round by New Orleans. - AP College Football

The Wisconsin grad transfer won't be able to escape comparisons to the starting quarterback who came before him at Notre Dame, Ian Book, or the freshman quarterback who has been pitched as the next big thing for the Irish, Tyler Buchner. Fair or not, Coa n's Notre Dame legacy will be measured by how he bridges the gap between those two quarterbacks. Coan can fortify his own path if he brings something to the Notre Dame offense that Book didn't as the winningest quarterback in program history. Coan had mo ments as a Wisconsin starter in 2019 that showed he could make plays with his arm and be a steady hand in winning games. Can he be decisive in the Irish offense, make the right decisions in the red zone and help stretch the field? If Coan can't meet thos e needs, the Notre Dame fan base will once again be pining to see what's next behind Coan whether Kelly's ready to make that decision or not. - Indianapolis Star/News

Hunter Spears came to Notre Dame with an unfortunate injury history. Spears, who was recruited as a defensive lineman out of Sachse (Texas) High in the 2019 class, tore the ACL in his left knee twice in 19 months with the latter injury coming near the en d of his senior season. Spears was never able to escape that injury history at Notre Dame. On Thursday afternoon, Spears announced on social media he has taken a medical retirement from football. The move will allow him to remain on scholarship at Notre Dame without participating in practices and games."I have been through a lot in these last 4 years from countless knee surgeries to being a part of a team in the College Football Playoff," Spears wrote in his social media statement. "The game I lo ve so much, however, has taken an immense toll on my body both physically and mentally. After consulting with the program's medical team and coaching staff, I have decided that it is in my best interest to medically retire from football." Spears will no longer count against Notre Dame's scholarship limit, which was pushed to 87 to allow nose guard Kurt Hinish and kicker Jonathan Doerer to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility with the NCAA's COVID-19 exemption. The Irish now have 84 players on scholarship without Spears. - South Bend Tribune

On the door to his room back in St. Louis hangs a mirror Kyren Williams had to face, wanted to reckon with every morning before he'd confront whatever the world had for him that day. It was an integral part of the process that made a light-switch moment in the spring of 2020 stick, a quarantine revelation that the Notre Dame running back wasn't a transfer portal escapee waiting to happen but a player about to ascend with still no ceiling in sight. "It's all a mindset," Williams said in July, back in the flow of summer school and players-only-practices at Notre Dame. "It still is about that. My mindset has never changed since the end of the season last year. "It's always to be the best version of me each and every day. So when there's work to put in, I' ll be able to make sure that my dreams come true."That's who I am. That's how I want to live my life. I feel like if I just keep doing that, that's going to lead me to where I want to be." Where Williams is heading into August training camp is a 5 -foot-9, 195-pound junior coming off a rushing season (1,125 on 211 carries) 55 yards shy of one of the top 10 in school history. His 13 rushing touchdowns in 2020 were the most in a season by an Irish running back in the 2000s and four off the school re cord 17 shared by former All-Americans Allen Pinkett (1984) and Vagas Ferguson (1979). - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams was selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award last season, so it was basically a given that he'd make the 2021 preseason watch list for the award that honors college football's top running back. That officially happened Wednesday with Williams joining 81 other running backs on the watch list. Williams was named ACC Rookie of the Year as a sophomore last season for accumulating 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns on 211 carries and 313 yards and one to uchdown on 35 catches. No Notre Dame running back has ever won the Doak Walker Award, which was created in 1990. Alabama running back Najee Harris won the award last season. - South Bend Tribune

A sign that college football season is almost here has arrived. It's the annual blitz of preseason watch lists for college football's top awards. The watch list spree began in earnest Monday and will continue through the end of next week. ND Insider will track all of the Notre Dame mentions below. Kyle Hamilton was named to his first preseason watch list of the year Monday. It certainly won't be his last. Notre Dame's junior safety was one of 90 players recognized on the Bednarik Award watch list for th e 2021 season. The Bednarik Award has identified the best defensive player in college football every year since 1995. Hamilton, who recorded 63 tackles, seven pass breakups, 4.5 tackles for a loss and one interception as a sophomore, was one of 18 semifi nalists last season for the Bednarik Award, which was given to Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. Former Irish linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was one of the three finalists alongside Collins. - South Bend Tribune

Marshall offensive guard Cain Madden on Friday afternoon verbally committed to play for the Irish in 2021 as he completed his multi-day visit to the Notre Dame campus. It'll be the former walk-on's and three-year starter's sixth collegiate season, courte sy of the NCAA's COVID exemption and the 6-foot-3, 313-pounder's desire to hone his NFL Draft appeal. The Irish (10-2 in 2020) open the season Sept. 5 at Florida State, the team Madden visited early in the week and the program originally considered the h eavy favorite to land the South Webster, Ohio, product until the Irish shifted that momentum. Madden, nicknamed "Dump Truck," brings coveted experience to an Irish offensive line that lost four starters, including two All-Americans, off a unit that was o ne of three finalists in 2020 for the Joe Moore Award for O-line excellence. - South Bend Tribune

Marshall's offensive line took a massive hit on Wednesday afternoon. How big? Oh, about a 315-pound All-American type of hit. Senior Cain Madden, who went from walk-on to All-American during his time with the Thundering Herd, announced on social media th at he was entering the NCAA transfer portal. "After much thought and prayer, I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal," Madden's message said. "I am genuinely grateful for the five years at Marshall where I have been able to grow and cultiva te my skills both on and off the field. "Thank you to all my coaches, teammates, athletic staff, and especially Herd Nation for supporting me on the football and academic journey. I will forever be a #SonOfMarshall."
