Wake Forest, coming of its best season under Coach Dave Clawson when it went 11-3, was predicted to finish third in the ACC's Atlantic Division in a preseason media poll. The poll was conducted by 164 journalists at the ACC kickoff last week in Charlotte. The Demon Deacons, who won the Atlantic Division but lost to Pittsburgh in the ACC championship game, are predicted to finish behind Clemson and N.C. State in the division.

Clemson, which was picked to win the conference for the seventh time in the past eight seasons, had 111 first-place votes with N.C. State 44 and Wake Forest managed six first-place votes. The Tigers recorded their 11th consecutive double-digit win season with a 10-3 finish in 2021. Miami was picked to finish atop the Coastal Division following a 7-5 season that included wins in five of its final six games. The defending ACC champion Panthers were picked second followed by North Carolina in third. - Winston Salem Journal

Ty Washington won't need a phasing-in period for any of the multiple uses of the tight end at Arkansas. The polished 6-2, 240-pounder did it all at Lee County (Ga.) as a three-year starter. "I played everywhere," Washington said. "I was split out. Outside, inside, hand in the ground, as a fullback, behind the line. It didn't really matter. I played every way that they needed me." When the Kendal Briles offense is in full flow, the tight end is all over the place, as an in-line blocker, a split-out pass catcher or a motioning H-back lead blocker. "It's the same thing here really, just everywhere," Washington said. "It hasn't changed. That makes it easier on me, not just having to learn just one position, hand down or something. I know everything about the playbook and knowing all the things I have to do, from slot, hand in the ground, fullback, tight end. That makes it easier."

Washington played prep ball at a Class 6A school that led the state of Georgia with 40 graduates on college football rosters in 2019. Coach Dean Fabrizio felt the impact of Washington's loss while going through spring drills with the Trojans. "What Tyrus does, and we're really feeling that now, was he fills the role of three guys," Fabrizio said. "He's got the ability to put his hand in the ground next to a tackle and down block and double team people. He's got the ability to line up in the backfield and kick people out or isolate on people. And he's got the ball skills to split out wide and catch the ball, too. "So he really creates a big personnel advantage for an offensive coach...There's a lot of guys who run out there and catch balls. A lot of guys can put their hand on the ground and block. There ain't a lot who can do both." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Sophomore tight end Mitchell Evans suffered a broken foot during offseason workouts and underwent surgery on Thursday morning to repair the fifth metatarsal bone on the outside of his foot, Notre Dame announced. Evans, who had two receptions last season while appearing in all 13 games, was projected along with Kevin Bauman as the primary backups to All-American tight end Michael Mayer. According to the release, the Irish consider Evans probable to return to play at some point in the fall.

According to MountSinai.org, surgery on a fifth metatarsal typically requires a cast to be worn for 6-8 weeks. The fifth metatarsal is the most commonly fractured of the five metatarsal bones in the foot, according to the site. A three-star recruit from Wadsworth (Ohio) High School, Evans is 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds and impressed the coaching staff this spring with his downfield receiving ability. "He's got a chance to be a special route runner," new tight ends coach Gerad Parker said in April. "Mitch has got really unlimited resources in the pass game." - South Bend Tribune
