  09/04/21 - QB Carson StrongrJr/2022, Nevada

For the longest time, it didn't much matter who played quarterback for Nevada when the Wolf Pack faced Cal. Through 1945, the Golden Bears routinely had their way with Nevada, posting wins by scores like 81-6, 79-7 and 62-0, the latter included among 20 shutout victories Cal recorded against its neighbor to the east. After just one game over the next 65 years, a couple of prolific Nevada quarterbacks flipped the script in the two most recent meetings. In 2010, Colin Kaepernick powered the Wolf Pack to a 52-31 rout of Cal in Reno. Two years later, Nevada visited Berkeley on the occasion of Memorial Stadium's reopening and Cody Fajardo spoiled the party, leading the visitors to a 31-24 win.

The teams square off again Saturday night in the season opener at Memorial Stadium, their first meeting since 2012. And once again, the Wolf Pack will come at the Bears with a gifted quarterback. Carson Strong, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior from Vacaville, is projected as a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He's not a runner, but Strong passed for 2,858 yards and 27 touchdowns and was intercepted on barely 1 percent of his pass attempts in a nine-game 2020 schedule. "He's got special arm talent that not too many guys have," said Elijah Hicks, Cal's fifth-year senior safety. Cal defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon, said watching film in preparation to play Strong has aged him: "I started getting the gray whiskers the last couple days." - Oakland Tribune
