Mississippi State added some much needed experience to its 2021 quarterback room Friday night when former Southern Mississippi signal caller Jack Abraham announced his commitment to MSU via a graphic on Twitter. Abraham, who previously played at Oxford High School, Northwest Community College and Louisiana Tech, appeared in 27 games during parts of three seasons in Hattiesburg. Over that span, the former Golden Eagle completed 595 of 859 passes for 7,067 yards and 41 touchdowns to 29 interceptions.

Abraham's best statistical season at Southern Miss came as a junior when he appeared in all 13 games and threw for a shade under 3,500 yards, while completing 67.9 percent of his throws. The former Oxford quarterback also led the nation in completion percentage during the 2018 season at 73.1 percent - nearly three percent better than second place and former Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew. - The Dispatch

  12/11/20 - Kobie WhitesiderSr/2022, Missouri, 6-1, 317 (DS#53 DT) + More +

Missouri starting cornerback Jarvis Ware is out this week after suffering what Drinkwitz called "a significant injury" in the Arkansas game. Ware has started five of MU's eight games and intercepted one pass. MU nose tackle Kobie Whiteside and receiver Tauskie Dove are both considered questionable. Whiteside returned two weeks ago from a knee injury but went down in the Arkansas game with what appeared to be a leg injury. Dove hurt his shoulder against the Razorbacks. Also, defensive end/outside linebacker Tre Williams is "exploring opportunities outside of Mizzou football," Drinkwitz said. The part-time starter has 21 tackles and two sacks this year. - Post-Dispatch

  12/10/20 - *Nick BoltonJr/2021, Missouri, 5-11, 237 (DS#2 ILB) + More +

With 1:34 left in the second quarter Saturday, Missouri lost its leader, its biggest star player and its most important defensive force in a game with miniscule room for error against a potent Arkansas offense. Nick Bolton, the rare junior celebrated on senior day because his NFL draft stock is so high, watched the rest of the game from the sideline after the Southeastern Conference's latest game-changing targeting penalty. Long before the Tigers finally outlasted Arkansas 50-48, Bolton was flagged for a hit on Arkansas receiver John David White in the open field. Bolton appeared to strike White in the chest and shoulder. The collision knocked the ball loose, but the play was ruled an incomplete pass. Minutes later, the penalty was confirmed by the replay review, meaning Mizzou's leading tackler was done for the day.

The Southeastern Conference video center later confirmed to the Post-Dispatch that officials ruled that Bolton's hit was in violation of NCAA Rule 9-1-4, which is the clause of the targeting rule that states "no player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder." Fans booed the officiating crew as it jogged off the field for halftime, but Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz did not dispute the penalty. "I think it's the right call based on what the definition of targeting is, upward motion to the head and neck area," he said. "There was no intent to harm by Nick. He just got caught in that scenario. So you take the penalty, they reviewed it, they upheld it so that means that's what it was." - Post-Dispatch

  12/05/20 - Larry Rountree IIISr/2021, Missouri, 5-11, 211 (DS#13 RB) + More +

After surrendering the lead in the most excruciating way possible, Missouri drove the field in the final 43 seconds and beat Arkansas 50-48 on Saturday when Harrison Mevis made a 32-yard field goal as time expired. The Tigers (5-3) erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to take the lead, only to give it up in the final minute. Arkansas quarterback K.J. Jefferson threw a touchdown pass to Mike Woods to cut Missouri's lead to 48-47, and coach Sam Pittman elected to go for a 2-point conversion. Jefferson's pass bounced off the chest of linebacker Jamal Brooks and landed in Woods' arms. But Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak had plenty of time to dissect Arkansas' reeling defense and set up Mevis for his fifth field goal of the day. Larry Rountree rushed 27 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers, and Tyler Badie added six carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns - both in the fourth quarter. Bazelak completed 32 of 49 passes for 380 yards. Keke Chism caught six passes for 113 yards. Jefferson started in place of the injured Feleipe Franks for Arkansas (3-6). He completed 18 of 33 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown. Treylon Burks caught 10 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown. Trelon Smith carried 26 times for 172 yards and three touchdowns. - Missouri/AP College Football

  12/02/20 - Tyler BadieSr/2022, Missouri, 5-08, 197 (DS#16 RB) + More +

Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz has said for weeks that he needs to get Tyler Badie more involved in the offense. Throughout the season, it had been more of a to-do list item than an immediate, substantial plan. Mizzou finally made it happen Saturday against Vanderbilt. Badie caught seven passes for 102 yards and ran for 18 yards in Missouri's 41-0 rout. The junior running back usually is an aerial threat out of the backfield once or twice a game, complementing Larry Rountree's ground attack. But Saturday there was more balance for the Rountree-Badie tandem.

"We thought we were gonna be able to get (Badie) in some good matchups, and we were able to do so," Drinkwitz said. "I just think he does a really good job of creating matchup issues." Badie is the first Mizzou running back with 100 receiving yards in a game since Michael Jones tallied 118 in 1990. The last Mizzou receiver to reach triple digits in a game was Johnathon Johnson, last year against Mississippi. That was 12 games ago. - Post-Dispatch
