Freezing temperatures couldn't chill Missouri on Saturday night. Brady Cook tossed three touchdown passes, Luther Burden and Cody Schrader both scored twice and the Tigers rolled to a 45-14 victory over New Mexico State. The Aggies (4-6) showed spark on their opening drive with quarterback Diego Pavia completing his first three passes for 30 yards and running back Jamoni Jones chipping in 9 yards on the ground. But the New Mexico State drive stalled at the Missouri 36 as the Tigers' defense began to impose its will, forcing seven consecutive incompletions before Pavia completed his next pass. The Tigers' offense, for a change, clicked from the opening drive. Cook led an 11-play scoring drive capped off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Burden. The freshman receiver took the tunnel screen from Cook and hurdled a defender in reaching the end zone, putting the Tigers (5-6) on top 7-0. Cook and the offense used a more methodical approach on the team's next possession, embarking on a 17-play, 81-yard drive that ended with Cody Schrader's 2-yard touchdown run. Schrader, a senior transfer from Division II Truman State, rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries and caught four passes for 47 yards.

Cook connected with tight end Ryan Hoerstkamp for a 32-yard touchdown with 4:28 left in the second quarter and the Tigers led 21-0. The Aggies scored in the third quarter thanks to a big play from backup freshman quarterback Gavin Frakes. After an injury briefly knocked Pavia out of the game, Frakes found Eric Marsh for 21 yards on fourth-and-2 from the Missouri 40-yard line. Pavia returned to the game and two plays later he tossed a pitch on the option to tailback Star Thomas for a 10-yard touchdown run. Burden scored his second touchdown late in the third quarter, taking a pop pass on a jet sweep from Cook and weaving 14 yards into the end zone to put the Tigers on top 35-7. Cook contributed three catches for 35 yards and two scores. He also ran three times for 12 yards. Receiver Barrett Banister paced the Tigers with seven catches for 91 yards, both career highs for the senior in his sixth season with Missouri. Cook completed 19 of 27 passes for 251 yards with three touchdowns, while leading the Tigers with 71 yards rushing on seven carries. Missouri's defense even got involved in the scoring action when sophomore defensive back Daylan Carnell intercepted a pass from Pavia and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 42-7. - Missouri/AP College Football

Brady Cook ran for a touchdown and directed three long, first-half scoring drives as Missouri built a 17-0 lead on the way to its fourth straight win over No. 25 South Carolina, 23-10, on Saturday night. Receiver Dominic Lovett had career highs with 10 catches for 148 yards while the Tigers' defense had 11 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and held the Gamecocks (5-3, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) to 203 total yards. The Tigers (4-4, 2-3) won their second straight after starting league play 0-3. Missouri beat a ranked opponent for the first time since its 45-41 win over No. 17 LSU on Oct. 10, 2020. It ended the Gamecocks four-game win streak - and also ended their stay in the national rankings after getting in this past week for the first time in four years.

Cook proved a steady hand against a South Carolina defense that was active and opportunistic in beating No. 19 Kentucky on Oct. 8 and Texas A&M last week. Cook led a 15-play, 96-yard scoring drive that took up most of the first quarter and which he ended with his 3-yard burst to the end zone. The Tigers went on another lengthy drive on their next possession, this one going 84 yards in 10 plays and finishing with Cody Schrader's 1-yard run. Missouri looked to make it three-straight touchdown drives as it had a first-and-goal on the South Carolina 3. But the Gamecocks forced Cook into a couple of incompletes before settling for Harrison Mevis' 19-yard field goal and a 17-0 lead. The Gamecocks could not dig themselves out of that hole and finished with its fewest points since losing to No. 1 Georgia 48-7 on Sept. 17. Quarterback Spencer Rattler scored the team's lone touchdown on a 7-yard run right before halftime. - Missouri/AP College Football

Luther Burden III had touchdowns on the ground and through the air, Missouri kept Vanderbilt's offense off the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter, and the Tigers held on for a nerve-wracking 17-14 victory Saturday. Mike Wright, who took over when Commodores quarterback AJ Swann left with an illness, found Gamarian Carter for an 80-yard touchdown reception with 3:59 to go, and Vanderbilt's first offensive points in more than eight quarters gave Clark Lea's team a chance of ending a 24-game conference losing streak. Vanderbilt (3-5, 0-4) got the ball back with just under 3 minutes to go and got a quick first down after a penalty. But a third-down throw to Ben Bresnahan that appeared to give the Commodores a first down was moved back a yard on review, bringing up fourth-and-1, and Ray Davis was stuffed at the line of scrimmage to effectively end the game.

Brady Cook had 211 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception, and Cody Schrader came off the bench to run 14 times for 84 yards, as the Tigers (3-4, 1-4 SEC) beat Vanderbilt for the sixth time in the last seven meetings. The Tigers needed just six plays to take a 7-0 lead when Burden followed a 29-yard catch by Barrett Banister with a 35-yard TD reception. But that offensive efficiency was in short supply for both teams most of the game. The Commodores missed a field goal wide left. Then, just before halftime, Swann threw an interception in the Missouri end zone. At one point in between, the two teams combined to go three-and-out on five straight drives. Missouri finally ended the dubious streak when Burden scored from 10 yards out, and Harrison Mevis capped an expertly run 2-minute drill by tacking on a 39-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 17-0 lead at the break. - Missouri/AP College Football

Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz delivered unfortunate news for Missouri's offensive line on Tuesday. Zeke Powell, who had been the team's starting right tackle, is out for the season after being injured against Auburn. "He's a tough young man, we're going to be here for him," Drinkwitz said. "We're chasing two dreams and we're definitely going to make sure that life outside of the game is taken care of." Powell has no further eligibility, so the injury will effectively end his college football career. - Columbia Daily Tribune

  09/24/22 - Drew PynerJr/2026, Missouri + More +

Drew Pyne threw three touchdown passes and Notre Dame finally clicked on offense in a 45-32 victory over North Carolina on Saturday. Audric Estime rushed for two touchdowns and 134 yards and Chris Tyree ran for 80 yards and a score for the Fighting Irish (2-2). Pyne completed 24 of 34 passes for 289 yards. The outcome resulted in the first road win under first-year coach Marcus Freeman. The Tar Heels (3-1) were denied their first 4-0 start to a season since 1997. North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye threw five touchdown passes, two going to Josh Downs in the first half and two more – covering 144 yards - to Antoine Green in the second half. Maye was 17-for-32 for 301 yards.

Pyne threw second-quarter touchdown passes of 10 yards to Michael Mayer and 30 yards to Lorenzo Styles. The Irish led 24-14 at halftime after Blake Grupe's 40-yard field goal with 23 seconds left. Notre Dame held a 301-161 edge in total yards in the first half. The Irish went 75 yards in six plays to open the second half and extended the margin to 31-14 on Pyne's 29-yard pass play to Logan Diggs, who was alone along the sideline and jogged into the end zone. North Carolina fumbled on its first second-half snap when Maye dropped the ball in pass formation, giving the Irish the ball at the Tar Heels' 15. One play after a fourth-down defensive pass interference penalty followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Tar Heels coach Mack Brown, Notre Dame converted on Estime's 1-yard lunge. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  09/17/22 - Drew PynerJr/2026, Missouri + More +

Drew Pyne passed for two touchdowns and 150 yards in his first career start and Notre Dame overcame numerous mistakes to beat California 24-17 Saturday to give Irish coach Marcus Freeman his first victory. The Irish (1-2) outscored Cal (2-1) 10-0 in the fourth quarter to avoid becoming just the third Notre Dame squad to start a season 0-3. The Irish (1-2), who started the season ranked No. 5, had blown leads three times, made sure there was no second-half letdown this time. But it wasn't over until the last play. On fourth-and-13 from the Notre Dame 35, Cal's Jack Plummer threw the ball into the end zone. The ball bounced off several players and Bears receiver Jeremiah Hunter nearly pulled it in, but the ball landed on the grass. The Irish opened a 24-17 lead with 9:16 remaining on a 6-yard pass from Pyne to Michael Mayer, just Mayer's second catch of the day. The touchdown was set up when Pyne threw a short pass to tailback Audric Esitime, and he sprinted for a 36-yard gain before tripping at the 6-yard line.

The Bears drove to the Notre Dame 22 midway through the fourth quarter but couldn't get any closer. Plummer threw three straight incompletions, then was sacked by Isaiah Foskey for a 10-yard loss with 6:30 left. Cal got the ball again on their own 7-yard line, but on third-and-10 Jack Plummer was sacked for a 5-yard loss. It looked as though Notre Dame had put the game away when cornerback Clarence Lewis picked off a pass from Plummer, but the Bears got one more chance when J.D. Bertrant was called for targeting. Pyne, playing because Tyler Buchner sustained a season-ending shoulder injury last week, was 17-of-23 passing. Chris Tyree rushed for 64 yards on 17 carries and had five catches for 44 yards. Plummer was 16 of 37 for 184 yards passing. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

The Missouri Tigers made it a clear priority to get wide receiver Luther Burden III more involved in the team's final tuneup before entering SEC play, and the move paid immediate dividends in Saturday's 34-17 victory over Abilene Christian. After the Tigers' defense forced a three-and-out on the Wildcats' opening drive of the game, Burden received the ensuing punt on a bounce along the left sideline at his own 22-yard line, then followed his blockers across the field before racing down the right stripe for a 78-yard score. That was exactly the spark the Tigers (2-1) were hoping for from Burden, according to quarterback Brady Cook. "That's huge when you open up the game with that," Cook said. "It just gives us a layer of confidence going out for that first drive, so it was huge." The Tigers struggled finding ways to get Burden the ball a week ago in a 40-12 loss at Kansas State when he finished with just two touches for 9 yards.

Coach Eliah Drinkwitz on Saturday inserted the freshman in as a punt returner and wildcat quarterback as a means of getting Burden more touches. Late in the first quarter, Burden returned a punt 22 yards before a hard tackle from Wildcats punter Logan Burke, who grabbed Burden by the shoulder pads in pulling him toward the sideline. There was no foul on the play after officials picked up a flag for a facemask penalty, but Burden left for the locker room after an examination on the sideline. He returned in the second quarter showing no ill effects, however, finishing the contest with 177 all-purpose yards. - Ball State/AP College Football

  09/13/22 - Drew PynerJr/2026, Missouri + More +

With Tyler Buchner out with an injury, Drew Pyne steps in at quarterback. Pyne, the redshirt sophomore who finished out Saturday's 26-21 loss to Marshall, was the obvious choice to replace Buchner in the starting role after Monday's news made it official. Pyne completed 3 of 6 passes for 20 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Michael Mayer with 14 seconds left. Buchner, whose left shoulder was trapped beneath the weight of 228-pound linebacker Eli Neal, was injured on a 4-yard run with 3:30 remaining. Pyne also threw an interception and took a sack on a two-point try. Head coach Marcus Freeman said Monday that as a result of the a Grade 5 (out of 6) acromioclavicular sprain in his left, non-throwing shoulder, Buchner is done for at least the next four months of recovery time. He confirmed that Pyne would be the starter moving forward. - South Bend Tribune

Heralded recruit Luther Burden III reached the end zone twice in his debut, Missouri's new-look defense showed progress against Louisiana Tech, and the Tigers rolled to a 52-24 victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday night at Faurot Field. Joseph Charleston returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown, and Brady Cook, who won the starting job early in fall camp for Missouri, threw for 196 yards with an interception and a touchdown run. Cody Schrader, Nathaniel Peat and BJ Harris also had touchdown runs for the Tigers.

Yet it was Burden, the five-star prospect from St. Louis, who delivered on the hype. He caught a swing pass from Cook before making one defender miss and splitting two more for his first score, then he took a direct snap and ran for another. Burden's only real gaffe came on a sharp throw that bounced off his hands for an interception. Louisiana Tech's Matthew Downing threw for 184 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions in new coach Sonny Cumbie's version of the Air Raid offense. Downing didn't get much help from the Bulldogs' ground game, though, which ran 22 times for 11 yards against what was one of the worst rush defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision last season. - Missouri/AP College Football
