Carson Strong passed for 395 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns and Nevada pulled away after halftime to beat Hawaii 34-17 in Mountain West Conference play on Saturday. The Wolf Pack (5-1, 2-0) scored first on a Brandon Talton 23-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, but the lead lasted just one play after Dae Dae Hunter took a first-down handoff and raced 75 yards to the end zone for Hawaii (3-4, 1-2). Nevada went up 10-7 on Toa Taua's 6-yard TD run with 12:58 left in the second quarter, but again the lead lasted one play after Hunter took a first-down handoff 81 yards for a TD.

The Wolf Pack answered with a 10-yard TD run by Taua for a 17-14 lead. Both teams added field goals before halftime. Strong took over in the third quarter for Nevada, throwing scoring passes of 28 yards to Romeo Doubs and a 3-yarder to Tory Horton, as the Wolf Pack upped their avantage to 34-17 with 2:25 left in the period. Strong completed 34 of 54 passes. Cole Turner had 12 catches for 175 yards. Hunter rushed for 174 yards and the two long TDs on just eight carries - all in the first half - for the Rainbow Warriors.   Carson Strong threw a career-high six touchdown passes - four in the second quarter - and Nevada cruised to a 55-28 win over New Mexico State on Saturday night. Strong, who did not play in the fourth quarter, finished 25-of-32 passing for 377 yards with one interception. But Strong got off to a rocky start. He threw an interception on Nevada's first offensive play from scrimmage and the Wolf Pack (4-1) went three-and-out on three of the next four drives and trailed 7-3 early in the second quarter before hitting Toa Taua, Justin Lockhart, Melquan Stovall and Cole Turner before halftime.

Nevada took the opening kick of the second half and Turner's 3-yard scoring catch capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive that made it 38-3. Strong connected with Henry Ballard for a 33-yard touchdown about four minutes later and cornerback BerDale Robins ripped the ball from New Mexico State's Jared Wyatt and raced 25 yards for a score to give Nevada a 52-3 lead going into the fourth quarter. Jonah Johnson completed 38 of 62 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for the Aggies. His 3-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt with 8:59 left in the first quarter opened the scoring. New Mexico State (1-6), an FBS Independent, has lost three in a row. - Nevada/AP College Football

Carson Strong threw for 263 yards and a touchdown, Toa Taua rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Nevada defeated Boise State 41-31 on Saturday. Nevada (4-1, 1-0), the pre-season favorite to win the Mountain West Conference's West division, snapped a six-game losing streak to the Broncos, dating back to 2010. Nevada last won in Boise in 1997. While Nevada coach Jay Norvell was all smiles after the game, he didn't seem surprised at the result. He was more ecstatic about the way his team won rather than breaking a long losing streak. "This is the first game this season where we've really complemented each other," Norvell said. "When the defense made a big play, the offense scored, and vice versa. That's the style of football we like to play - physical and hard, fearless. That's what we want, and now we want to build on that." Boise State (2-3, 1-1) is off to its slowest start since 2001 when it also started 2-3 before finishing the season 8-4. It's also the first time since 2015 the Broncos have lost consecutive home games. - Nevada/AP College Football

Nevada's whirlwind month as vagabonds ended with a very satisfying win. Carson Strong threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolf Pack to a 22-17 victory over California on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Nevada has been forced to adapt because of smoke from wildfires that made it impossible to practice outdoors on campus. That forced the Wolf Pack to travel nearly 2,000 miles and practice on basketball courts, conventions centers and even a hotel parking garage. "What we've had to go through this last month just to prepare to play was something - seven different fields we practiced on, we traveled 1,953 miles to be exact to different places to practice," coach Jay Norvell said. "We never cheated the kids on their preparation. We did everything we needed to do to get ready for this game. We didn't cut any corners. Boy did they respond." Strong connected on TDs to Romeo Doubs and Elijah Cooks for a happy homecoming to Northern California.

Strong grew up about an hour away from Memorial Stadium, attending Cal games and camps. But after a knee injury his senior year in high school in Vacaville the Bears didn't recruit him and he has turned into a star at Nevada. "I always want to win no matter what but this one is pretty sweet," Strong said. "This is probably my favorite one." Cal scored TDs on its first two drives but then stalled, going three-and-out on the next four drives. While the Bears couldn't move the ball, Nevada scored 22 straight points. The Wolf Pack cut the deficit to 14-13 at the half on a pair of field goals from Brandon Talton and Strong's 43-yard TD pass to Dobbs. Strong then put together an impressive drive to open the second half to give the Wolf Pack the lead for good. He completed a 17-yard pass to Cole Turner on third and 17, a 46-yarder to Tory Horton on third-and-9 and then a 16-yard TD to Cooks on the next play to make it 19-14. - Nevada/AP College Football

For the longest time, it didn't much matter who played quarterback for Nevada when the Wolf Pack faced Cal. Through 1945, the Golden Bears routinely had their way with Nevada, posting wins by scores like 81-6, 79-7 and 62-0, the latter included among 20 shutout victories Cal recorded against its neighbor to the east. After just one game over the next 65 years, a couple of prolific Nevada quarterbacks flipped the script in the two most recent meetings. In 2010, Colin Kaepernick powered the Wolf Pack to a 52-31 rout of Cal in Reno. Two years later, Nevada visited Berkeley on the occasion of Memorial Stadium's reopening and Cody Fajardo spoiled the party, leading the visitors to a 31-24 win.

The teams square off again Saturday night in the season opener at Memorial Stadium, their first meeting since 2012. And once again, the Wolf Pack will come at the Bears with a gifted quarterback. Carson Strong, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior from Vacaville, is projected as a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He's not a runner, but Strong passed for 2,858 yards and 27 touchdowns and was intercepted on barely 1 percent of his pass attempts in a nine-game 2020 schedule. "He's got special arm talent that not too many guys have," said Elijah Hicks, Cal's fifth-year senior safety. Cal defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon, said watching film in preparation to play Strong has aged him: "I started getting the gray whiskers the last couple days." - Oakland Tribune

The Colorado Buffaloes foiled the state's first family of football. Freshman quarterback Brendon Lewis and the rest of the Buffs rumbled past Northern Colorado 35-7 Friday night, spoiling former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey's college head coaching debut. "I was excited to coach," said McCaffrey, who coached at powerhouse Valor Christian High School from 2018-19 before he was hired at UNC 20 months ago. "Again, the results certainly weren't what we were hoping for. But I'd rather play football and lose than not play football." McCaffrey, whose Bears (0-1) sat out 2020 because of the pandemic, had one son - Max - with him on the sideline serving as his offensive coordinator and another - Dylan, a transfer from Michigan - at quarterback. It was the Bears' defensive wrinkles that befuddled the Buffs early on before Colorado deciphered the schemes and turned a 14-0 halftime lead into a runaway. "I do take my hat off to Coach McCaffrey and that team that he's coaching," Colorado coach Karl Dorrell said. "For him not to have a season-and a-half and for them to play the way they did, I thought they fought really, really hard." In his first start, Lewis completed 10 of 15 passes for 102 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to sliding freshman Montana Lemorious-Craig, and ran eight times for 44 yards. - Colorado/AP College Football

Chris Ault knows a thing of two about NFL quarterbacks. During his time at Nevada, he recruited or developed four that reached that level, including Colin Kaepernick, Jeff Rowe, John Dutton and David Fales, each spending at least one year at Nevada under Ault. The Hall of Fame coach also spent two seasons as an offensive consultant for the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. He can see NFL talent when it presents itself, and when Ault first saw current Wolf Pack quarterback Carson Strong, he knew the Wolf Pack had something special.

"I think the world of Carson Strong," Ault told Nevada Sports Net. "He's come so far. He has tremendous poise. He's got a great arm. There's no question he is an NFL quarterback. There's no question about it because of the strength of his arm. ... We have one of the best wide receiver corps in the country, with any school. But I think Carson is the one who makes those guys go. He makes them better by his performance, and he's the right guy. He's very confident. He's led the team to some great wins. He knows what's excepted of him. And he knows the offense. That's very similar to our 2010 team with the quarterback situation being like it is." - NevadaSportsnet.com
