Multiple sources told The Times that the Big Ten will not be adding another Pac-12 school at this time. It would have been a natural assumption that a pairing of Oregon and Washington would follow their longtime conference brethren, but that is off the Big Ten's board for now. Maybe the preferences of USC and UCLA - Fox's priority because of the the brands and the Los Angeles market - have something to do with that?. That means Notre Dame will be the next driver in any movement with the Big Ten, which has long coveted the Fighting Irish for all of the obvious reasons - brand power, football tradition, academic reputation and location.

If Notre Dame rebuffs the Big Ten and elects to stay independent in football and play other sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference, it's possible the Big Ten takes a pause and continues to consider the remaining Pac-12 brands and ACC brands that fit the Big Ten model, such as North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia Tech. But, make no mistake, Notre Dame is the ultimate get and the Big Ten has more to offer the Irish than ever before - a chance to share a conference with historic rival USC along with other rivals Michigan, Purdue and Michigan State; a chance to shoot its take from media rights into a new stratosphere; and a chance to assure itself of a rightful place at the power brokers' table going forward. Notre Dame has to be getting the itch. If it isn't, its longtime TV partner NBC will have good reason to nudge it into considering the Big Ten's offer. Reports are that NBC wants a Big Ten game as part of the conference's new media rights package. - Los Angeles Times

"Hartman for The Heisman." It's got a nice ring to it, as quarterback Sam Hartman enters what will likely be his final season at Wake Forest. As the summer heats up, the preseason predictions are starting to come out. One recent publication had Hartman's odds for winning the coveted award; he was listed by DraftKings Sportsbook in the top 15 for favorites to win the award. Also, SouthernPickskin.com is touting Hartman as a candidate. The top five picks to win the Heisman, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, are quarterback C.J. Stroud (Ohio State), quarterback Bryce Young (Alabama), quarterback Caleb Williams (Southern Cal), running back Bijan Robinson (Texas) and quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson).

The Demon Deacons and the Tigers play on Sept. 24 in a key ACC game at Truist Field. Last season, Hartman accounted for 50 touchdowns (39 passing and 11 rushing) as the Deacons went 11-3 and won the ACC's Atlantic Division. He passed for just over 4,000 yards and had one of the best seasons by a quarterback in school history. His 50 total touchdowns were one less than Lamar Jackson of Louisville had in 2016 when Jackson won the Heisman. Jackson's 51 total touchdowns are the best in a season in ACC history. - Winston Salem Journal

The offseason hits keep on coming for Notre Dame's once-deep corps of running backs. Early-enrolled freshman Jadarian Price will miss the 2022 season after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, the school announced. After an impressive spring practice that included a star turn in the Blue-Gold Game, Price was injured during summer workouts. Logan Diggs, Notre Dame's top returning rusher at the position, underwent surgery in late April to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. Diggs, who rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman in 2021, could miss fall camp and then some, depending on what is typically a 4-6 month recovery period.

Their injuries open the door for another freshman, former Indiana signee Gi'Bran Payne, to compete for playing time after enrolling this summer. Payne, a four-star recruit from Cincinnati, will join holdovers Chris Tyree and Audric Estime in the battle for playing time after two-time 1,000-yard rusher Kyren Williams was drafted in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Rams. Williams has injury issues of his own, having undergone surgery to repair a broken foot in early June after suffering the injury during organized team activities. - South Bend Tribune

Like Iowa State's Will McDonald, Notre Dame defensive end Isaiah Foskey was wise to eschew the loaded 2022 crop of edge rushers and hold off for at least another year. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Foskey has a ton of scheme versatility. He could play with his hand in the dirt in a 4-3 or come off the edge standing up in a 3-4 and excel at both. The 2022 season offers him the chance to really break out and make a name for himself outside the shadow of other draft hopefuls at his position. - Irish Sports Daily

Notre Dame defensive back Brandon Joseph entered his third collegiate year with plenty of hype and 2022 NFL Draft first-round upside, but pundits cooled on him after a slow start with Northwestern. A fresh spot after transferring to Notre Dame should do him a world of good. He will have plenty of eyes on him after replacing 2022 first-round pick Kyle Hamilton. If he can even slightly replicate Hamilton's productions, that could be enough to merit an early round selection. - 247Sports.com

Wake Forest is coming off its best season (11-3) since 2006, with the Demon Deacons claiming their second divisional crown and a spot in the ACC Championship. It was a stunning turnaround for a program one year removed from a 4-5 season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While much of the offseason attention in the ACC is sure to focus on Clemson, Miami and N.C. State, it's hard to ignore a Wake team that returns 17 starters from last season, led by quarterback Sam Hartman, who enters the 2022 campaign just 497 yards shy of becoming the program's all-time passing leader. The defense returns a plethora of experience up front, including defensive lineman Rondell Bothroyd (8 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss). Another divisional crown could be in the mix again. - Orlando Sentinel

College football teams rarely get a one-year solution to a problem, much less a five-year solution. There's too much turnover, too much that can happen game-to-game and week-to-week, to discount a star player always there, always ready to do what he does. South Carolina had that, in every season since 2017. That reliability, that production, is now relegated to a sticker on the Northwest ramp of Williams-Brice Stadium, where it will certainly face its potential replacements most likely until the end of time, since it's highly unreasonable to think anyone will ever do better. "Parker White. Career points scored. 368." For the first time in a long time, someone other than White will trot onto the field to attempt a PAT or field goal for the Gamecocks this fall.

White's gone, trying to make his NFL dream a reality, and the Gamecocks are breaking in two new kickers. "Mitch Jeter, who's got a very strong leg and is off to a good start this spring, is obviously a big part of that competition," USC special teams coordinator Pete Lembo said during spring practice. "Alex Herrera is a great guy, who's worked extremely hard, very versatile, utility-type player for us." Jeter nor Herrera is "new," as in they just showed up. Each has been on the team for a while, Herrera walking on in 2019 and Jeter a scholarship kicker signed in 2020. - The Post and Courier

Virginia Tech coaches didn't hand out MVP awards after the spring game last week, but veteran wide receiver Kaleb Smith would have been a likely candidate if they did. Smith led all receivers with three catches for 103 yards with a pair of first quarter two touchdowns in the Maroon Team's 26-10 win. With fans keeping a watchful eye on Temple transfer Jadan Blue and a highly touted tandem of second year receivers (Da'Wain Lofton and Jaylen Jones), it was Smith who unexpectedly grabbed the spotlight. "I'm always (overlooked), but that never really gets me," the former preferred walk-on said. "As long as the guys in my locker room and the other guys on the coaching staff know what I can do, that's always been enough for me." Maroon team starting quarterback Grant Wells hit Smith in stride with a perfectly placed ball down the sidelines on the first score.

Smith beat Brion Murray in a footrace down the sideline to get open for the 47-yard touchdown. Smith showed similar breakaway speed on a 51-yard touchdown later in the quarter by beating Murray and safety Chamarri Conner over the top of the defense down the middle of the field. Wells connected with Smith again to put the Maroon Team up 17-0. The longest reception of Smith's career is 34-yards, but those deep routes in the spring game weren't outliers. He's proven to the new staff throughout spring camp that he can be a deep ball threat for new offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and crew. "He's consistently one of our top guys on our GPS speed barometer," Tech coach Brent Pry said. "He's one of those guys, maybe it doesn't look like he's moving fast, but he covers a lot of ground. He had a really good spring for us." - Roanoke Times

Sam Hartman's big day capped Wake Forest's best season in 15 years. Hartman tossed three touchdown passes, two of them to tight end Brandon Chapman, and the No. 17 Demon Deacons beat Rutgers 38-10 in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Friday to reach 11 wins for the second time in program history. Hartman completed 23 of 39 passes for 304 yards. He added 21 more yards rushing and pushed his touchdown total to 50 this season -- 39 passing and 11 rushing. He was named the winning team's most valuable player. "It's everything," Hartman said. "I'm just enjoying the moment." The Demon Deacons (11-3) controlled the game from the start, scoring on their first three drives and opening a double-digit lead just before halftime. It played out about as expected given Rutgers (5-8) was a late replacement for No. 25 Texas A&M. The Aggies pulled out because of a lack of available players due to injuries, opt-outs, transfers and COVID-19 issues. The NCAA gave Rutgers the first shot at filling the void because it had the highest Academic Progress Rate score of all the eligible 5-7 teams. - Wake Forest/AP College Football
